- A short demonstration from www.trendmarkin... on setting up and using the electrochemical metal marking system, used to permanently etch metal products with a contrasting black print similar to laser-marking.
A low-voltage current is applied through a stencil to mark into the surface of a metal product.
Different stencils are available depending on the type of information required, the demonstration shows only "permanent stencils", long-lasting a re-usable electrochemical marking stencils
The power supply in this case is the EU80 power unit. It has adjustable settings to create the best mark on a variety of metals and compensate for the different stencil designs/compositions.
Also available is the EU100, EU300 "Classic" and the EU500 "Classic". There is also a more advanced alternative to the "Classic" called the "Expert".
However, the EU80 is perfectly suited for small to medium marks in a manual setting.
The settings you use depends on the size of the mark, on the material you are marking and the electrolyte you are using. It does vary a bit, although for many materials the setting remains the same and only the technique varies. The etching system comes with detailed instructions and a guide on the correct settings to select in order to obtain an optimum mark. There is then a bit of fine-tuning to suit the individual application but that is mainly done by the operator at the time.

Good question! There are a few different stencil types. The most popular are pre-made stencils which we make according to your design on a special material which lasts maybe 1000-3000 etches. To make stencils yourselves, we have a disposable material to print with a dot-matrix printer, but quality isn't the same as our high-res stencils. Then there is a handheld printer to make disposable stencils (mainly text/numbers). See trendmarking . com . au / metal-etching-stencils for extra info.

We have different grades of stencil. Some are re-useable only a few times but can be made by the customer, others are pre-made by us and will last up to 3000 etchings per stencil, other stencils are super-fine but thinner and last up to 1500 etchings
I assume you mean how deep it the etches mark? The end result depends on the electrolyte used, the power settings and the time - as well as the material. 5-6micron is normal for light surface etching, 50-60 micron is deep etching.

How the hell does the etched wording come out inked black??
What will happen if you use this on a piece of metal, then apply another finish over the piece, such as hot caustic bluing? Will the etching still be clear & visible?

Why should we use the conductive paper or tape. What will happen if there is no conductive paper?

Why wouldn't you just cut your letters into a negative stencil using a digital vinyl cutter ($200 on ebay) and apply them with transfer tape like a car window sticker. Then just do your etch over the vinyl followed by removing the stencil when done. Paint, solvent to clean up???? Who has time for that?
