In the early 1970s, we had 1960s Barbies and accessories that my father threw away even though he we played with them. It's a miracle I didn't grow up hating him for doing something so hurtful. The Barbies were given to us by his girlfriend after her daughter went to college. She had also given us beautiful baby dolls with clothes that were of same quality as real baby clothes. The dresses had smocking (older people knew what this is) and mother of pearl buttons. My dad's girlfriend was really sweet so the items meant a lot to us.

In the early '70s, I was a typical kid who was totally into Hot Wheels. I only remember two cars that I had. I had the "beach bomb" surfer van (don't remember the color) and a white Chaparral. My next door neighbor had the metallic brown Chaparral. Those two Chaparrals were by far the fastest cars in our collections back then.

When I was a small child growing up in the 1960's we lived about 2 blocks from the animation studios of Hanna-Barbera. My brothers and I collected a pile of thousands of original animation cels from shows like the Flintstones and the Jetsons among many others. These cels regularly sell for $20-$30, with some gels featuring main characters going for hundred$ or even thousand$. We had a stack that was at least a foot taller than I was at 6 years old, so it was thousands of cels. And you guessed it, when we moved to Malibu in 1970 my Mom threw them all away. sigh......

I was a fortunate kid in that my parents and my grandparents each bought me the initial Hot Wheels series in 1968, and for some reason, one box had a double helping of cars...fortunately few in duplicate colors. I took pretty good care of them, even as an 8 year old, and built up the collection with the subsequent series cars. I can't blame my mom for throwing them away...I did it to myself when I was 16 and gave them away to a cousin, who threw them away himself. And then during my 50's spent $1000's in replacing all those original 1968 US made cars...1st series and then the 2nd series. No pink or red rear load Beach Bombs, tho...

You know I get the last part of what he said, my mom passed away less than two weeks ago and I'm in the process of figuring out what to sell, donate, and to keep. I'm having a hard time entertaining the idea of letting anything go bc my mom was my world and it's all I have left of her but I know my mom would want me to be set as well. So this man did what his father wanted him to do by keeping it bc it would be worth money one day but I can understand the moral dilemma attached to these types of situations. I wish him the best of luck.
