  • Every April 25, Portugal commemorates the Carnation Revolution which overthrew a fascist dictatorship in 1974. The day begins with vendors selling carnations. In the morning there’s a military parade, seen in this video: • Lisbon: Military Parad... . Then, in the afternoon comes the People’s Parade. It starts out like the world’s largest “passeggiata,” as thousands stroll up and down the Avenida da Liberdade. There’s a kind of alternative celebration in Rossio Square. Then the event becomes a little more formal as civil groups, activist groups and Portugal’s many political parties march down the avenue promoting their causes. The whole parade is broadcast live on Portuguese public television.
