- In the last episode of the 1939 Forgotten Hot Rod, Matt got the engine installed into the freshly redone chassis, but we forgot to swap the oil pans! the stock Thunderbird engine does not clear the cross member and the engine is sitting way to high. So today Matt is going to take a step backwards to hopefully move forward. By the end of this episode we hope to hear the $500 Y-Block roar to life! Hi Matt a couple of comments if I may. You probably don't need the side stabilisers. They are for when the motor is mounted on the center at the front and rear like in the T-Bird. With the wide spaced front mounts and the somewhat wider rear mounts, in my opinion extra side mounts will not be needed. When it was torque rocking as you blipped it the whole frame was rocking, not the motor on it's own. The other thing, is the T-Bird has a spacer behind the water pump. If you can't handle the extra length and want to remove the spacer you will need the matching pulleys and generator brackets off the old motor. just something to look out for.

Hey Mart, I sorta thought that too. Since the motor is mounted differently it probably doesn't need those extra stabilizers, but was second guessing myself. I think I'll wait to get the car further along as I can always add them even after the car is back together. The water pump thing I also was wondering about, I had it all apart to install the front engine mount bracket and remove the power steering stuff. Thanks for the tips! -Matt/ITG

In the original side valve Ford trim, the forward thrust of the rear axle was transmitted through the torque tube, to the transmission & the engine, There were two rods that were bolted through the engine bell housing facing to the rear & attached directly to the chassis. These were actually in tension & perform two functions. As the engine was pushed forward in its rubber mounts these rods actually 'pulled; the chassis along with the engine. More importantly they kept the engine in its place, fore & aft. Since the clutch arm is actuated by a horizontal push rod any forward or rearward movement of the engine in its mounts, however small.
With the rods in place the clutch mechanism could work smoothly avoiding the jerky motion caused by the clutch arm moving back & forward as the engine was pushed forward by the axle, torque tube etc. I have seen some pretty nasty clutch shudder as a result of these rods being left out.
What is your plan to address this issue with the Y block engine.

I was wondering if it would have been easier to notch the frame. but looking at it you would have cut into where the front spring mounts.

I would have fixed the oil pan clearance problem with a sledge hammer back in the old days! We didn't have many tools and had to make do with whatever was there. The old Y-block seems to be running smooth. I would love to take the 39 for a spin when it's done.
Thanks Ray, we're hoping to do this car some justice as it's previous version was smashed, cut and a little less refined. It will remain some of it's bumps and bruises but the work I do I'd like to be of a slightly higher standard than when it was originally done. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG

Matt, I see where you responded to one guy you're thinking of running straight pipes. ...please don't. There's nothing sweeter sounding, than a Y-block with glasspacs. Straight pipes are raspy, narly and just plain noisy.
Matt, I agree with this comment. Trust me on this...Y-Blocks do have their own unique "sewing machine sound". Skip Smithy's...go with a set of Walker Continental glasspacks! Ot better yet, an old NOS set of steelpacks. I used the Allen's exhaust Corvette "offroad" mufflers on my 59 Corvette which are accurate replicas of the old GM, dealer supplied steelpack muffers and sound really sweet. Problem with those is, they are only 1.75" in and out. If you can work with that, they are plentiful, relatively inexpensive and last like forever. Thanks for the great viewing and hard work!

Hi Robbie, I think it rocked just because the frame has no weight to it and the torque of the engine is a lot for the few hundred pounds of frame and accessories it's bolted to. Yea he's excited to get back on his, he's just scraping together the cash for a front spring and a trans bell housing and we can make big progress on his project! -Matt/ITG

Yea I am super tempted to swap in a thumper cam! I got a 3x2 intake for the engine at Hershey and I have some fresh 97's on the shelf for it already! We're on the same wavelength haha.
Switch the exhaust manifolds side to side , works every time .
Don't forget to install the the two engine to chassis tie rods .If not it will dance all over the place when you try and reverse, especially backing up an incline. Sweet running Y block too. It may not have done too much work after the donor car was restored .All you need now is a paxton blower ...😎
For the yblocks you can get all the hippo parts from John Mummert. He specializes in yblocks. Just Google John Mummert yblocks.

What did you do with the original engine that came in the 39? Is it able to be used again or is to far gone. I remember you like the carburetor on the old engine

Always encouraging to hear the engine run. The transverse springs give it a healthy rock and so when you pull up to the drive in, caps on the root beer or wet britches. Course it will change a lot when the weight of the car is added... good job

No matter how many times I have done it, firing up an engine for the first time is about as good as it gets. Especially when it's in a vehicle that was once given up on. You most likely know this, but the Chevy style "Ram's horn" exhaust manifolds are found on larger Ford truck with Y-blocks in them. Do you have the correct air cleaner for the percolator Holley?

Great luck on that engine!! Sounds like it runs well. You can ditch tha belt fan and replace it with a spal electric unit. Still waiting to see the firewall fixit video, there's where the real work will be!
I try and keep the builds I do "traditional" using all "old" parts, so modern things like electric fans and power steering, etc won't be used. I like the challenge of making it all look and work like they did "back in the day". I can't wait to get that firewall all tuned up too, but that's after the floor pan project! Congrats on getting the engine in the ‘39 and running. It was great to meet you at Hershey and thanks for pushing us to get there. It’s been a long time desire of mine and for my first Hershey Fall Meet it was fantastic. I found a few treasures to bring home and will be back next year.
