- In India the Modi government is being accused of waging a war on Bollywood, the country’s most powerful cultural force, effectively turning it into a propaganda tool.
Filmmakers who dare to criticise the government or resist pressure to produce pro-Hindu content face a backlash.
In this episode of Foreign Correspondent, the ABC’s South Asia Correspondent Avani Dias goes behind the scenes in Bollywood to meet industry insiders who’ve risked their careers to speak candidly on camera.
In the words of one well-known actor: “If you want to thrive in Bollywood you have to suck up or shut up”.
Its left some asking whether free speech is at risk in the largest democracy in the world under Modi’s reign.

Vivek's wife herself is saying the prime minister has endorsed the film. How could he deny it?
The prime minster appreciated the sprit of the film and asked people to face up to the truth and not seek the movies BAN as demanded by muslim organizations and communists.

He said Kashmiri pandit genocide but according to Indian Home Ministry 89 Kashmiri pandits were killed by militants over the period of 10 years from 1989 to 1999. That's definitely not the meaning of genocide

The criticism is that it portrays a true incident with the sole intent of communal polarization & inciting violence. After this there were incidents of violence against Ms, gen0_cidal slogans raised in theaters, kashmiris out of hotels or denied service, harassment of even children & students in schools. And more..
If somebody did 0.001% of the inhuman villification of Indians or hindus, the way you do for Ms on a daily basis, you will know what it feels like.

This is a great work and as an India I thank your team for that. There is also a movie called 'The kerala story'. Which became bigger hit than 'kashmir files'.The agenda of that movie is to defame a state called keralam where Hindus, Muslims and christians are living peacefully with a brotherhood spirit. They took some rare incidents which happened years back and projected it like this is what keralam is all about there is nothing good out there and hindus are getting targeted by muslims. They released the movie during the state election of 'Karnataka'which is the neighbouring state of 'Keralam'. One thing that this bjp government keep doing after came in to power is to divide the people and make it as vote for them. In today's india the most hated word is 'Secular'.

Stopped watching Bollywood movies couple of years back.
Other South Indian filims including Telugu which produced Oscar winning RRR, Bahubali. Kannada and Malayalam filims are much better these days.

It is important to note that the success of a film like 'Kashmir Files' does not inherently categorize it as mere "propaganda," solely due to it conflicting with the perspectives of the reporter or the featured professor. Have the producers taken the initiative to consult Kashmiri Pandits, in order to gauge whether they find the film's content to be inaccurately portrayed or sensationalized in relation to their narrative?
Moreover, my interest waned in regard to the professor's standpoint, particularly when she depicted the departure of the Pandits as being a matter of them being "asked" to leave. This statement overlooks the brutal ramifications that transpired for those who resisted this seemingly benign request, consequences that remained largely inconspicuous to the nation until the release of this film shed light on them.
man just know that every person involved in this video is insanely out of touch. The professor starts out as a film studies person but she's got more to say on politics and the "political hindutva project". You can see she's dressed a bit like major Bollywood actress's mother, who also happens to be a professor at the same university as the first one. That's not a bug it's a feature for all these people who will wear sari as a performance. That draping would be a nightmare if they actually wore it out like that for 10 min. Maybe they are corrupt, they are certainly all in a nexus which is fishing for boutique opportunities so a few doors closing doesn't matter and even props up the kind of image

Can you list some Indian movies which justify terrorism? I have watched plenty of Indian movies, none of them justify terrorism. One thing stands out..they are okay trying to look like westerners…that can be seen as following colonialists….my daughter (who is half Sri Lankan) and I used to watch the Bollywood movies SBS used to have on but we gave away watching them because of a visit to India and the way women are treated in India…like honour killings, forced marriages, prostitution and the inadequate housing, food etc where people sleep on the street…in Mumbai they even have train carriages for women only because they run the risk of being sexually assaulted just travelling on them.
