I've been doing this for a few months now, have a 2018 Promaster and have been averaging 2-3 weeks out and a week home. Im also an O/O making plenty and it's nice to travel as well as be my own boss etc. Have a folding cot with a nice comfortable mattress that rolls up, have usually canned foods, bread and pb/ jelly and lunch meat etc.. saves on costs as well as no need for hotels.
If you need a weekly paycheck this isn't the job for you. You have good weeks where you may gross (that's before expenses) $5k+ and there's other weeks you may not even get a load (but you still have your fixed expenses to pay). You can average gross $80k+ depending on you, the company, the area, the loads, the price, etc. Grossing $100k is not out of the question if you are a decent runner.

My Promaster 1500 136" wb (two sliding side doors) has 2 E Tracks on the floor and one on each rear wall, as well as an AC/Heat unit hanging from the ceiling near the rear doors. I think it may have been used for catering! There is enough room to slide the food carriers, strap them in and have your living space behind the front seats. The foldup divider and foldup bed are genius solutions as well!
If you're going to drive for owner you better take 60/ 40 and you better get your fuel service charges 100% or it's not worth it... Any owner that decides he's going to keep the fuel service charges is a crook... And make sure you can get your 60% loaded on your Comdata card right away, that way you have your fuel money and your living money and also that way your fuel service Chargers end up becoming your payroll and guaranteed that coming in every week... I expedited for over 10 years.. I worked for two absolutely outstanding owners when my first owner passed away I went with somebody for 4 months from November to February... And when Freight wasn't running and I was sitting for 10 days in North Dakota in the cold he decided he was going to stop paying me... it took me almost a month to find a new owner and I wouldn't have been able to survive if the few loads that I did take I wouldn't have had my 60% loaded he kept all my fuel service charges for 4 months he owes me a little over $4,000 and I'll never see it... So you make sure you sign a contract that is binding... And always make sure that any equipment AKA your van you treat like it was yours... Keep it clean you take care of your equipment and your equipment will take care of you

Thanks. If your going to be a owner operator you will need at least $10k (up to 3 weeks fuel, Bills, and maintenance. You need to keep at least a $5k maintenance fund). And if you're looking for more information and owners to drive for (I highly recommend you to do that for 6 months before buying a van) or companies to lease to. Look up Transportation life wheels wings and rudders on Facebook and zello.
Its not a fit for everyone, but I wish you the best of luck. Go to Facebook or download a app called zello and lookup Transportation Life wheels wings and rudders. You will be able to talk to people that is in the industry. From people like yourself that's looking to 25 year veterans. From drivers to fleet owners.
If you are a owner operator it's your van so you decide how much you want to work. But whatever company you run for may have "suggested availability" or "on duty time " unless you book your own loads.
@@RedsCustomDesign dad doesn't run north in the winter, had enough winter but maybe southern corridors , l guess if you're an owner operator, you have a little more say . This is interesting
You have to no control over where the loads go. Or when they go. Expedite freight is much go right now, asap. And there is no "Southern corridor" in expedite.
Hello, I have been looking into expediting in a van, but I am not sure which one I should get. Can you tell me if a 6' 3" tall man can sleep in the Promaster? I believe the mercedes is narrowed for me. I like to stretch my legs out.
I'm new to the expediting world. I've done all of driving and similar jobs. But I'm about to start my first job expediting. The deal I have is working for an owner the split is 50/50. They pay for all the fuel, maintenance, etc.. would you say that's a good situation to be in? Really looking for some help and insight. Plus any advice would be awesome!
@@RedsCustomDesign I just got the contract today. It does say that the company covers expenses and fuel and it's a 50% take on the haul. In your experience, would you say this is decent for earning potential?
Depends on if you book your own loads, or are using multiple carriers. Then you have to carry a 1 million dollar cargo/ liability insurance. Or if you are leased to a company you can get it through them. But that depends on the company. Regular auto insurance won't be, it has to be "for hire".
So let me ask you. If I am now an expediter, and get a load at 18:00, after being off the whole day and being able to sleep the night before, am I supposed to get on the road and drive overnight, or am I allowed to wait until 05:00 or 06:00 and take off in this line of shipping? I don't care if I am 3 to 4 weeks or 3 to 4 months on the road, what I do care about is I cannot drive at night or overnight. I may be able to drive until 24:00, but I will stop, sleep, wake in the morning and carry on.
Then you won't be in the expedite business long. Because it doesn't work like that. You don't have a "sleep schedule" . If you don't have a run by noon then you better lay down and take a nap because odds are you will get a night run. That's how this business works, they call, you go. You sleep when you can. 70% of the loads will be at night. And driving for 10, 14, 18, + hours straight is not uncommon. Good luck to you.
Ok, I understand. What would be the max straight out number of miles an expediter is supposed to complete before rest? I read you listed 10, 14, 16 hours straight. 10 and 12 is acceptable, but 14 sounds crazy. Can I take 30 minute brakes? Also. I doubt that your van has a fuel dependency to last 14 and 16 hours on the move without refueling.
You time depends on the load. And how much time they give you. You can always ask for more but most of the time you won't get it. As for "allowed to drive" there is no requirement/ registration on driving in a van. I personally have drove 24 hours straight. Is it for everyone? No. Was it "safe" ? Probable no. Is it being everyday in the industry? Everyday. Most people will stop and fuel every 300-400 miles and fuel.
@@RedsCustomDesign ok, now let me ask you. After you complete a long run, how much time you get to rest or how soon you get a another run? Do they take into account that you need some rest?
I never went out of service (unless I home). And that depends on where you are at, time of day, how many are ahead of you on the board (your same company). You can get back to back runs. Or you could sit for a week.
Is there alot of freight going in and out of Arizona or is it not worth getting into if you live out west? Just wondering cause I'm really interested in this. Thanks for the vid.
I wouldn't say there is a lot but there is a far amount. But expediting is like truck driving, it doesn't matter were you "live" because you'll be all over. And it depends how often you "need" to be home. I know a couple people who live in AZ that Expedite. One goes home every 8 weeks or so, the other goes home when he gets that way.
What would you say the total weight of all the accessories in this would be ? Because that would definitely effect the loads you take because you already have weight . I'm just curious because id like to do thiz
As stated in the video, you want the biggest van you can get. And as stated in the video you need to be able to haul 3 pallets and 2500 - 3000lbs. You can't get a V8 in a promaster V6 only.
Red's Custom Design im coming in alone on this. I want to create a business not for just funds but freedom. As a self owner operator, what do you think, any tips starting off?
@@itsohk9870 before you buy a van you need to have 6 months household expense money, 6 months of business money and $5k+ for repairs. Minimum. If you don't have that (I'm not talking credit cards, or browsing money. I'm talking cash or in savings) then your not ready to buy a van.
Thats because they don't work very well and no one wants them. You want a a/c to cool you off and a separate heater (not electric and NOT a buddy heater) to keep you warm (Webasto, Espar, Chinese diesel heater).
If you had your own attorney, DOT#, your own commercial insurance, and paid to buy in so you can be able bid on the loads along with 5,000+ other people. Then yes you could try and do that. And that $4k is after expenses.
I am considering getting into the sprinter van expediting business. Can anyone tell me what average dollar amount is insurance going to cost me per month? So I see a comment about fuel charges and I want to be sure I understand this. If im an owner/ operator what should the company I work for be paying me for fuel? One company I looked into said I get a .10/.20 sure charge so that would meat that 80/90% of fuel comes out of my pocket ...correct? Any feed back would be appreciated. One more thing , Chris in this video I see works for Barret, there are located in the town I live in Bentonville Ar. Is this a good company to work for?
From what I gathered insurance price depends on your driving history, location (state you live in), your credit score, and insurance company. Some companies that you sign in to do expediting exclusively for them will put you their insurance policy for about $150 a week ($8000 a year). That is considered cheap. In some states the insurance can reach as high as $20,000 a year if you are doing it for yourself. Just check with different companies in your area or internet. This kills the profit.
Red, could you get back with Chris and let us know how the Pro Master (V-6) is holding up? At different mileage along the way. I am interested in getting one and I know he would have the best way of testing. Cajun
There are a lot of people on the Transition Life WWR page who have promaster's with a wide range of miles. For brand new to 350,000. But I will try to do a update in 6-9 mouths .
How do you carry freight with all that stuff in there?????? Understand however that is a lot of stuff in that van. Must be doing a lot of rearranging........
@@RedsCustomDesign That just a lot of stuff to have in there. I understand but still a lot of stuff.......like the video looking to get into the business. Again you know best no doubt.
Chris, very nice build. I have one question to ask you. When you have the time can you let me know how you over road the airbag light when you removed the passenger seat? Stay safe. Tom
Chris is the van owner. I'm (Red) the one that build the van. But to answer your question. I didn't, the light is still on. But if you could find a junk seat that you can cut up to get the sensors out of it you could then plug it into the harness and alls good.
Most companies require you to be able to haul 3 skills (52"w x 48"L) and 3,000 lbs and as tall as possible. This one is a dodge promaster 3500 hightop extended 160" cargo.
Bm i use a ford transit 250 high roof with 10’ length of room in the back and wish i had gone bigger. They do make an extended version or you can go with the freightliner/mercedes sprinter xtra long
I like the false wall and how the bed folds up! That is mighty creative !

Depends on if you book your own loads, or are using multiple carriers. Then you have to carry a 1 million dollar cargo/ liability insurance. Or if you are leased to a company you can get it through them. But that depends on the company. Regular auto insurance won't be, it has to be "for hire".
What would you say would be a good Freight lane area for expediting?
Everywhere there is freight. Depends on the time of year, the company you are with, the size of van, etc. And it's always changing.
Question: does the color of the van matters? What if I am O/O but I work for X company.
It depends on the company. Some require a white van only.
Thanks guys excellent video
That's our company. The best company
Hi friend question how you turn on the a/c. With inverted battery or you used a powerplant??
Generator
@@RedsCustomDesign where you put the generator-?
On a swing arm on the back hitch
What are those gold things he puts a piece of wood in between called? And where can I buy them?

nice very nice how much for the whole set up and the van love it
Eric Aiken around 8k from a empty van to everything in it new.
nice cant wait until its my turn
Damn 30 lbs in 2 months not bad
Very informative!thank you
What the floor made of?
Is there alot of freight going in and out of Arizona or is it not worth getting into if you live out west? Just wondering cause I'm really interested in this. Thanks for the vid.
I wouldn't say there is a lot but there is a far amount. But expediting is like truck driving, it doesn't matter were you "live" because you'll be all over. And it depends how often you "need" to be home. I know a couple people who live in AZ that Expedite. One goes home every 8 weeks or so, the other goes home when he gets that way.
What are those stoppers called that you clicked in and placed the board against or in them? Thanks
Here is a Amazon link to them

How much does a conversion/setup like this cost?
Around 7k
Best video do far
What would you say the total weight of all the accessories in this would be ? Because that would definitely effect the loads you take because you already have weight . I'm just curious because id like to do thiz
Most places will only require you to haul 3,000lbs. But most drivers will set it around 2500lbs .
How can we find a company or someone who customized these Vans and equipments this way??
That's what I do for a living. Www.redscustomdesign.com
what load boards do you recommend?
What kind of truck is it a pro master 3500? And is it better to get a v6 or v8? And lastly, dimensions on truck?? How do we know a pallet will fit
As stated in the video, you want the biggest van you can get. And as stated in the video you need to be able to haul 3 pallets and 2500 - 3000lbs. You can't get a V8 in a promaster V6 only.
Red's Custom Design appreciated thank you
Red's Custom Design im coming in alone on this.
Red's Custom Design so a good 10k or so, plus van money down payment or out right cash deal on van?
I have a roof AC /heater Going on a straight truck with a big sleeper and how much you would charge for installation
Email me.
What brand of AC/heater is it? Hard to find one for your roof with AC/heater combo.
Thats because they don't work very well and no one wants them. You want a a/c to cool you off and a separate heater (not electric and NOT a buddy heater) to keep you warm (Webasto, Espar, Chinese diesel heater).
Instead of waiting around all the time couldn't you grab from the load board, so that maybe you could see that 4k to 6k a month? Just a thought
If you had your own attorney, DOT#, your own commercial insurance, and paid to buy in so you can be able bid on the loads along with 5,000+ other people. Then yes you could try and do that. And that $4k is after expenses.
How do I get started? Can you make a step by step how to get into it
I am considering getting into the sprinter van expediting business. Is this a good company to work for?
ronnie henderson Just saying. If you an owner operator most of the time all gas money is your responsibility.
Is his van gas or diesel? Does he know Tim Paxton Expeditors @ Barretts?
CAJUN Jamis gas, and yes
Red, could you get back with Chris and let us know how the Pro Master (V-6) is holding up? At different mileage along the way. I am interested in getting one and I know he would have the best way of testing. Cajun
There are a lot of people on the Transition Life WWR page who have promaster's with a wide range of miles. For brand new to 350,000. But I will try to do a update in 6-9 mouths .
How do you carry freight with all that stuff in there?????? Understand however that is a lot of stuff in that van. Must be doing a lot of rearranging........
Nope, they can haul 3 pallets+ no problem.
@@RedsCustomDesign That just a lot of stuff to have in there. I understand but still a lot of stuff.......like the video looking to get into the business. Again you know best no doubt.
What kind of van is it? Make, model?
Dodge promaster 3500 hightop extended.
Where does this driver (Chris) sleep when he's hauling 3 skids?
You loose your bed when you have 3 skids. Unless you can sleep on top of the freight.
Hey men what size the van have to be for this business or I can buy size??.. thanks 🙏
Most companies require you to be able to haul 3 skills (52"w x 48"L) and 3,000 lbs and as tall as possible. This one is a dodge promaster 3500 hightop extended 160" cargo.
Red's Custom Design ok 👌 the little Ford Transit is not good for me??
Bm i use a ford transit 250 high roof with 10’ length of room in the back and wish i had gone bigger. They do make an extended version or you can go with the freightliner/mercedes sprinter xtra long
who make it this things and how much coast it
