    I've been picking locks since 2016,needless to say I've watched alot of videos related to picking. I recently came across your videos and I must say, at least for me your videos and the way you explain things is on par if not better then most. Please continue with these quality videos. I believe they will really guide new pickers down the road to success. Thank you.....James

    Hi Fish here - just wanted to apologise for any confusion caused when I talk about springs and the Masterlock 570 - I said that, as a dead lock body, it has no springs - I should have clarified that there ARE pins in the bible, pressing onto the driver/key pins - only the hasp release spring is absent! As a newcomer to locksport and you-tubing, I am sure this isn’t going to be the last howler like this I make, but please be kind and patient!

      @@fishpicks4531 yeah, It’s typical of master lock because of the sloppy cores it makes it hard to detect. Plus the spools are shallow. I had to pick three of them before I noticed they had spools. I then cut one open and found that it had two spools and the rest of the drivers were standard.

    • @Jimijaz
      @Jimijaz 4 роки тому

      Yeah, I had read that there were spools in 140’s but just did a search on YT and someone actually cut one open and there were, in fact, three spools AND a serrated pin! It’s far harder to pick than to simply just comb due to the crap keyway.

      My Master 140 feels serated on pins 2 and 3. Tiny little clicks as your raising them, fairly good snaps when they set. I'm really new to lock picking but good basic knowledge

    Just a quick mention on your explanation of tolerances. The slots being misaligned/offset from the "center line" isn't what creates the binding order, but rather the circumference of each pin, and the slot they fit into that determines this.
    There are many locks that have pins that protrude from the plug, into the key way from all different angles or orientations such as cross locks, or even just a basic tubular lock. If your explanation of tolerances was correct, then the pins in those locks should bind in order, one after the next, but that isn't what happens when picking. Instead, the binding order is different for each one, just like with all locks.
    A pin with a "tighter" fit (the circumference of the pin itself is as close as possible to the circumference of the slot without being too big too actually fit) will always bind before a pin with a "looser" fit. Often, and especially in the case of some higher quality locks, the difference between each pin is so small that we can't physically see it, but this actually hurts the locks functionality if the tolerances are too good. The key will stop working sooner as the pins get worn down from use, and the lock has no forgiveness if anything isn't perfectly aligned.
    Anyways, sorry to nit pick (no pun intended 😋).
    Great content, keep it up :)

    • @fishpicks4531
      @fishpicks4531  4 роки тому

      Isaac this is great information and exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for - I had no idea about the circumference of the pins being the factor in binding order and that has fundamentally improved my understanding. Thanks so much and I’ll be sure to address that misunderstanding in a future video 🙏

      Thanks - yeah, I find the bend in the TOK wrench means it slips out of the keyway less often and allows me a little more control of the degree of pressure I’m using. Love the tips like this that I’m picking up from experienced members of the community.

  • @kevenquinlan
    @kevenquinlan Рік тому

    Commenting before even watching. I know the first 2/ the 140 is only hard to pick because the keyway= TINY. I usually just use a rake and they rake easy but I turn WITH the rake also, as I don't have a turner that fits and allows a pick to go in too. The 5= the hardest out of the 1-5 types, with 3 probably being the easiest and most ubiquitous. Say what you will (I would never buy one or use one) but Master is exceptional for beginning pickers- they are cheap and everywhere. Don't know the 3rd and will see what you do.

    What's your recommendation on very springy locks that have security pins in it. The lock I'm referring to that I encountered this is the Guard No. 836 50 mm. The lock doesn't have a very straight forward binding order because of the springyness of the pins even at high tension. Bosnian Bill resorted to bitch picking it to open the 40 mm version quickly. I'm wondering if I have to do the same.

    I think people must have much different picking styles. I find 140's a tad difficult and 570's fairly easy. I know plenty of people who say the opposite. And M1 with gold outside cover... I have never gotten one of these, or M15. But I can get "harder" BEST locks, etc. Odd .
