I don't know if Justin thought that or if he was purposely trying to break out), their label knew that JC was creating an album with a similar sound to Justins (JC didnt know that they both had similar sounds) so they purposely screwed JC over so that Justin could break out and JC wouldn't overshine him. They liked what Justin was creating and purposely pushed JC aside. JC was also under the impression that NSYNC was going to be taking a short hiatus and getting back together. The music that is on JC's album, Schizophrenic, wasn't what he actually wanted to release. A lot of those songs were like him just messing around and not being serious, he didn't actually want them to be on his album. His label last minute was like just put it all in an album and release it. If he had actually been able to release the music he wanted to, he would have blown up and his career would have been even more successful than Justin's has ever been. Breaks my heart bc JC was my fav of the group, was more talented than Justin in every way. When the group was taking a hiatus, so many people (hosts of MTV, VH1, popular radio stations, etc) thought that if anyone was going to break out and make it big it would have been JC. He was writing a lot of the music especially towards the end and his vocal skills surpassed Justin by miles. He wrote "The Game Is Over", "The Two Of Us", "Up Against The Wall" and "Selfish" from their album, Celebrity. He co-wrote "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays", "Space Cowboy (Yippi-Yi-Yay)", "No Strings Attached", "Digital Get Down", and "Bringin' Da Noise."

Vocal wise I totally agree with you. But as far as song choice/writing/composing, I think that's the difference between them. JC unfortunately made terrible song choices and experimented too much unlike Justin who knew exactly what he wanted/needed to do.
