It is still going on. There are music machines and there musicians and singers. Usually not in the same place. Fab Morvan could actually sing. Another group by the same producer. Boney M. Bobby Farell was the lip sync, the rest actually could sing. I guess in Europe it was a given that staged show, were lip sync, so the sing part did not mess up the show part.

I was Born in Toronto Canada in 1981. I was 10 years old when my Parents back then decided to leave and come to Greece.

Frank Farian (can't remember his name right now) knew that looks sell records. The real people somgomg these songs would've never reached MV success because they don't have the look.
MV is a very interesting case study in that regard. Boy Bands are another one. Lou Pearlman proved that with Backstreet Boys and N'Sync.

Most notably C+C Music Factory and Black Box. Gonna Make Sweat, Everybody Dance Now, Strike It Up and many others.
However back then in the dance music scene there was no place for a plus size woman in the world of hard bodies and mini skirts. So models were brought in for the music video shoots.
It's funny how nowadays plus size women like Lizzo are celebrated.
