La scatola ha uno sportello per mettervi dentro le esche: sarde o dei pezzi di pesce qualsiasi,

Si lega una sagola all’occhiello della trappola e si lancia in fondo al mare.
Il granchio sente il pesce dentro la scatola e cerca di prenderlo, ma rimane impigliato con le chele al groviglio di lacci che c'è all'esterno.
Se i granchi sono molto grossi e riescono a tagliare i lacci fatti con il filo di nylon sostituiteli
