    I keep my bees on a friends' farm in Pennsylvania. The past couple seasons they planted sunflower. My bees were all over them but no nectar in the hives. I guess something is missing in our soil to bring in the nectar.
    Great for the pollen

      Yes, lots of pollen brought in here also

    What variety of sunflowers are those ? If you know …I planted about 4 acres last year and had very few honey bees visit them. Plenty of black hornets and other pollinators just hardly any honey bees ..I’m in southeast Alabama .

      I have no idea what variety. The bees were all over them but they were pretty much the only thing in bloom.

    HELLO, BEAUTIFUL!!! PLEASE PROVIDE WATER RESOURCES FOR SUCH DRY AREAS. GREAT JOB THERE. TERRIBLE RE W/TURBINE!! LUCKY PRODUCE. GREECE SUFFERED BADLY FROM FLOODS THAT WASHED AWAY THOUSANDS OF BEEHIVES PLUS THE DIFFRENT BIG FIRES THAT TOOK PLACE. NOW ALL B/KEEPERS ARE SUFFEREING & AGRICULTURE SECTOR.
    STAY SAFE WITH ALL YOUR SWEET FAIRIES!!👍

    You are extremely lucky to have a nectar and pollen source in mid August. Mid July to mid September is the tougest time of year here in Central Texas. I think you guys also have cotton. How did the honey taste?

    • @hefleyhives
      @hefleyhives  11 місяців тому +3

      The only way to get a late summer flow around here (like most places) is to put them on certain row crops. Cotton is common around here most years but I got lucky and found these sunflowers in my area. Sunflower honey is darker and has kind of a nutty after taste we think.

    Did you ever get any significant honey after it was all said and done?
    I planted 5 acres here in GA and very little nectar even though the bees worked them like crazy! Was disappointed!

    In my part of world (Serbia) sunflower is most important honeycrop,in good year we have up to 30kg per hive and decent winter storage.

    • @hefleyhives
      @hefleyhives  11 місяців тому +1

      That's really good production! These averaged about 7kg. Terribly hot throughout the bloom and no rain. Thanks for tuning in from Serbia!

    I would have thought the girl would have been moving the nectar up by now to give her more room for laying. Do you know what brand of sunflower those are . I would love to taste that honey I have never had any sunflower but I am planting a bunch this year to give it a try . Looking forward to a later update on this yard . Thanks

      I have no idea what brand the flowers were. These were Carniolan daughter queens and they tend to be more frugal with their honey stores (i.e. storing more in the brood nest)

    As far as I know, bees really need water, just like everyone else on our planet, the question is, where do bees get water in this huge territory? 600 acres.

    Oh I feel sorry for those bees having to live with wind towers.🙁 They screw up the local ecosystem just like solar does and so not green in their building or upkeep. Wonderful field of sunflower for bee sand bees are looking great though.👍

      there is no proof that windmills or solar ruin the environment or ecosystem. oil and gas has a far worse impact on the environment than renewable energy does. stop spouting false information.
