I also started my acquaintance with Nirvana from this album. I remember my sister brought a cassette from school, I was 11 years old. At first I didn't understand the music, but a year later I was given a cassette of "the Best of Nirvana" and then I naturally went crazy for the rest of my life
Haha the speaker wasn’t on, just the direct out signal was! The tone master let’s you do that, and is probably the only way I can record that twin breakup without becoming deaf 🤪
1:25 i think that is the same bridge that appears in that documentary about kurt, on the animated scenes, (Montage of Heck) also love your little dance as you play the songs!
I remember listening to this album in its entirety when it first came out. They broadcast the entire thing on the radio and I was on a road trip with friends. I laid in the back of the van and went to sleep jamming to it.
The tone was fantastic, I think you managed to replicate them very well, Whiskah is still one of my favourite Nirvana live albums. Great video! Edit: I liked that you added in the chorus intro in drain you, personally your del mar tone is very accurate but i would say the bleach tone is the best here.
Had to throw in that chorus to accurately recreate that intro 😉 Thank you, very happy you enjoyed it! The Bleach tracks were the first ones I tried to recreate, I told myself I'd only attempt this video if I could get close to those!
Hey, been watching your videos for the last month or so after one of them appeared in the recommendations. I think because I have the same amp as you and I was watching reviews.I actually bought it as I was after something that would replicate the early Steve Jones sound. I was a huge Nirvana fan back in the day and I can remember struggling to learn their songs when I started playing. I never got the connection that the Twin Reverb was a great amp for Nirvana, but I have enjoyed playing some of the old tunes based on your settings, which have been excellent.
Thank you, I’m happy you’ve been enjoying my videos! When I got the Twin, I was worried it wouldn’t get many Kurt tones but man was I wrong. it’s been able to replicate any Nirvana tone I throw at it so far! Have you been able to get an early Steve Jones sound? I LOVE the pistols, I haven’t tried that!
@@NirvanaGuitars Yes, pretty easy. Vol 10, Treble 9, Mid 8, bass 4. Others turned off. I have a LP Custom but your Jag should get you close. Warning, although not as loud as a tube twin reverb, it is still deafening with the attenuator at the lowest setting. I use an overdrive (any one will do ) at lower volume to get the same tone. If you are a punk fan you should check out ‘Amyl and the Sniffers’ my favourite modern punk band. I think Kurt would have liked them…
Great stuff. I thing Wishkah has an odd tone overall like a multiple times copied reverby tape 😉 If you could ever do what you do for Jerry Cantrell, that would be gold 😁
If i didnt have nerve damage in my hands I always wanted to learn how to play all of nirvanas songs but i cant due to issues with nerves in my hands, lack of feeling and etc. I still have my stratocaster i will never sell it I just want to meet someone who can play it for me because I want to see it get some use.
I think as a long nirvana fan (1996-2006) some of those songs you did score right , but even how you tried, they all aint right. but dont get disappointed because of this, because it is impossible to get them correct without asking Kurt, but still, dont worry, when we transfer our physical being into a spiritual, after death, we are all one.
i made a drain you cover from del mar, i used the EQ settings from the in utero tour tone video but i tuned to E-Standard tuning, if you could check it out and give me some feedback on what i need to change, i’d highly appreciate it. here’s the gear i used 2021 Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar NOS Marshall Code 50 (with footswitch to change presets)
Hey I love your nirvana videos! I'm trying to learn his music, and I see that you strum like he does which i try and mimic but is actually deceivingly more complexed lol do you have a tutorial video of generally how to play the way he did or is there a video that you can send me that you learned it or whatever? Thank you!
Thank you so much! I've been thinking about doing a Kurt guitar lesson video or maybe even a series. I don't have a tutorial video (yet 😉) or a video I learned from, I'm sorry. I learned his little habits and nuances by watching/playing along to Nirvana shows for the last 15 years lol 👴🏻
Not with a Boss DS2 and Small Clone unfortunately, you just gotta be fast! In a lot of 91/92 performances of Teen Spirit, the first notes in the verses Kurt doesn’t have the chorus pedal on but then he’ll click in time for for the rest of them
This may be a weird statement but I have a Boss Katana mk2 50 as my main amp, but when using the DS2 it seems very hard to mimic the tones of Nirvana. It just sounds off, the way you make it sound is pretty identical. I don't know if you have any experience with a Boss Katana but it is rather unfortunate that I cannot get the tone that I am looking for.
@@TheMrCakebomb because Kurt used the Jaguar for School at Paradiso. this is a From The Muddy Banks of The Wishkah tone video. That is a live album. I use the Eastwood for all songs in my Bleach studio tone video.
Thank you for making this video! This album was my first real exposure to Nirvana, and it's the way I first learned to play their songs, as well as the benchmark I referenced Kurt's tones from (not from studio). Anyway. I've been obsessed with the first few, chugging power cords he plays on Anneurysm before the distortion kicks in, for as long as I can remember. Cool to know it's just a really great guitar, and a really awesome slightly overdriven clean amp.. Kinda blew my mind, but that simple tone is my favorite of all time. Thanks for the in depth analysis!
wattage at 5, but I had the speakers muted and only recorded with the direct out. direct out around 5, cab sim on mode 1. It was like that for every song!
For some reason when I listen to some Nirvana songs without Kurt's vocals, I feel like the guitar is literally speaking for some reason. I don't know if it's my imagination, or if I'm fucking stoned.
You take every detail to perfection, congratulations man! Nirvana is the band of my life and i never expected to watch such great videos about their gear, their tone, their history almost 30 years since Kurt’s death. Thank you so much for you incredible work and this amazing channel. Please keep it up!
Thank you! I used Ernie Ball for years, but am switching to strings Kurt used. Dean Markley for Nevermind era guitars, and GHS Boomers for In Utero era
You are the real fucking deal!
🥹🙏🏻 thank you!
This really is amazing love how you show the amp and pedal settings while playing
This album got me into Nirvana, old enough to have bought it on casette. Great tones as always, very ambitious video!
That's awesome! Thank you, this was one is by far the tone video that has taken me the most time but I'm happy with how it came out!
I remember going in the tram to the shop to get the CD, ah, valuable moments of life 😊
Saaaame!

You had the volume up to 6 on that Twin at one point and you’re standing within arm’s length away from it. You’re a mad man! I love it! Great video.
Haha the speaker wasn’t on, just the direct out signal was! The tone master let’s you do that, and is probably the only way I can record that twin breakup without becoming deaf 🤪
@@NirvanaGuitars where is the direct signal output? in the back?
That tone for drain you was absolutely killer! Great job on the recreation!!
Thank you! Loved analyzing and recreating the Del Mar tone
I love the Polly tone you got for this! It sounds amazing, I absolutely love all of the tones you got
Thank you! I was super happy with how the 89 Polly and Breed tones came out
I love how you put every detail, the upstrokes for smells like teen spirit really did make that difference for me🎉 wow 🤩
I wish I’d found your channel a lot earlier. Your dedication is unparalleled. How about a tone recreation for You Know You’re Right?
Amazing! Loved Drain You! Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Awesome job! Congrats!! I think you should consider doing the Pat's tone too. He's a nice guy and deserve the homage. Cheers!
1:25 i think that is the same bridge that appears in that documentary about kurt, on the animated scenes, (Montage of Heck) also love your little dance as you play the songs!
Very accurate! Great tones and the way you play the guitar is even the way Kurt played (the swinging of the wrist and everything) very nice.
I remember listening to this album in its entirety when it first came out. They broadcast the entire thing on the radio and I was on a road trip with friends. I laid in the back of the van and went to sleep jamming to it.

It's funny how Spank Thru was a new song to us, being one of their oldest.

Out of curiosity, which ones did I not get right? I’m always looking for feedback and to improve
Well it's know that Kurt didn't play the songs the same way each time.
Awesome job!!!
Thank you!

nice video man, my favorite tone in this video is probably blew
Great choice 😁
Have you done a “You Know You’re Right” guitar tone? If not, could you? I’m trying to get it myself.
Nice “Rolling Stones” t-shirt
Falta um Graphic Equalizer assim como no Mesa Boogie Studio .22 de Kurt para boost nos médio e agudos.

Wishkah Milk It is my favorite overall live Nirvana track that’s been officially released so far. Performance and mix are both perfect!
I have the same eastwood and this ist the best guitar 🤟🤟

Wait I just realized that when they played Del Mar it’s the same month and day as my birthday😂
That's a great birthday show to have! My wife was born on 12/13/93, Live & Loud day and I tell her all the time that I'm jealous haha!
0:39 just like dream
You should make a cover of Incesticide
That’s on my to do list 😁
You’re pronouncing Reading wrong. Just a heads up. Drain you sounded great!
Is there a way to switch from a distorted sound to a clean+chorus sound in one shot? I have only two feets 🥲
Not with a Boss DS2 and Small Clone

Have you tried eq'ing it this way? Treb 4, Mids 8, Bass 5. Play in the pick up position
How do u make the sound before school ?
That phase 4 Hi-Flier tho
Muito Bom esse Vídeo.

whats drop D tuning in E flat
what is the name of this amplifier from fender.sou from Brazil I really like your videos. Here in Brazil everything is very expensive.
Thanks! It's a Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb. All gear is listed in the description and is discussed in the video's intro
You should totally get a ds-1 for the proper replication. There only like $50
How much does the competition mustang cost? Looking on reverb it’s $3k minimum lol
If you’re looking to get an original 1969, then yeah that sounds about right for a starting price 😅
yet again another awesome video
Thank you so much!
School is on the Bleach record 😅
Yes it is
@@NirvanaGuitars why didn‘t you use the eastwood for it?
@@TheMrCakebomb because Kurt used the Jaguar for School at Paradiso. this is a From The Muddy Banks of The Wishkah tone video. That is a live album.
I use the Eastwood for all songs in my Bleach studio tone video.
У Nirvana они минус тон играют
А так это слишком чисто звучит
Kurts tones throughout the years got less and less abrasive since bleach
That’s a great observation, I’d have to agree!
I never liked the Del Mar tone
Normal people: Drop C#/Db
NirvanaGuitars: Drop D in E flat
video's still great though :)
GREAT TONE!!
Thank you!
I, myself am a guitarist and I love recreating tones but I was wondering what’re your opinions on using a “Behringer” pedals?
Youve got the In Utero sound dead on. Especially Heart Shaped Box and Scentless Apprentice. Sounds identical.
i am a year late but i would like to ask, what was the boss ds1 settings and or if i can have the source that has the settings
FYI- Reading is pronounced "Red-ing" :) Ignore the "a" lol
