    this is the biggest parallel between ireland and wales, even down to being asked "do you speak the language" with the most common answer "no"

      @@tFighterPilot Whether or not it's a sentence is irrelevant: more important is the fact that the real name of the village is simply Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, and the longer version was invented by a local businessman in the late 19th century to lure tourists.

      We don't speak it because people that could only conquer us by sheer numbers made it illegal for us to speak it. They brutalized us when we tried to speak it.

    Have you noticed every person that is anti-welsh or anti-'insert language here' can never actually speak that language!
    Show me a person that spends 4 years learning Spanish then turns around and says:

    Wonderful points being made. Our languages is what can unite us, but also make us wonderfully unique. Though I do not speak the language (yet), I truly believe that it should be politely celebrated as an encouragement for others to join in and learn.

    I'm an American with Welsh ancestry (on Dad's side) and Irish ancestry (on Mom's side). I find the Welsh language very interesting. It's a shame it's not being used very much.

    The word "Welsh" is Old English for "Foreign Slave". Why are 3 million Britons still referred to as Foreign Slaves 1500 years later? No public discussion of this racist insult whatsoever!

      Welsh is not that difficult! it's much easier than Russian or Ukrainian or other Slavic languages.
      I'm a Welsh learner in Caerdydd. I skipped the entry level course by doing it on Duolingo everyday. I'm taking the foundation level course (A2) now.
      Don't lose confidence!

    It's a shame. I rarely hear Welsh in Cardiff. Only twice on the street after I started to learn Welsh. Tafwyl is an exception. I also went to a very lovely Welsh bookshop and got to speak simple Welsh to the people there.
    I'm an Asian. Dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg nawr. Dw i'n dysgu level sylfaen. Dw i ddim yn gallu siara yn rhugl eto, ond dw i'n dysgu yn galed.

    So many English people living in Wales complain that government communication is produced bilingually and is a waste of money. What they do not understand is that it has to be bilingual so that they can understand......defend our Language against ignorance, arrogance and entitlement....

    the guy who says sometimes it gets in the way is a racist, so you cannot differentiate one language from another? you go abroad(as an example) and there is one sign (in whatever language) for a town and one in english and because there is the native language sign you cannot read the english sign? pathetic argument.

      Says some who has a low IQ - far more phonetically correct than English. has two extra vowels also.
      Oh yeah, let's not forget how alot of the English language was created by the druids. Combining latin and Welsh grammar with Germanic Runes and syntax.
      This is why the English have wanted it gone for so long.

      I am from Cwnbran Wayne and thank god not may people around this part of South East Wales think the same as you. Ever thought about moving to South East England and then you wouldn't have to worry about Welsh road signs. Get a life Wayne.

      A lot of people use it. Although Cardiff's dominant language is English, it does have more than 50,000 Welsh speakers. (Cardiff University's number is 100,000 but I doubt it) And many kids go to Welsh-medium schools here.
      I'm just a learner, but I love Welsh.
