How Exercise REALLY Relieves Pain

  • For years I thought that I was strengthening muscles, realigning body structures, and mechanically fixing the physical body by providing hands-on treatment and exercises to people with back, butt, and sciatica pain as a physical therapist. But the longer I practice, the less convinced I’ve become. In fact, I now view motion as a means to reduce fear and the perceived danger to a nervous system that is sensitive- NOT as a means to fix the physical body.
Now, I’m not saying that exercise doesn’t cause the body to change- because it does...
But I am suggesting that the benefits of movement go far beyond the physical physiological impact and can be a great way to calm a sensitive nervous system (Movement-Pain-Fear negative feedback loop).

Another way of saying make movement your practice. Have you heard of Natalie Goldberg? A writer trying to meditate was told by her Guru" since youre having problems with meditation, why not make writing your practice instead?
Life activities require practice of dome sort. Insted of focusing on the activity itself, just show up and practice. Moving is the foundation of life. So make movement your practice. Thank you for helping me see this connection. 😊

Motion is lotion! Just knowing motion will help, helps my mind which helps my back as I move through a "pain attack". Telling myself that it will pass as I make motion a priority. Good stuff here

So glad I found your channel. This is exactly what I needed to hear today. So far everybody's wanted to do ongoing Chiropractic adjustments, injections into my hips. I've avoided all of those things and then exercising more and it's great to hear that I'm on the right track. I love your attitude and thoughts on this.

That was really helpful, thank you! I definitely have been sedantary because I associate exercise with pain. I never considered how that sense of threat would impact me long-term, or that there is potential to change the narrative and maybe even find some kind of movement that I could enjoy and feel safe doing often. Thanks for sharing that idea; it's so encouraging!

Hi Charlie...quick question, i developed a lateral shift and back / glute pain 8 or so months ago, which i now know is a disc herniation L4L5. Anyway i stupidly tried to fix it which worked, but unfortunately the sciatica got way worse.
Then a couple of months after the shift came back anyway, and i just left it. In the last 6 weeks my shift has almost corrected naturally, my physio says i look taller too.
However, the sciatica is still there although it feels like it has improved I'm in a bit of flare. It has been about 8 months, is my body correcting the shift a good sign? I still have the nerve pain, will it just take more time to go away due to being irritated for so long?
    Your advice is much appreciated!

Hey Ricky! Many shifts do naturally correct- which sounds like it did for you. 8 months without reduction in nerve pain is a while... most sciatica resolves with the right approach within 6-9 months (or sooner). Now, in all fairlness, sounds like you didn't take the right approach early on... which may have impacted this timeline- AND now sounds like you're taking no approach (wait and see?)
      Can you confirm this?

Hi Charlie - the pain definitely is less than it was a few months ago, and I can move more freely. I'm trying to avoid movements that hurt (mainly extension) and do things which feel ok, like chin ups and cycle machine.
Progress is quite slow, but I guess today I am exactly 6 months on from when I really injured it doing bird dogs...I've definitely improved pain wise but have more to go!
      Really appreciate your time:-)
