I only recently discovered Jason Isbell and have become absolutely obsessed with his Southeastern album. What a masterpiece. Thanks for doing this one! Morgan did a good job.
It’s magic to hear Jason sing it and an entire audience go silent, and cheer for him when he says he sobered up. It was a deeply personal song for him and I’m not sure Morgan really gets it.
Jason’s the man with his story telling. The songs on Southeastern are soooooo damn good, anyone can sound good if they respect the song structure. I love all of Jasons stuff but for me his latest album Weathervanes is his best since Southeastern for me. Playable front to back.
Michael, among other things, this right here is exactly what makes your channel amazing. Here you are, as a huge Isbell fan, listening to a cover that 99% of Isbell’s fanbase hates. Listening with an open mind and picking out things to help others learn, and even some things Morgan does better in your opinion. Literally every one of your videos are so easily watchable because of how you never bash, and can always find a takeaway from everything. So great. I personally like Morgan’s voice a little more when it comes to this song, but Isbell sure captures more emotion when he sings it, and wrote it. So I agree that Jason’s version is better. But both are awesome. Thank you.
I've watched your reaction to Jason Isbell's version probably 20 times. It's a lot of fun watching you discover the song and Jason Isbell and just fall in love with it, especially given that you since enjoyed a bunch of his other songs. Knowing it was the start of something that grew. I think Morgan is probably a better singer overall, but there's just something missing in this version for me. It felt to me like somebody trying to emulate passion rather than feeling it.
One Chris Stapleton is enough. The oversinging Stapleton wannabes are unlistenable, especially when they also overdo the Nashville-country-bro vocal affectation, as Wallen does here. This guy crescendos to a peak by the third phrase. From there, the performance has nowhere to go except to repeat ad nauseum. Overall, too boring, too phony to finish listening.
I accidentally stumbled onto your channel, and I'm glad I did. You describe the music very well, and you are an amazing guitarist in your own right. I have been playing and writing since I was 14. I even had a publishing deal in Nashville years ago. I appreciate what you do, and I think you give an honest outlook on every song that you react to. Keep up the good work, and greetings from Oklahoma.
Probably because it Wallen's vocals sound robotic. Maybe I've been watching too much Wings or Pegasus videos but I'm 80% confident they've over used pitch correction on Wallen's track.
Have you listened to Zach brown Band version to this song? First of all, the song is one of the best ever written but once hearing ZBB do it, it’ll always be my go to version! Would love your thoughts on that version!
Especially since Michael reviewed Jason’s performance at The Ryman with whole 400 Unit. The duet with Amanda was so emotionally perfect. This is good but feels a little over inflected to my ear - Jason’s lyrics are so good they don’t need excess seasoning. Not to mention Sadler’s incredible slide work made the OG performance peerless.
Mental mistakes are made by all of us at some point in our lives ; the key point of it all , is learn from them. Perfection , nomatter how good we think we are......will never be obtained in the eyes of others.....much less if we're honest , within ourselves. Ever. I personally love both o these guys work , and I probably always will. This particular work surely has room for many......I cant imagine it ever being written without it. Excellent breakdown good brother.....all around. Thanks always , and let him who thinks he was put here as a judge...cast the first stone.......love you man , your still , and probably always will be one of my favorites. ron
Thanks for your take on it brother. I learned a lot and appreciate the song more after watching your video. Keep it up! You have a gift and I appreciate you sharing it with the world.
From the opening lyric you know it isn't as good as the original. Sorry but Jason is the antithesis to corny cowboy country with the forced inflection in their voices. Long life Jason
It depends if you want to hear the song or the singer. If you're looking for something that's polished, this is it. If you want to FEEL the song, only Jason's will do.
I'm totally okay with people changing lyrics on songs they cover. But there is something very profound in Jason singing home was a dream, vs love. Home hits a crap ton harder in my opinion.
It’s on piano so, so you would have to relate piano chords to guitar. But some day you should do Morgan’s “acoustic” version of his song “sand in my boots”
Brother I love your videos. But Morgan Wallen is a straight up POSER. And he changed the words… “home was a dream” not “love was a dream.” Wallens twang and mini runs aren’t impressive. They’re taking someone’s art and making money off of it. The only good silver lining is that Jason also got super paid. The other guitar player was fine.
Jason's version 100%. When Wallen used a racial slur in 2021, this was Isbell's response: "A portion of this money goes to me, since I wrote ‘Cover Me Up,'” Isbell tweeted on Wednesday. “I’ve decided to donate everything I’ve made so far from [Wallen’s] album to the Nashville chapter of the NAACP. Thanks for helping out a good cause, folks.”
There isn’t any autotune. There is a lot of reverb though and he didn’t intentionally change lyrics, he forgot one word. His studio version on his album has correct lyrics. It’s a solid cover and more country tuned. But it isn’t for everyone.
Not trying start anything, but didn't Isbell give away all the money he made for Morgan Wallen's version to the NAACP because of some racist comment Morgan Wallen made? Love your channel. I'm here for all of it.
He's got an (acoustic?) version of sand in my boots (his song) where it's just him and a keyboard. I thought he was just another modern radio country fuck till I saw it, he's better than he ought to be. I'd love to see you take a look❤️
Morgan Wallen's issues aside, I looooove his vocals. His song Sand In My Boots did what Cover Me Up did for you. I could see myself and my crush on a beach in Mexico where I got stranded when the pandemic started. Absolute magic. I think it's his Cover Me Up. I want to write my own Cover Me Up too.
Does anyone else feel like he ruined it by changing the lyric to " love was a dream"? It's written "home was a dream" which is just more powerful to me. I'd say someone in his camp agrees because the actual album version was changed back to the way Jason wrote it. Changing a Jason Isbell lyric is not unlike changing the Mona Lisa's hair style or facial expression. It's just wrong. But I don't hate it, and to be honest, Morgan's version is probably prettier but Jason's version is just better.
I know Jason has a typically recognized better voice, but I think Morgan made this song what it was because of his country accent shines in such a glorious way! For me, Morgan owns this song now (I know plenty will hate that idea)
People arguing over whose version is better. Music is subjective so just stop. Personally I like this version better but obviously I respect the original because Jason lived it and wrote it. But this is more country and I prefer it.
I get so angry every time I hear MW butcher this song. The autotune, the manufactured twang, the lack of any soul or feeling. It's so awful on every level and he should have never been allowed anywhere near this near-perfect melody. He is awarded zero points and we are all dumber for having heard it.
the beginning guitar riff is from the beatles "norwegian wood" i disagree with the best line i think it's "a heart on the run keeps a hand on the gun it can't trust anyone" morgan cannot write. and he sure as HELL didn't write this version of one of the all time classics blasphemy hey morgan.. cover king of oklahoma.. might as well ya bloke.. a completely embarrassment I'm SO close to unsubscribing for giving jason's most personal song ANY credence

One of the best albums ever

Yeah, I'm all set with this version. Give me Jason's all day, every day.
This version is Cover Me Up at home lol

Jason Isbell is a master class in songwriting

Wallen can't bring the emotion like Jason can. I mean Isbell lived the events that led him to write the song in the first place!
Probably because it Wallen's vocals sound robotic. Maybe I've been watching too much Wings or Pegasus videos but I'm 80% confident they've over used pitch correction on Wallen's track.
Wallen version much better and heartfelt in my opinion but music is individual and people like different things

@@Counterflak I always get the impression that his songs are incredibly pitch corrected to the point it annoys me.
@@jwp882000 Heartfelt? He didn't write the damn song, which was autobiographical for Isbell.
This is the JV version of a varsity song. Should have broken down Isbell's version -- the real one.
Already has.
@@stacylolley Well, silly me! I need to pay attention! :)
@@kellycny65 Nah. It's bullshit he did it again. Clicks, baby!
I trust Michael to make those decisions :)
Better Imo:)
Have we done Zach Top yet?
I'll pay any amount of money to hear zach sing cover me up
It’ll never be better than Jason’s version.
production alone takes it above, for me

Every parent in the last 5 years has had that conversation with their child. Good stuff.
When your mom says we have Jason Isbell at home but the Jason Isbell at home is Morgan Wallen😮😢😭
The way you describe Jasons songwriting is spot on.
100%. He’s the best.
"Better than Jason isbells version" she says...... vocal coach instantly fired, disowned and cancelled. 😂😂
I think it’s better.
Vocally, Morgan's is much higher quality... so I would listen to her.
It is better!!!
Morgan’s way better stop the cap. His voice is objectively more interesting

to heck with this guy
Morgan Wallen can sing, Ill give him that.
Thanks for your take on it brother. I learned a lot and appreciate the song more after watching your video. Keep it up! You have a gift and I appreciate you sharing it with the world.
This is the Mr. Pibb version of Cover Me Up.
Isbell plays it in D quite often now. I'm pretty sure he did when I saw him at Red Rocks earlier this year....
From the opening lyric you know it isn't as good as the original. Sorry but Jason is the antithesis to corny cowboy country with the forced inflection in their voices. Long life Jason
I saw Morgan Wallen perform this live in Denver have the whole thing on video.. it was an amazing experience.
Conveyed phenomenally Michael!
Great song choice and video! Those American pickups sound great in that thinline.
It depends if you want to hear the song or the singer. If you're looking for something that's polished, this is it. If you want to FEEL the song, only Jason's will do.
Cold take, professor. This is a great song. The dude in the video is doing bad karaoke in a teen movie.
Give him his recognition jason does it great !
That other guitar player sure does do a good job on this song. You're a better man than I am, Mr. P.!
I'm totally okay with people changing lyrics on songs they cover. But there is something very profound in Jason singing home was a dream, vs love. Home hits a crap ton harder in my opinion.

Morgan is great when your I.Q. is 70 to 80.

Always love the key of D. Only way it’d be cooler is if someone managed to make it work in open D
I was meant….made. Swore off….all. Is he intentionally changing the lyrics?

The other guitar player was fine.
Never can understand what Morgan is signing
love this song
Listen to the morgan wallen album version with the full band
At 5:10 when you started to play, I was hoping you were going to continue playing 😉
Also if you never did the live version of Talkin Tennessee that was right around this time you should check it out.
The first 0:08 of this video is the most relatable part of any video you've ever posted.
Right?!
You know I don’t know. Great dad line.
Lmao I was just thinking the same thing.
Michael, do you have any trouble playing and singing at the same time?
Morgan Wallen is very good singer. Maybe it's bias, but I don't feel the song like I do when I hear Jason sing it.
You still have that damn guitar
Jason does it much better…this is way too “country”…
Jason’s version reaches all audiences.
Damn. Awesome cover of an awesome song.

Please check out “Galaxy Brain” by intervals!!! You will have an EARGASM! You will love the tone! Much love, and great work. 👑
He does another great one called Wonderin’ About the Wind. Check it out.
How's that Frenzal Rhomb reaction coming along?
Sorry but No
Sounds empty. I think I heard him say he recorded it because he thought it sounded pretty :/
It’s a no from me. Trying too hard to do runs, changing lyrics, and the waft of autotune all combine to spoil a beautiful song.
There isn’t any autotune. There is a lot of reverb though and he didn’t intentionally change lyrics, he forgot one word. His studio version on his album has correct lyrics. It’s a solid cover and more country tuned. But it isn’t for everyone.

Autotuned? Something weird with those vocals. Or just an effect? “Boots” first line of the chorus.
Given your opinions of the Olympic opening ceremony, Morgan Wallen would be pissed you covering it one of his songs!
I'm guessing it's mostly women that like this version better.
Bro. Take a look at scorpions sails of charon
PLEASE react to Periphery.
I’m honestly pretty anti-Morgan Wallen. That said, I enjoyed this rendition.
Need to do some Zach Top

I love the original and Isbell is a national treasure, but this is a tacky, tacky cover with an exagerated fake accent. Makes me tune out immeadiately
**Guitar teacher REACTS: COVER of Jason Isbell’s Cover Me Up**
Ok
Morgan Wallen has some great live acoustic songs, but his album version of this cover is way better than this one.
I'm upset that all the pop country fans get to know this song now...
I’ll always prefer the songwriter’s version… its just more personal, especially this song. Wallen is a lightweight compared to Isbell.
Nope. Jason's version all day.
You gotta listen to "Don't Think Jesus" by Morgan Wallen as well, it's an absolute gem
Chk out you make it easy bye morgan
Definitely preposterous! But a damn fine rendition for the vocally range challenged.
Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?! Go back and watch your reaction to the real version of this song!!!
sorry, sorry....just actually watched the full reaction...i was too mad at the beginning....you get it...
This song shouldn’t be covered
Especially by the likes of that jack wagon
