Seventeenth Century Art in Northern Europe: Rubens' Late Years
The focus of this class is to examine the Flemish and Dutch visual culture of the seventeenth century, to study major monuments and artists, such as Rubens, Rembrandt, and Vermeer, as well as the development of still life, genre, and landscape painting. In addition, the course will also look at collaboration in painting, the tradition of collecting in Flanders and The Netherlands, cabinet paintings, paintings by women artists, and the multicultural aspects of art production. As often requested by Studio Art students, it will also investigate some of technical aspects of Rubens and Rembrandt (support preparation, pigments, painting method).
