Best advice on buying a used car, buy a car in which they made a TON of them and they are common in your area. This is so you can actually get parts for it at a reasonable cost when the stuff breaks. And local mechanics know how to wok on the stuff since they have fixed that particular model in the past.
I have a friends Infinity in the garage. I cant get aftermarket ball joints for it since they are built into the control arms. I need new control arms, but can only get OEM at a cost of $900 for the pair. Same with struts, it could use new struts, but I can only find OEM at a cost of $400 per strut. 🙄If it were a common Toyota or Chevy, I would be at $400 into parts as opposed to $1700.

A lot of good lessons in this one! Never heard of the magnetic clutch exhaust valve control - now I have no excuse not to avoid that. Amazing amount of work to replace that thing - people need to see this! Sounds like a simple job, but noooooo! It's the price you pay for having a luxury car, I guess.....

BMWs are worse because of the specific diagnostic tools required to find those issues/codes. Some shops won’t touch those European cars because of this. Replacement parts are also a premium. They’re awesome vehicles and money makers for independent import shops.

I would most assuredly like the other repairs to be recorded and played ! Every bit of learning is valuable in some way and besides my daughter has a very close car to this car and the repairs are unusually personal in nature! Please continue the path you are on with this one! Please don't let the negative people involved with your endeavors , they are not worth the effort or time! Only positive influence can push life along!!! Take personal time with the kids, they will be grown before long and you don't want to miss that! Cool they can be close at the shop, I absolutely loved my shop time with my papa bear! Family then friends and then business and you will be eternally successful!

Eh, I wouldn't undervalue the negative that way. Not all things that are negative are inherently _bad,_ after all, and there's the concept of "toxic positivity" out there as well, so not all things that are "positive" are "good," either. Sometimes what people label "negativity" is rally just someone trying to keep you from getting unnecessarily hurt or following a genuinely dead-end path in life. It takes some life experience to tell the difference between someone trying to keep you from getting hurt form someone trying to control you for their own benefit, though.

Leave a rag hanging between the vice jaws like a sort of hammock, when youre punching small bits like those pins out. The rag will catch the pin so you dont lose it. Bonus is you dont have to bend over to pick them up. Theres already enough bending, flexing, and contortionist practice in our field. No use making more.

IT Tech here... Something I've learned over the years is not to assume I will remember or see every screw for everything in a computer. For instance when talking about a motherboard it can be mounted using anything from zero screws to seventeen. That's anything between 0 and 17 screws. I've learned to count them out when mounting a motherboard. It's not a all that uncommon occurrence that once you get to motherboards with ten or more screws you end up missing one. But if you just keep count it is easy to notice.
Now I know, ten or more screw for a motherboard most probably means that missing one isn't all that critical, as compared to missing a bolt for a timing cover like the one in this video where there's oil that can leak. But it's the principle. If people pay me to work on their computers then I will do a complete and accurate job with nothing as simple as missing screws to mar the result. It's also the reason I always hoist the finished computer over my head and turn it every way I can think of while shaking it vigorously listening for anything rattling around inside. Again, if they are willing to pay me for building a server or workstation then it has to be solid. No screws rattling around, no cards not secured, no leads flopping in the wind. Oh and it's tested again after the shaking to make sure nothing moved, and the graphics card is still securely fixated in the slot by the retention mechanism of the case.
Yea, i know you can't very well hulk that car over your head and shake it, but again it's the principle. And I've seen you following it as you use copious amounts of wire loom and secures the cabling out of the way so ot wont flop around.
Thing is you don't try to meet the expected average use, you try to meet the worst case use you can think of, and then some. That extra margin really makes a difference, and often doesn't cost all that much neither in time nor components. Customers might not see the use the first time, but after a few years they usually start to see a huge difference.

Im surprised Nissan didn't have a gasket you could order, it's where I ordered my replacement gaskets from. Granted, that particular cover didn't fit my Maxima, & the ones from DuBai don't come with gaskets...neither do they come from Nissan when you order the Cam Cover. It is nice that they come with the VTT though. It's also good to see DoBe parts work though...
I had the same code P0014 on same bank for at least a year & it never made my Maxima stall. I could feel a lack of power when leaving a light. It make my CVT "shift" early.

That metal gasket reminded me of taking apart my 78' Goldwing engine back in the 80's. It splits vertically, right down the middle of the crankcase, and has NO gasket, or o-ring, what so ever. When it's reassembled, you cover the mating surfaces with this thin, yellowish gasket sealer, and that's all. When it solidifies, it's very rubberized, and there's no oil leaking later.

Ray, You may want to provide the customer a separate itemized bill for the parts and labor related to the valve timing repair. If there are counterfeit parts available for that magnetic clutch assembly that would suggest to me that failure of that part is not an uncommon event. And since such a failure could cause the engine to die at speed on the highway that would likely attract attention from NHTSA and warrant a TSB or recall from the manfacturer. (Did anyone check?). So despite the age and mileage of this particular vehicle the owner may be due a repair cost reimbursement from Infiniti.

Is he still scrubbing the walls?

I haven't watched yet, but if that part fixes that code, I'll be shocked. In 4 years at Nissan, I've never seen anyone replace that part. That code is usually caused by the cam position sensor.

Hi Ray, I was at a McDonald's drive thru and I was at the first window and paid. As I was driving to the pickup window my 2010 fx35 engine turned off no codes. Just happened today

I'd have put those dowel pins into the block, not the new cover. Makes reassembly easier.

Yes. CV axle job. And stupid question. Is there a mechanic trick to getting an 05 Tahoe with the 5.3 to stop burping and just let me fill it with gas? I really hate waiting 20 minutes to fill this thing

Sounds like the vent line is kinked or plugged somehow.

I had the 03 version and I had to replace the filler neck, cap and have the pump re seated. Some sort of air leak messed up the pressure/venting but did not throw codes.
