Very honest review😂! I bought the SEAT version recently, the Arosa. As you say, they are very Go-Cart like to drive, a lot like the original BL Mini in fact. Mine has the same rust along the roof channels, and the lacquer peel, although its not as noticible as the car is black. Quality feel to the interior, nice red back lighting to the instruments, power steering is well weighted too. Doors are indeed huge, the restraining strap mechanism in the drivers door has ripped out internally!
The red ones were notorious for the paint peel/reaction with the lacquer for some reason. (Other colours were ok...) Gearbox was also a weak point on some models, as you've found! That one looks like it's had a hard life. I love my 1.7 SDI Lupo though :)
I think the problem with the clutch could’ve been the pedal box. They’re one of the most prone things on Lupos and 6N/2 Polos. The part of the pedalbox that holds the clutch pedal over time fatigues and eventually bends down. The least of the poor Lupos problems by the sound of it though!
I think you have a bad unit... I have a Lupo as well. Black color from 2002 and no rust or such things. 1.0 MPI petrol engine. I like it but I would only recommend it for women, students or old people. It can be really fun to drive but the trunk is really small and can fit two big bags from the near market. You can still get the back seats down and it gets a lot bigger of course. As for fuel usage I would say 7 or 8 liters on 100 km. It really depends on the way you drive it. Interior parts are kind of hard to find. I would add that its pretty easy to find a parking spot for this tiny car.

I have a 3L one, it has one of the most unreliable transmissions ever made. Thinking of converting it to a manual.
I just bought a 1.4 tsi in black. Got some esthetic rust to contend with.
If you squint. Really squint. It looks like an old Merc from the front.
