Thank you Stephen. Not sure I understand the concept of the racket vertical downward velocity component not being zero at some stage during the backswing. Your useful tip works, I think, because the downward kinetic energy gets stored more efficiently into elastic energy in the shoulder/arm/wrist when initiating the upswing
