I think the only sound that's better than an orchestra warming up is an orchestra tuning. It gets everybody's attention, the orchestra hall goes silent, and it's that little signal that we're about to go. It's that little burst of adrenaline and excitement, both on stage and in the audience.
I was a bassoonist back in the 80's. I studied at Indiana University, but gave up senior year when I realized i wasn't as mature as I needed to be and would not get work. Now, at 59, I just got a GOOD student Yamaha flute a year ago from my nephew who is an INCREDIBLE band director and just started playing the FLUTE at almost 60! Your videos are so inspiring and I am LOVING the instrument! Now, I came into some money and even got a bassoon! I'm playing both now and happier than EVER! I even want to upgrade my flute to an open hole, but my teacher and some pro friends are telling me that mine is actually still REALLY good and they would even play it for gigs! I appreciate all of your work and sharing! And I played Lincoln Portrait on Bassoon in the 70's! haha TWICE!
Thanks for vlogging again! I really love these. It's so cool to take a real life peak into what means to be a professional musician. You always assume practice is a very big part of it, but it was really eye opening to see just how much goes into it. I haven't been to Carnegie Hall yet, so it was so awesome to get a look inside- so beautiful (insert crying emoji).
Yes! So cool to see different versions of musician lives on UA-cam too! I love that the music world is so versatile and that there’s so many options for a successful career 🎉
I played the flute from the age of 4 to 23 years old and thanks to your vlog now I want to go back to find time in the routine to play now that I am 29 years old. Thanks
Thanks for the inspiration, the Bartok wow , my old Friend Kofi Burbridge would be so impressed. Keep up the great work, it’s keeping new flute players like me going!,,,
And to your comments about writing in cues and where other instruments play, I do that all the time in case I get lost during counting, I can get back on track based on the cues I’ve written. I call them “musical landmarks”. Also key changes, meter changes, etc.
It's during sleep that the brain processes the material, and your practicing and playing skills in reality improve. Is actually relevant to any kind of learning or problem solving in life.
Lol I totally understand the pieces being stuck in your head... sometimes for days 😵 I sing in a mixed choir for my church and we sing a lot of polyphonic renaissance pieces... so many lol they play through my brain on repeat all day. Another super fun vlog! 😊
Thanks a lot for this vlog! I’m a pianist from Belarus 🇧🇾 and UA-cam has just recommended this video ! It’s a big pleasure for me ! Will follow your channel definitely ❤️
I’ve missed you Katie!!! I haven’t played any of those but I have played a band version of Danzón No. 2 when I was in my masters. Having your dogs in the practice room is a great source of motivation
So cool! I do recognize that piece, I actually played it at the audition from my school this year :) it was definitely a challenge for me, but its a really beautiful piece😄
I sure feel you on these rehearsal/concert weekends! Just finished one with 2 world premieres, and we had two 3-hour rehearsals on the first day (Friday), then another 1 1/2 hr on Saturday before the first concert that evening. Then a drive to the concert the next day. And no time to recover, because I'm a HS science teacher in real life, so I have to get up at 6am and be ready to go! That was some Bizet Minuet there....and Soldier's Tale is a such a cool piece (I'm a clarinetist, so....of course!)
I'm so glad you're back! Love your vlogs. And my car broke down so I am mostly stuck at home at the moment. This really brightened my day. Thank you! Do you ever get mental blocks about certain aspects of your pieces (in my case usually high and fast runs) and how do you over come that? Slow practice back and forth with metronome? But at some point you need to speed up? And yes to having music in your head you have just performed. We did a movie concert and fragments of those tunes kept coming back for a week or so...
i love the sound of an orchestra warming up ... more from the audience side than onstage lol. i miss the warmup vibe when the ensembles have everyone walk onstage at once. Used to have some crazy weekends with driving and one performance/concert to another, or going to someone else's, my stamina for playing for hours much better then lol. Love your videos, want to get back down there to Lincoln center but everyone else is still afraid to get on the train so it'll have to wait a bit longer.( and will no longer drive down there, i managed to find myself driving on the wrong side under the El the last time so after that carpooled from then on hahaha)
I haven't been able to play my flute for almost two months due to a recent illness and when I saw your video (after not seeing you for a while) I feel like it's time to get back to playing and that I will be able to play... What I'm trying to say is that your video is giving me the nudge, kind of saying it's time.... I'm so happy for you and look forward to seeing more from you again. I hope you get to play with Lizzo, that would be amazing 😍. Thanks for the inadvertent inspiration 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
any flute players have any tips on how to get tarnish spots off my flute? I’ve used the polishing cloth, but they won’t come off😩😩. If someone could please reply that would mean the world!!
taking a break from flute practice to watch this video haha edit: no way i saw your tiktok all over my fyp the other day HAHAH i only just found this channel and didnt realise it was u
So cool to see your ‘musician life vlogs doing so well!’ I’m only a tiny musician vlogger but would love your tips for my channel :) my greatest flaw on UA-cam is probably consistency as I just don’t manage to upload regularly when I get busy performing! Hope all goes great for you!
@@katieflute idk if you’ll see this but i wasnt able to submit it, i wasnt ready and never got an email from ucla getting my application, i think everything happens for a reason but its still a little disappointing
Interesting.... when my son practice, he always starts out with his long~~, super long tones on his clarinet. He will start out playing the scale with long notes... I suppose the flutists don't do the long notes to warm up 🤷♂️

i play oboe, so i have to start everyone off when tuning 😭
@@imemibb I play oboe as well, so ik what you mean
I’ve always loved those sounds too.
The opening of Beethoven 9 always makes me think of the sound of an orchestra warming up. I love it.
Same 😌
When I saw the notification I literally clicked faster than me putting my flute away at the end of class
Me too!!!!
LMAO-
Same
SAME ❤
Yes, I recognize the piece. Something that a often pull out when I need to play something I am familiar with. (with which I am familiar.)
I always feel so motivated to practice after watching your videos! So glad you’re back to posting! ❤

You opening your case and seeing all the engraving and the rose gold with silver keys ❤❤❤ makes me want to go flute shopping
Do itttt 😏✨
Concerts are so stressful for even the audience, you can feel the tension. I cant imagine what it feels like to actually be on stage
you're stressed as part of the audience?!? i only feel excitement
its more that tightness in your chest, the tension is really high, especially before the soloist is about to enter the concert hall
I played a piece in concert last weekend that keeps switching from 11/8 to 13/8 and vice versa. The counting is INGRAINED in my soul.

The piece that you asked if we recognize is the piece I am going to play for solo and ensamble! Ahhhh! That’s so cool! It’s Minuet by Bizet.
So glad you’re posting again!! 🫶 WE LOVE YOU
Thank you for watching and for the support! 🥰🥺
The way I squealed with joy when I saw Yannik Nezet-Seguin and Joyce DiDonato at the end…I am living vicariously through you and your vlogs!

Awww I love Henry sitting with you
do you know why he had 2 collars on? (earlier part of the video only)
Yay! So excited you are posting again. I stumbled across your videos recently, after picking up the flute again after a pretty long hiatus.
Thanks for being an inspiration. I want to go right now to practice.
You posting literally makes my day!

ooh so happy to see you’re playing lincoln portrait. I just played it with PYO and it’s such a neat piece

I'm not a musician, but a dancer. I can absolutely say that I will often leave rehearsal with rhythms or counts stuck in my head on loop
i love watching ur vlogs and seeing what its like to be a professional musician!! I'm a flautist and my dog also whines when i practice lmao
I had my flute exam today and one of my pieces was the Poulenc sonata in your intro! What a coincidence 😂
Great video. So fun to see the PA and NYC sights with you and experience the butterflies. See you soon via Zoom.

Hi !
Do you use a specific app to keep your scores on your tablet ?
Thanks
NO WAYYYY YOU PLAY DANZÓN 2?! I love that song since forever
What software do you use for sheet music on your iPad?
I love the Poulenc intro!

Me: A MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND WARMING UP 💀

Can you please do a video about switching to reading music digitally? I think I printed over 50 pages for a concert today. 😂😂😂😂
Excelente vídeo!! 👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Obrigada!
Poulenc’ Sonata is beautiful
Is it hard to have to fill time between your rehearsals when you don't live in the immediate area? So really get to relax before performance?

you probably answer this question really often but what kind of flute do you have? its absolutely gorgeous - im jealous!
Katie, What's the name of the electronic music score tablet that you use. Is it on Amazon? Thank you🙂
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice!
What's the name of the intro song?
At first I thought the cover on the harp was a giant oven mit😂…

HI YERIM!!! 🤩🥰
BTW, Lizzo got my flute...the John Lunn green gold one with leaves etc. $55K! Was at the Flute Centre of New York. 😆
whats the excerpt you played in the beginning? it sounds so familiar but i cant out my tongue on it

What's the intro song?
Hello fellow flautists
Hi I have a Question what flute do you have?😊
Do you have perfect pitch? It’s one of my insecurities as I don’t have it and don’t feel complete.
Please share what eye patches those are!
Hi Karina! I'm honestly not sure of the brand (or if they even do anything haha 😂) but I got a big pack of them from TJMaxx
@@katieflute Thanks, I’ll definitely check it out!!
I hope you make a collaboration with Spencer Rubin, he's basically the oboist version of you ^_^
Interesting.... when my son practice, he always starts out with his long~~, super long tones on his clarinet. He will start out playing the scale with long notes... I suppose the flutists don't do the long notes to warm up 🤷♂️
😍😍😍😍
👏🏻❤
I play the flute
Do you know why your head heart if you play too long? That happening all the time for me🎶
What's your secret to having such perfect-looking teeth? 😁
If you and Lizzo did a duet, i could die happy is all im going to say. I hope it happens!
I'm looking forward to your career as a full-time homemaker.
