  • Welcome to the video about The 10 Worst Muscle Cars Ever Made In The 1960s
    89. In the golden age of American automotive performance, the 1960s witnessed the birth of the muscle car phenomenon. These powerful, high-displacement machines were designed to rule the streets, combining raw power with aggressive styling. However, not all muscle cars from that era were created equal. This video takes a closer look at the 10 worst muscle cars ever produced in the 1960s.
Despite the allure of big engines and bold looks, some muscle cars fell short of expectations, plagued by poor design choices, quality issues, or underwhelming performance. From ill-conceived concepts to rushed production models, these muscle cars failed to capture the essence of what made their counterparts so iconic.
The video delves into the flaws and shortcomings of each entry, dissecting the reasons why they have earned a place on this infamous list. Whether it's lackluster handling, subpar build quality, or simply a missed opportunity, these muscle cars serve as cautionary tales in the annals of automotive history.
Prepare to witness the muscle cars that should have remained on the drawing board, the ones that tarnished the reputation of their respective brands, and the failed attempts at capturing the magic of the era's most revered muscle cars.
While the 1960s produced some of the most legendary muscle cars ever built, this video shines a light on the ones that fell short, reminding us that even in the heyday of American performance, not all muscle cars were created equal.

The Skylark wasn’t really a muscle car. It was basically a top of the line halo car for Buick in 53 and 54. Then it became a trim line for the Buick Special. The Gran Sport (later GS) was the performance option which eventually became its own model based on the Special/Skylark platform. By 1974 it was based on the Nova platform and the GS option had moved to the Century. There was no longer a real performance option for the Skylark by then, it was just another Nova clone. Fun fact, each divisions NOVA based car started with a letter from the Nova name. Chevy - Nova, Oldsmobile - Omega, Pontiac - Ventura, Buick - Apollo (which later was abandoned and Skylark took its place.

Changes in horsepower resulted from the change from gross to net in 1972. Also, the reduction in compression, which also started in 1972. Many of these engines were quite underrated, in some part to placate insurance companies.

Dodge missed such an amazing opportunity by not making a 2 door version of the modern charger re-release.

In a way, the Mustang II was an attempt to go back to the Mustang's roots. The original Mustang was a sexy rebodying of the Falcon economy car. The base 200 cubic inch inline six was nobody's idea of a performance motor, but was satisfactory for drivers seeking a cute cruiser. The Pinto based Mustang II was very popular with buyers because it offered them something similar. In that way the Pinto 2.3 L four made as much sense as the original Mustang's 200 cubic inch six. Where Ford REALLY lost the plot with this car was the optional 302 V8. It was weak even by 70s standards, a V8 Mustang could be outdragged by a stock VW Rabbit. One last thing to note is that the Mustang II's reinforced Pinto front suspension gained a great following in the specialty car industry. It is still possible to buy aftermarket front suspension kits that were inspired by the lowly Mustang II.

The last Barracudas and Challengers may have been shadows of their earlier selves, but they were still pretty good for the time and would make excellent cars to restomod. Ditto for the 70s Camaros. The 75's LM1 was not a powerhouse from the factory, but it had a lot of potential. The 350 was Cheverolet's most versatile small block and there is still a lot of aftermarket parts available to turn your 75 Camaro into anything you want.

The Z28 package wasn't eliminated in the 70s. In fact the Camaro Z28 package was eliminated when it returned in 2010 with the 5th generation, but in the last two years of the 5th generation (2014-2015) the Z28 returned briefly for two years. One of the characteristics of the 2014 to 2015 Camaro Z28 was that it had the 427 V8 of the recently discontinued Corvette C6 ZR1. Another characteristic of this was that this Camaro made 505 horsepower and 485 pound feet of torque. In 2023 Car and Driver wrote and article that said that GM was planning to made the Z28 for one last time as a final edition car for the year 2025. Sadly we know that the Camaro was discontinued in this year 2024.

I wouldn't call either the Mustang II or the '75 Nova ugly or "disfugured" as the narrator put it; if they had been available with powerful engines, both would be remembered fondly, though the Mustang II would still look awkward from some angles because of the Pinto-esque short wheelbase. As for the Mustang, the saddest example was the '75 with the 302. Because Ford still sold some of them without catalytic converters, they were both slow and incredibly thirsty, as in 13.5 seconds 0-60 and 8 MPG. The short wheelbase also made the Mustang II nose heavy with the V8, so it didn't even handle well. The Nova was, for better or worse, more forgettable; I don't think any of the versions after 1974 could be called muscle cars, since GM could no longer offer the power. Of course, many Novas of that era are now muscle cars, with owners giving them the big V8s GM couldn't sell. I doubt the owners of those Novas have any problem with their post-1975 styling. As for the '72 Cougar, I suppose that the only reason people pick on it is because its successors couldn't even be called muscle cars; a decent '72 could run rings around any of the much heavier '74-79 versions.

The top performance engine in the '72 Ford Gran Torino and Mercury Montego was the 351 Cleveland with the 4 barrell; 248 hp (this was the first year that automakers listed their horsepower in net hp). Same engine as in the top Mustang of '72. It was good for mid/high 15 second quarter mile times in the Gran Torino/Montego. Respectible-ish times for the day for the large cars.

The Skylark was at its peak in 1967 through 1972, and even in 1973 they offered the Stage 1 though it was cut in power it was still respectable power when driven, and in it's peak in 1970.
Now I drove a classic that I could kill my brother for selling his 1972 solid white Skylark, Stage 1 Gran Sport that turned in the lower twelves on it's stock engine which I had simply freshened up and I noticed no difference in power in it verses my dad's 1970 Stage 1 that I used in it while I rebuilt his original engine.
It was called the hemi killer in 1970 motor trend magazine in 1970, because it was the quickest production car in 1970.

I don't see anything wrong with any of these cars. They looked awesome to me and I would absolutely love to drive and own them. The AMC Javelin with that 401 is still a beast because it's so small and lightweight. Same with the Plymouth Cuda 360. The most important thing is the aftermarket parts will make these cars crazy fast and it doesn't take much. The only car on this list I would keep away from is the pinto based Mustang 2. It has the same gas tank explosion issue as the pinto did.

There is not a muscle car after 1970 period. Most that were considered muscle cars were just luxury street cruisers. When it gets down to it Chevrolet and Chrysler were the only true muscle cars. I don't even know if Ford can even qualify they got beat so badly on the street and Chevrolet got out early. Their best foot forward was the Chevelle SS predominately the 1970 being the best year for that model. Plymouth and Dodge was the main dominating force in anything muscle, Road Runner, Super Bee, Charger, Cuda' and Challenger in their basic performance trim packages. Pontiac and Oldsmobile and American Motors made their attempts but like I mentioned, luxury cruisers, all show with a little bit of go.
I don't even know why Ford invested in Mercury doing what they did, they all were just large body land sleds, including the Ford Cyclone and Torino bodies. massive weighty and lengthy vehicles are not Detroit muscle, then Chrysler destroyed itself with things like the post 70s Sebring bodied GTX and the beloved Volare Aspen Road Runner with a 225 Slant Six and stripe and decal package in order to keep the namesake alive as well as the Chrysler Cordoba luxury Charger. Note: not Dodge Charger but Chrysler Charger. I think this brought about Chrysler's downfall, re-badging non-representative later model vehicles from a by-gone passing era until the big government bail-out when they gave up Plymouth and their Chrysler Marine Division of sport boats and outboard motors; In the early 1980s, the Dodge Aries-K inspired Chrysler's resurgence. In 1979, Chrysler was at death's door and petitioned the U.S. government for $1.5 billion in loan guarantees to avoid bankruptcy.
Lee Iacocca and Jimmy Carter saving Chrysler Motors with the effervescent Chrysler K platform line-up. Man were those big daddy models ever ripping up asphalt from Detroit to east and west shining seas. Chrysler was ripping the guts out of Freedom by this time and letting it ring on home.
Gas quality and pricing did not kill it, it was the cruising laws and and the nasty looking heaps that were being forced out of Detroit. Obviously all big three hired in air conditioning engineers to design their car bodies, Ford had started this fad but ten years earlier. The other was the novelty of cruising was fading out, being hassled by the police and it was also the experimental 70s where things lasted a short season and it's time to move on to the 80s, Mall shopping, all things Pac-Man and being a Mall Rat for fun. Starsky and Hutch would be a living testament to all things being non-muscle. Japan started ruling the American Automotive Industry with 4 cylinder madness on American streets.
The only thing muscle then was a 70s show called....."And Then Came Bronson" with his all seeing eye on his long-lonesome highway road trips.

@@qmusclecars they video quality was pretty decent, but you have to be careful to make sure the video aligns with the narration, and the number one thing is to ensure your title matches the content. Your title indicates the worst musclecars from the 60s, but your content was full of cars from the 70s. Viewers will feel that either you didn't do your homework or you just don't know what you are talking about, so it is imperative to ensure the title always matches the content as to not make the viewer feel confused.
