    Mr A another spot on review, I have both 100-400 and 200-600, 6 months ago I started using both on the A7R4 and I find a slight IQ improvement with the Gmaster. On occasions where I am balancing cropping against the extra reach of the 600, the 600 starts to have an advantage. You are dead on about the portability of the 400 and I can walk through the woods all day with that lens, not so much with the 600 which I try to get on a monopod as soon as I can, lol. If I could only have one it would be the 100-400 but I am blessed to have had the funds for both 🙏😊. I happy to see you posting videos and I hope it means you and your loved ones are safe while the world is in chaos, I am right in the middle of it as I work in NY as a first responder, godspeed my friend

    This lens never leaves my bag. I absolutely love it. I got a good deal on it used and so I chose it over the 200-600 because while I occasionally shoot wildlife, I also like telephoto landscape photography, and 100-400 was a more versatile range for what I shoot. It made a nice upgrade from the 70-300 G lens I was using before.

    I'm actually lucky enough to own both the 100-400mm and the 200--600mm and the primary difference in what I pack is simply activity and size. The 100-400mm is great for sports games and medium distance birds on a casual bird walk. It also packs better and goes on vacations, offering chances to capture birds I would never have had otherwise. Unless the sole purpose of your travel is wildlife photography, no one is packing the 200-600mm into their carry-on. The 200-600mm is for the person who is sure they will be birding (or other wildlife shooting) and wants the best image possible by having the reach. I think the 100-400 is the Swiss Army knife but if you just want to photograph wildlife, as Dustin says, just go with the 200-600mm and be a happier shooter (if only because of the internal zoom)

    Hi, I recently purchased the Canon EF 100-400 L lens to use on my Sony a7III with a Metabones adapter. I should have watched a previous video of yours where you reviewed Canon lens on Sony cameras. Although the Canon lens has gorgeous color and excellent sharpness, it hunted a lot in low light, even when I cranked up the ISO on my Sony. Needless to say, I returned the Canon lens and instead purchased the native Sony 100-400 GM lens. What a difference is focusing and speed! My only quibble is that I wish it had full-time manual focus override. Otherwise, i love it. Thank you for another excellent review! 👍🏼🙏🏼👋🏼

    Great review Dustin. I have been using the lens for 6 months and very impressed with the versatility. I was using my Canon 400mm f4 DO adapted which was sharper however the AF considerably slower on my A7R3.
    The A7R3 AF works good/OK in good light however the A9 would sometimes be a better option for me for wildlife.

    Thanks for another great review Dustin. After great deliberation I chose the 100-400 over the 200-600 because of its quite exceptional close up ability. I find the very short minimum focus makes it ideal for nature photography enhancing its focal range. I have also used it with the 2x extender and an extension tube and get great results with plants and insects. Mind you I only paid about USD$1800 here in Australia for the 100-400GM.

      I planned to get the 70-180 for travel, but then the price was 2/3 of the GM, so I got that just before the last price increase of the GM, which is half the price of the Tamron. Now the 200-600 costs the same as the GM 1 year ago, and almost the same as the Tamron. Prices are crazy for the time, as our currency crashed together with oil prices. Will buy a 24-105 for travel later, if travelling ever becomes possible again? Shot today handheld with the GM: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PermaLiv_Hovinsholm_g%C3%A5rd_04-05-20.jpg

    Great review. Im torn between the Tamron 70-180 and the Sony 100-400. I will mostly use it for sport like Track and Field, Rugby and Cricket. I currently have the Sony A9 with the Tamron 28-75 and need a longer lens, but not sure which one to get. Where im from there is not a big difference in price. At the moment there is a special on all Sony Lenses and the Tamron is way more expensive here than in the US. There is only about $550 difference between the two lenses. But im leaning towards the Sony. Hope i am making the right decision.

      Foto4Max that is why im torn between the two lenses. Both have there advantages and disadvantages. One has F2.8. But the other has 400 reach I’ve decided to go with the Sony 100-400. If the Tamron was $ 1200 here it would have been a no brainer. Hope i made the right decision

I must say I had my doubts whether should I had bought the 100-400 GM for its IQ and focusing speed, but after practicing more with the 200-600 G, I must say it’s amazing. Maybe some day, I’ll test the 100-400 GM, but for now... will stick to the 200-600 G. Excellent review! Thank you for sharing!

    Thank you for great review Dustin. I think the main difference between Sony 100 400 vs 200 600 is when you use cheaper bodies. I have tried both on A7III and a6400, the auto focus is day and night difference between two lenses. The 100 400 is much faster and better contrast and color. I compared A7III with 200 600 and A6400 with 100 400 which give the same length. The photos with a6400 are much sharper and auto focus is much much faster than 200 600. And 200 600 does not like filters, if you put on a filter, it decreases IQ...

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +2

      Hmmm, that doesn't actually make sense in theory, as lens performance is independent of camera performance. If you were talking a major resolution difference, that might potentially be true.

      @junor798 4 роки тому

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you so much for reply. I know, I could not figure out. I really hoped 200 600 will work out, because it will be less expensive and has longer reach. I mostly doing birds in flight (instagram.com/gmb_wildlife_photography/). But I got way better result with a6400 with 100 400. Since I am doing it just for hobby not career. It does not justify to buy a A9 or A7Rvi bodies. I am sure the result will be different.
