    Hey I would appreciate SO much if you could get back to me!
    I want to be a game designer/artist in Japan. Whether I should go to an Art University or a vocational school (in Japan) is my current dilemma. I'm 21 and have not been to college yet. If you have the time I was hoping you could offer your advice!
    How important would you say is your educational background for getting a job as an artist in a game company there?
    I know you have a bachelor's degree in art back in the US, how has that affected you when applying for jobs here/getting a visa?
    Do you think immigration would be wary of granting me a work visa if I only attend a 2 year senmongakkou and not a university?
    Attending Senmongakkou would be much less stressful for me because my family will not be sending me money and so I will be completely supporting myself. Thus it would be a weight off my shoulders to only have two years of schooling, also the whole process of applying and attending is easier, etc.
    However I've heard not having a bachelor's degree is a gamble in terms of getting a work visa, and that vocational schools in general are much less respected in society. So I definitely don't want to screw up my future prospects and possibly not be able to live in Japan anymore!
    There is so much conflicting information online and you are the only person I've found who's in the exact situation I want to be in! So your advice would be SO much appreciated!! Thank you!

      I've been getting quite a few questions about this, so I think I'm going to go ahead and respond in a video.
      Should have it up some time this week. Saturday at the latest.

      How did it go with you in the end? I’m 25 and in my third year of university doing game art at bachelors level and would really like to do a fourth year abroad preferably in Japan if not for just half a year or perhaps work placement for half a year connected to my university. After that who knows, but it would be truly a dream come true.

    Glad to hear you got a new job, congrats! I assume you're planning to do so, but let us know in the new future how the job's going, what it's like working just as a game artist, what kinds of stuff they're having you draw (without showing us, of course, NDAs being a thing), and what you're working on outside of work.

    Really informative, especially the agent portion. I'm planning on applying as an entry level programmer in the gaming industry as soon as my japanese language course completes I've also just graduated from university in computer science, can you give me any suggestions? Because at the moment I only have self taught experience on unreal engine and not really any proper work experience.

    • @okamichamploo
      @okamichamploo  Рік тому +1

      Your probably in a real good position. I just recently did some job hunting and nowadays you can find agents on LinkedIn who are looking specifically for new programmers, and your lack of work experience is probably a plus, because the recruitment standards are generally more open to fresh graduates than say, someone like me, with years of work experience as an artist, but NOT as a programmer.
      Also unreal is all the rage right now. If you've made a game in Unreal be sure to include that as well.

    • @samuelleie
      @samuelleie 3 місяці тому

      @@okamichamploo would you say this "recruitment standards being generally more open to fresh graduates" apply to a Game Designer/Planner as well? I'm doing a game dev course in the university and will graduate in the end of 2025 or middle of 2026. I'm already learning japanese (started in the beginning of this year) and wound like to start searching for jobs as soon as I graduate. Also would be better if I just try to get a job being outside Japan as soon as I can, or would you say that would be better if I go to Japan with a student visa for learning japanese and after this I searches for jobs already being in Japan?

    One question I have is- do Japanese game companies do art tests with applicants? Could I suggest to them that I would like to do one in the application somehow, or is it a complete foreign concept to Japan and I shouldn't even mention it? Thanks!

    • @vincewedde8145
      @vincewedde8145 5 років тому +4

      Last year I had an interview at Square Enix JP group and they have not asked for an art test after the interview, but I should showcase something in a different style. So like an example of something different because my art style I had in my portfolio was not matching the companies, so they wanted to see if I can match the quality of their art style.

    • @okamichamploo
      @okamichamploo  5 років тому +4

      I'm not completely sure what an art test entails, but like Vince said, it's usually not part of the interview process. Usually they just look at your portfolio and decide off that. If they are very interested in you, but just don't feel like your portfolio is a match they may ask you to do some additional work though.
      There was one time, however, where I had what I would consider an art test. And that was at an interview with Konami. They gave us a theme, and a piece of paper, and told us to draw something in about an hour.
      In my many interviews that was the only time that happened though.
      Oh and Konami had a strange written test as well, where they asked you crazy math problems and stuff. Felt pretty odd for an art position.

    Could I ask you what the base salary for a game developer in japan is? What was the amount that you originally wanted to ask for? Coming from a game development position in the states I reallllly want to live in Japan but I'm worried about a significant salary cut. Thanks for the helpful content by the way [:

      If I ever have time again I want to make a more detailed vid about this, but in short I’d say yearly salaries run from about 2,000,000 yen on the low entry level jobs to about 4,000,000 to 5,000,000 for a good position with experience.

      That being said, the job itself my still want you to speak Japanese.

      颜小超 I’m really bad at keeping track of dates (just ask my wife), but I’ve been in the game industry at least 4 or 5 years.
      The pay, I’ll be honest, it’s not that great. I get paid less now as a Game Dec than I got as an English teacher when I first got here.
      It depends on your position, but the annual salary is usually starts around 2,000,000 yen to 3,500,000 yen, going up to 4 or 5 million if you switch jobs with experience.

      Yeah, but I thinkt that in Japanese they seem to use it as "self promotion/ trying to appeal"; for example in variety shows PR time means that guest has few seconds to "sell" his music album, movie or whatever to viewers.

      J P I imagine any experience will be good. Especially if you have a portfolio of your work. A lot of times the portfolio actually holds more weight than your specific work history.
      After that, I’d just say make sure you know the language well enough to overcome any perceived cultural barriers

      Jayakumar Nagaraj hard to say. It’s not as common here, but there are places that use Houdini and so you would have very little competition if you could find a company looking for it
