- Government officials are not allowed to pursue personal vendettas or retaliate against people for criticizing their policies.
But that is precisely what is happening in the town of Parksley on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, where out-of-control bureaucrats have done everything in their power to target and eliminate the town’s first-and only-food truck simply because they dislike its owners and the fact that they dared to work with the Institute for Justice to call for the repeal of the town’s unconstitutional food truck ban.
Now, IJ is teaming up with the food truck owners to file a federal lawsuit to vindicate their #1stAmendment #4thAmendment and #14thAmendment rights.

This happened to me in Brighton, Utah. The mayor owns a restaurant and hotel and didn’t like competing with my small business. What did he do? He took away my zoning and business license for frivolous reasons. To appeal his decision. I had to pay $1000 even for a hearing with an administrative law judge, who is hired by him. we eventually won, but it’s a matter of time before comes up with some new way to try to stifle other businesses. And by the way, did I tell you that he was convicted of a DUI and yet he’s on the board of the police force? The town attorney was also arrested on felony theft charges. You can fight the system that they still have the power.
This kind of rampant corruption is despicable.

Worst part is that another town employee told me to stop pushing back against them because he’s worked in other small towns and the mayor can basically get away with what he wants to. I’ve tried to get the local news outlets to write about it and bring some sunshine to the issue but no one wants to for some reason. One small silver lining - when I went to the police dept to get the body cam of the mayor’s DUI, they were supposed to charge me $25 (which I was happy to pay). The clerk handed me the disks and smiled and said it was ‘on the house’ :).

It's really hard to get people to pay attention to these issues and even then it's hard to keep their attention long enough for them to actually take action or vote. There's a lot of uphill battles everywhere we look these days.
They want to annihilate competition. So nasty and childish.
Zoning laws are blatant tyranny

In Florida, a lot of businesses have had their ability to accept food stamps arbitrarily taken away by the government with no explanation.
This FORCES the people to use their cards at the big box stores that can accept EBT
Also in FL, at least by the beach, the counties dont want small businesses. They want big chains. To prevent small development they will put heavy water table regulations that cause building to be in the millions. A big business cam afford the high cost of development, but a small business can not.
Because a handful of small businesses would sell non cold food items to people for stamps. A few bad apples to spoil the bunch
There's a solution there, but it requires there to be less arbitrary restrictions on what food people can spend their EBT/stamps on.

Again, I’m saying it’s not the type of food, it’s if you sell approved food but they choose who can accept food stamps to funnel government money directly to big companies at the expense of small businesses
If small businesses die, the economy will suffer for regular people, which is most of us
Don't fixate on a symptom, understand all of the symptoms and how they contribute to the ailment. Identify the common systems afflicted by this dynamic. Identify the other afflictions and how they contribute to this one, because the issue is much bigger than small businesses and things in this country are much worse than you think.

It is an Authoritarian vs. Libertarian issue. And there is only one Libertarian Party. Thank goodness for the non-partisan Institute for Justice actually doing the work!
Of course there’s red and blue you have freedom, loving people, and people that want a communist style government, that’s red and blue and then for some weird reason the red seems to want to do a whole bunch of war and a lot of terrible things because they’re just terrible people and then you have the blue that just wants to enslave everyone and starve everyone to death and put make everyone become vegans. There’s not very many we the people left and the government is ran by those crazies, the most extreme from both groups, and unfortunately the red is limited to how many freedom people are in that group, because it seems to be that just a bunch of neocons are in that group. I remember when the blue used to be anti-war and anti-big Pharma now they’re the biggest war and big Pharma pushers out there, besides the neons in the red group, but of course there are teams, red and blue, and that is actually very ancient, and it has to go back to the god JANUS, it’s a red and blue situation.

Physically Attacking Food trucks is wrong. However, limiting where they can set up shop is necessary if the brick and mortar restaurants have to pay taxes, fees, and be certified in order to stay in business, but the food trucks don't. You have to be fair.
It's not an either or situation. Brick and mortar restaurants have far high margins and food trucks do pay to use the roads like the rest of us. We are a capitalistic Nation, if the brick and mortar can't take the pressure then that's on them. Likewise with the food trucks. Good business should prevail based on what the people want, not what the government thinks is best.
What taxes dont food trucks pay
Ask a food truck owner what taxes,feeds licenses and certifications they pay.

In Louisiana, my friend has had a taxi business for 20 years. When he wanted to do rideshare, he couldn't afford the insurance and the rules that the State legislature made that line up identically to the rules made by Lift and Uber. So in essence they just took their rules and applied them to us not even asking if it's good for us.

The war on small business isn't quiet. Now in California, there are signs for miles barring food trucks with expensive permits from cities. Prices on them just keep going up.

Agree. Here in rural KY locals rrespassed my property, tore down three green hosues then proceeded to burn and cur all of my berry shrubs, stole potatoes and planted grass seed in my negetable beds.

I have an MA in urban planning and was always in favor of tax free zones and zoning regulations but over the course of years you see no matter what the intention was they can always be manipulated to favor individuals with an inside tract or access to capital that others done have.

Pittsburgh did exactly this to Independent Towing Truck businesses..... increased regulation, insurance and other mandatory safety features that made it too expensive

If i own a business and i pay for all the marketing that brings people in, i certainly don't want someone piggy backing off my marketing and stealing my customers right in front of my face.
