i can remember hearing them at my grand dads house , he played them on his heathkit high powered tube amplifier that he built. they were fantastic then and they are fantastic now.
Watched an episode of The Bob Newhart show and he mentions to his wife Emily about this band… and being a fan of the harmonica I just had to look it up ! Wow 🤩 amazing !!!!!
Had their album as a kid and wore that thing out it was SO amazing to listen to. Such great talent, hope those harmonicas are in a museum, they should be. Never knew they made harmonicas like that super long one before seeing these guys. As an old flutist I understand how much they had to control breathing and condition themselves to do this thing, so RESPECT!
To all you wrote, I reply 'Indeed!' Jerry played chromatic, Don played bass, and Al played the 24" long chord harmonica. Plus, you are right. Those 'harps' belong in a museum. As Dick Gardner "the Last Hamonicat" would say, "Happiness is warm harmonica." Great posting. Thank you.
I remember my dad (the Lead) telling me that my uncle the cord player in the Golden Harps (1970+), (a Harmonicats type group), could do the cords just as well another way in the song Peg O' My Heart, but they did it they way he did in the beginning of the song because it look good. :) Thanks for the upload. 2018-11
VerifyVeracity It’s very cool that your family had their own group! Yep, there’s another way to play the solo in this key that would have the long jumps only be about 1 foot long. Definitely effects some of the wow factor. Haha!
The first famous harmonica group was Borrah Minevitch and The Harmonica Rascals. In that group was Jerry Murad, who went on to form his own group the Harmonicats. Also in that first group was there was Johnny Puleo, a midget involved in a lot of comedy bits. After Minevitch he also formed his own group, The Harmonica Gang, which kept the comedy angle along with fine musicianship. That's Patti Page who introduces the group as host of her own show.
Sí señor, a Los Harmonicats los he admirado como los mejores . Siempre recuerdo un corto metraje de ellos, que lo daban en los cines de Lima hace mucho tiempo.
+BrianNJenny Brackett Certainly your father's rendering is really amazing. Please send me something about his musical career. I'm planning a radio program on famous harmonicists. harmcordscore@yahoo.com
wrigleyville2016 Al Fiore was the original chord player for the Jerry Murad’s Harmonicats. Maybe he was sick which is why Bob filled in for him. Don Les was the first of the original line up to leave the trio.
Thank-you for posting this wonderful video of Jerry Murad and the Harmonicats Please noted Jerry Murad on lead, Don Less on Bass And Bob Herndon on the Chord
Absolutely remarkable. Impressive then, impressive now. I had a chromatic Hohner when I was a kid, but I was marginal on it at best. I always wanted to play one of those chord monsters.... *By the way, Patti Page, in addition to being beautiful, was also a technology pioneer, being one of the first to overdub her own voice and have amazing hit records. Of course, props go to Les Paul and Mary Ford.)
Don Les was your uncle? How cool! I met Don in Dec 1968. His real last name is (please pardon my spelling) Lescynski. "Boing Boing!" At age 10, he and the other Cats signed my Harmonica Rhapsody LP, each with their full names. In addition to Don was Jerry Muradian and Al Fiorentino. AKA: Jerry Murad, Don Les and Al Fiore. BTW: It was at my house where I met the Cats. My Dad played with them 2-3 times. A joy to read your note. Thank you for posting.
My dad knew Don too. Knew all three from the old neighborhood. Saw them at Pheasant Run twice. When they were selling their album in the lobby (double LP) after the show, my dad asked Al how much they were. Al told my dad $10.00. All my dad had was a $20. Al told my dad, "piss on it, just take it". As classy as they were talented! Never be another trio like them again. NEVER! To all the relatives of these genius musicians, best wishes and many blessings!
Still listening and smiling, December 2021! I learned to play good songs, listening to the Harmonicats! Best of the Best!
A classic of theirs. ❤️

Amazing. My Dad as well. Even the Heathkit!
Glad I picked up 2 of their albums. Outstanding musicians.
Jerry Murand and The Harmonicas 1958 me alegran el corazon .agradezco toda la musica que ellos interpretan.que gran recuerdos.
Loved them when I was little. It is a distinct pleasure, what with the miracle of the Internet, I get to hear them again. Marvelous!
So true, Roger.
Hermoso recuerdo musical. Este lp estaba en casa. Harmonicats favoritos. Mercury de Chile.
Great music ! Grettings

RIP Don Les. Yes, they like bass in Heaven.
All three guys pictured here are now passed on :(
This surely evokes great and sentimental memories! Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this, I'll have to look up The Harmonica Rascals next!
Was wondering who that was. Great info.
@@The_Klystron7 Your welcome.
Como siempre lo he dicho, . Los mejores del mundo.

At the time this aired, had Al not joined yet?

@@wrigleyville Al had his first heart attack in 1958, so Bob had to fill in.
Awesome
Glad you Enjoyed...................Thanks for your Comment.
As Patti said the first song was the group's big hit Peg 'O My Heart. The second song is The Twelfth Street Rag, a number one hit for Pee Wee Hunt.
Thank-you for posting this wonderful video of Jerry Murad and the Harmonicats

Wally P Thanks For Comments And For Info.
Great video! Who's playing chord? Is it Bob Herndon?
Just read the caption. It is Bob. Very cool.
Yeah Chris I thought it was worth to recognize Bob.
Great video! Always fun to watch!
I wish someday a video of Al Fiore and the cats doing Peg will turn up

@CarlDuke the Harmonicat on the right was my uncle, Don Les
YES, DON LESS WAS THE BEST BASSIST IN THE ORIGINAL HARMONICATS

Haven't heard these dues for eons. I got a chromatic har. and it was sooo very hard to pick up (never did, btw). Great stuff - thanks.
Any one know what the 2nd melody they played is?
I remember from the Joe Franklin show his theme song
12th Street Rag
Don't you like the big cat stage decor in the background?? Koo-Well!!
Lord, Almighty!, wasn't Patti Page a stunningly beautiful woman?!
is the bass harmonica really jumping that far across his notes?
The great Don Les hated playing bass harmonica but man was he ever good at it.
What is the second song they play?
+Trey Paterson Maybe Someone Will Know---I Don't
+Trey Paterson That song is the Twelfth Street Rag.
The 12th Street Rag, made famous by Pee Wee Hunt.
The second number for you bozo's that don't know or remember is: "The 12th Street Rag", not a Kotex found on 12th Street.
Al Hirt has a version of 12th Street Rag that features the Anita Kerr Singers singing lyrics.
Funny thing...I am not much of a fan of the harmonica...unless.. the Harmonicats play.
hey where is the little guy?
in another group....johnny puleo and his harmonica gang.
