  • When you talk about Planet Jupiter, you can't help but notice the powerful Great Red Spot that the planet has. The largest planet in our solar system is home to the biggest and most violent storm known to date. We're not sure how long it's existed on Jupiter, but it's estimated that the storm has been raging for an incredible 359 years since Robert Hook discovered it through his telescope in 1664. Over the years, several missions have explored this powerful storm. on Jupiter during its brief sojourns. Space probes such as Voyager 1 and 2 and the Cassini spacecraft have studied it from Earth.
The Hubble Space Telescope has recently been making observations of the planet Jupiter and the Great Red Spot. Hubble data suggest the red spot is shrinking and the storm was once big enough to swallow an incredible three Earth-sized planets, today it can fit just over one Earth, and the storm has picked up speed over the past decade. . Hubble data from 2008 to 2020 confirms that wind speeds around the edges of the Great Red Spot have increased by eight percent. The anticyclone also changed shape from oval to circular.
