As for the frozen roach, this particular creepy idea ain't mine, I'm afraid. Our physics prof did the "live cockroach into liquid nitrogen" experiment back in the eighties, and he'd probably been shown it himself in the forties.
As far as I can tell, the trick has been around since people have been able to liquefy gases. Spoiler alert: Cockroaches are seriously hardy little creatures.
