The transition from baggy pants to colorful skinny jeans cannot be understated
One word: Jerkin'
Homosexuals actually design most men’s clothes , something to think about when shopping lol
Well if you go back to the beginning of modern day hip hop mid to late 70s, the clothing was tight then. Furious 5 Melly Mel etc. Even early run dmc with the tight Lee jeans. This is nothing new
@@Roc696 I wouldn't say Run DMC's Lee Jean's were tight. Straight leg, yes, but far from the nut squeezing, seam ripping skinnies of today.
@@hakeemsd70m hey, some of us actually look better in skinny jeans, personally, I am only 5'7'' and skinny jeans make me look taller than some baggy cargo pants, which I wear too, but only when I feel like it!
This was very well written. The delivery and vernacular used truly captured the presence of HIP HOP in the fashion industry. Also side note, you are a very good storyteller and I appreciate your channel a lot. Thank you so much man.
Have you ever done a video in depth on remake styles that got pretty popular in Japan? Also, thank you so much for that little accurate mention of bboying and street dancing. old school cats esp puerto ricans had god damn good attire. Same thing with locking or popping
There's A WHOLE story to be told about how NYC Puerto Ricans changed the game in Hip Hop. Not talked about enough for sure.
@@THECASUALco make it, drop it!
I think allen iverson also was a 2000s hiphop icon since he pushed it onto tv screens through his street style of play
Word especially with the braids, tattoos, and baggy fits
Yeah that what make AI so iconic
He his also Bring the New vibe.
Love how yous broke the history and evolution down in just 10 minutes. That's amazingly well done! Also enjoyed the Vitas inspired background sample about midway. ^_^
ua-cam.com/video/e8yQcs7HXr8/v-deo.html
Damn, I needed to see this video. Lots of the time, mainstream rap pisses me off because I hate the recycled topics and uncreative beats, but that mindset makes me forget about all the great things hip hop has brought to culture for decades now. I love old school hip hop & its style (some new too) and I am a proud representer of that fashion and music. You’re right when you say hip hop is about being who you are, and being different is celebrated in that community.
You're a great storyteller.
ua-cam.com/video/e8yQcs7HXr8/v-deo.html
Can't deny the West Coast had the hardest looking attire, straight Swapmeet gang attire clothing. Ben Davis, Dickies, Peneltons, Flannels, house slippers, Cortez's, Chuck Taylors. That was the dopest apparel. In West Coast cities like LA many folks still dress like the early 90s.
Much respect to the information in this video, but you did miss 1 major transitional era. And that was between 94-2000. Which is significant bcuz that was when high fashion was introduced to the HH community by the likes of Puffy, BIG, lil Kim, Jay z, The Firm etc. Including brands like Versace Moschino DKNY Chanel etc. This is important bcuz that era was the sole springboard to the high fashion influence in HH today. The expensive price points, and the couture approach to street wear. Not to mention the influence that era had on today's influencers, Pharrell and Kanye specifically.
Kanye changed the fashion game up in hip hop
ua-cam.com/video/e8yQcs7HXr8/v-deo.html
How could he miss 1906 years of history
@@hotkfclover6169 did you read the post???
This reminds me so much of a graduation work I did "The Evolution of Hip Hop and it's influence on our modern society". Culture, politics, fashion - especially Dapper Dan who started the whole Luxury Bootleg scene and custom pieces during mid to late 90s hip hip culture and Nigo who influenced so many people in the hip hop fashion industry, marketing, branding, different sub cultures around the globe and it's musical backgrounds, events etc.).. my other one was about "Graffiti and it's impact on Art & Fashion" .. though when I think back now I would have rather done it about Anime as an artform and it's impact on western culture and fashion (couldn't do that because I already did a presentation on that topic).
I also want to recommend you this Anime called "Smile Down The Runway" - It's about a short model and a fashion designer (specialicing in women's clothes) on their way of come up in the industry.. I really like the show because the clothes designs remind me a lot of Rei Kawakubo's and Yohji Yomamoto's, Issey Miyaki's and Margiela's works of Haute Couture with an own unique touch but you should decide that for your self =)
Hahaha “blAcK fashion” is the silliest most absurd thing I’ve ever heard. You people never invented fashion. Fashion, class and elegance was the product of white folk/Europeans.
@@freckleheckler6311 So I'm lucky to be an ASIAN from an european/austrian white family then.. 😅😂
"Black Fashion" in terms of the fashion world is a whole different subsector of designers that only make clothes in the color black. This is about a music genre's / culture's (Hip Hop's - and yes this music genre just stems from african american black culture) influence on the fashion industry as a whole and you can't tell me there aren't also a lot of white/caucasian rappers today.
Class and elegance in Europe heavily depended on wether if you we're born/taken/married into a social hierarchical higher standing or working class/peasant family. Do you think farmer's could afford expensive well tailored fabrics/materials for clothes? This social structure was built upon keeping information and knowledge from the public in which eductation was key to rising your social standing because only the rich or noble could afford teachers, tutors and mentors until Maria Theresia when school was made accessible for all. Also teachings about social etiquette and how to respect different countries' cultures because they could become potential business partners usually were part of the learning plan.
I can see the point where you're coming from if you are talking about the classic men's-/women's wear sector which was mainly developed in Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Hungary. But how many people around 30/40 today do you still see dressed in a whole suit with vest and pocketsquare unless it's a character in a movie?
If you are talking about modern designer, luxury and streetwear fashion sector you just got to take a look at the designs and can tell that they are hip hop, skate and street art inspired since Hip Hop (incl all subgenres here) is now one of the biggest genres within today's Music Industry besides Pop all around the world.
Another thing is that Asian and American Black Culture since the 80s/90s kept influencing each other more because of Kung-Fu films, Anime and Video Games. Although through music in the form of hip hop it all connected together culturally. Within the last few years there is also trend rising to popularise Asian Hip Hop within the west aswell as Asian Pop Music through youtube, movies and Anime exported into western countries and black aswell as white and latino people also seem to enjoy it (which is now not exclusively only made in Japan but also a big portion of newer releases in China and Korea aswell as it's comic books or webtoons).
Anime / Video Games / Asian Movies and Hip Hop always have been tied closely together since they are both part of pop culture aswell as fashion which is also related to it. I mean there are a ton of asian movie / anime / asian video game references within hip hop and references of hip hop's style which is now labled as streetwear within today's fashion world.
Get educated about the topic first before you start saying things that in the end will make you look stupid and uneducated. Also don't assume peoples origins just based on their their skin tones; we asians come in a lot of different colors, shapes and sizes. I mean the tallest Basketball player ever was chinese.

Please do a tutorial on using military mix! Specifically mixing it with the more hip-hop/skate/grunge aesthetic. Love your videos, they're INCREDIBLY educational
sure thing
@@THECASUALco YESSS. I recently figured out that often times, I could switch between high top converse allstars, and classic Doc Marten boots in the same outfit. Mostly because they have such a similar silhouette, and that got me thinking more deeply about the potential use of military mix.
if you're just starting out, try going out to thrift stores. the authenticity of the piece really matters because part of military style is the rugged look, similar to workwear. so the easiest way to achieve that look is to get second hand pieces which are often sold VERY cheaply. I bought an combat tunic (the jacket) for $15CAD and the coat was only $30CAD. Also focus earth tones (olive green, brown, beige, teal blue) and greys because military pieces are a little big faded in colour so you don't want to overwhelm it with like a neon yellow t shirt.
btw make sure you thoroughly wash each piece because some of that "history" stuck really well with it. Im pretty sure you don't wanna catch surprise disease from the vietnam war (hence why never buy second hand footwear cuz its a trillion times dirtier and hard to wash).
Thanks! I've been shopping around for a typical olive field jacket that jumps out at me (mostly brands like G star raw) Though, I dont mind doing the breaking in myself. I love that kind of durability. Same thing with denim jackets really
Adam Mullis for sureee I got a distressed denim jacket around 4 years ago and got REALLY bored of it. Since I’m an artist tho, I spiced it up with paint splatters and now it’s more of a personal piece than something I just bought
Black American culture is among the richest in human history. Truly has produced almost every great artistic movement of the past 3 centuries.
thats right, the mix of African cultural heritage with America´s consumption behavior has brought together amazing cultural movements

This might be one the best videos on the channel
Honestly, even I enjoyed it. And I hate every video. 😅~Reggie
Ralph Lauren Polo is the most important brand in the evolution of Hip Hop style and Fashion. Polo was embarrassed by Lo Life Crews and the culture played a huge role on the lifestyle and aspirations of young black kids growing up in areas of Brooklyn in the 90’s which has in turn influenced the whole of street fashion today! Horse Power: Hip Hops impact on Ralph Lauren is a must see for anyone interest in the culture! Also there is a great interviews on UA-cam with Complex and Ronnie Fieg of Kith on New York in the 90’s and the influence of the culture on him and his business! ua-cam.com/video/HQYEJGhIWbw/v-deo.html
Can't deny that Hiphop is one of the most impactful and influential culture of all. Started from attitude and behavior then to fashion. Even luxury brand is adapting Hiphop to their products. Anyway like how you connect Michael Jordan with Hiphop..haha...
Actually they stole from white culture and most rappers are fake , basically actors. Watch the entire documentary

Actually they stole from white culture , rich people’s clothes .

This was absolutely awesome!!!
Great video man! This is awesome!
Literally every single one of my favorite outfits is comprised of stuff I found for $10 or less at a thrift store, stuff that retails for like $400 sometimes. Go searching yall. You can strike gold. I find Gucci sunglasses, wallets , Tommy, LV, even real gold and diamonds sometimes at garage sales. people dont even know wtf they have.

Wished you told the story of Kanye's Crew attending the Paris Fashion Week 2008 onwards. I mean those guys probably paved to almost anything streetwear luxury now. Bentley, Taz, Virgil, Don C then with Donda, the connections to Joe Perez, Jerry Lorenzo(FOG), Matthew Williams (Alyx), Justin Saunders (JJJJound) and Heron Preston. Probably missed some players but that lineup is influential as hell.
No shout out for Flavor Flav and his clock? Style. Icon.
Informative and precise! I learned a lot.
Dope Segment Piece on Hip-Hop. Good Points, Nice Transition. AJ reference, Solid.
Love how your vids aren’t like other who only show their own success without explaining how and always repeating the same concepts. Would love to see a vid on how collabs work, especially brands who collab with popular anime’s, what things you need for that ? A contract, a permission, or what ? Please help out .
Wow I am actually early this time. Love this channel though!

I only have 1 pair of shoes, I'm an embarrassment to hip hop.
@@vdondada Classic!
A good reason to stay behind the scenes for me, definitely can't afford a fresh look.
Bro, you forgot to mention KARL KANI!!!
Great video!
Looking at what's popular today, I think the importance of the afrocentric movement in hip hop cannot be understated. You briefly mentioned ethnic traditions influencing hip hop in the 80s, but that influence continued well into the 90s, and even the 00s, through neo soul more than hip hop proper. I feel like that movement stayed true to the essence of hip hop way better than the baggy street style we often associate with that era. The whole "street" aesthetic soon became pretty corporate and uniform compared to its afrocentric counterpart. Acts like Tribe, Dela Soul, post-Erykah Andre, Ms Badu herself, Lauryn Hill, etc. helped preserve hip hop's quirkiness and originality when it was starting to lean towards conformity.
Absolutely. That why I need you all to fill in the gaps! 😅
Hip Hop Rules! Appreciate this episode Reggie just was tweeting some random thoughts o. This topic yesterday and today! @BUCCREWCANVAS
You missed the birth of polo and how that became the style that influence Ye
But can't take no credit from you... you did great summarizing it within 10 minutes!!
Kind of off information, but generally true. Forgot to mention Dapper Dan. He and the Shirtkings were the most influential icons in HipHop History. But good information though !!
Man I learn so from you 😁
The music in this video was good but a bit overpowering so I couldn't you as well sometimes. Still a 🔥 episode though
ua-cam.com/video/e8yQcs7HXr8/v-deo.html
90s & 2000s Hip Hop did influenced a lot on how the skateboarders (& any other action sports) dresses & even nu metal scene
Look at any old skate footage from the 90s - mid 2000s, there’s plenty of skater in their baggy pants skating on the streets. I slide my first baggy jeans back when I first started skating. That time, I was (still today) into Hip Hop, Emo, Punk rock & Nu Metal musics.

there was no coverage on the velvet jumpsuits of the early 2000's.
what would you call that De La Soul, Salt'N'Peppa psychedelic hippie fashion? You know, the looks with big plastic earrings and bracelets in 25 different colours put together?

one question i have with rap fashion is the proto-rap fashion, from before brands. you showed a picture of Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, and I'm so curious as to what led a man to wear leather pants, a denim jacket and a pill bottle hat. I know this video is old, but could anyone shine some light on the fashion sense, cause I want to know what drives a man to look like a jojo's character
