Great reaction. Martinmetal has already explained the circumstances and how they found themselves on the main stage at their very first metal festival outside of Asia and their very first performance in the UK.
They were unknown then, aged 16, 15 and 15 (Moa's birthday was only the day before), spoke hardly a word of English .... and with just 5 songs (this was the last) they completely won over 50-60,000 UK metalheads.
They had the biggest mosh pits of the weekend and their t-shirts and merch outsold every other band playing that weekend (including some very big names like Anthrax, Slayer, Iron Maiden and Metallica).
This was the moment they kicked open the doors for other Japanese bands brave enough to follow them in touring the world.
It was after this and their first headline show in London a couple of days later that they started calling the UK their second home.
Well spotted with Yui's torn skirt. It caught on her studded bracelet ... and she carried on like the true professional she, Su and Moa all are, not missing a beat, untangling her new fox tail as she danced and making it look, as you said, almost as if it was just part of her costume and the show.
Oh yes, the lyrics for this song are definitely worth looking into.

There are two guitarists harmonizing in this one, which is pretty common for BABYMETAL songs. Mikio Fujioka (who has since passed, RIP) is the main guitarist you see here. He was a master of his instrument and has a very recognizable style.

The dresses the Kami Band are wearing are burial robes. They are spirits sent by the Fox God to aid the girls in their quest to unite the world in Metal. Hence the face paint to give them that ghost-like appearance (I guess). I think it's also a way to increase the clashing of the kawaii and the Metal elements, represented by the girls and the band.
I also think Japanese girls saying "bye bye" is the cutest sound ever.

This might be their best live performance There was no lasers, or video screens, or pyro, and no elaborate stage design Just them(BabyMetal and The Kami Band) doing what they do at an extremely high level The crowd was great as well, especially since this wasn't in Japan Amazing performance 👏👏

This was the final song of their first appearance at a Western metal festival and also happened to be the largest crowd they had ever been in front of at this point. There are photos of the girls before going on stage and they look terrified. UK Metal crowds are notoriously unforgiving when it comes to bands they don't like, throwing bottles and the like onto the stage. There was significant concern something like this would happen to Babymetal. They originally were to perform at a smaller stage but due to interest, they were moved to the main stage. Su, Moa, and Yui had no clue how many people would be there.... it was an early in the day performance which is not usually packed... and it was this unknown "Gimmick band" from Japan. As I said, the photos of the girls just before walking onto the stage shows them terrified. Terrified there would be no one there. Terrified they would not be liked. Yet they walked onto the stage, looked out over a sea of 60,000 British Metalheads, and absolutely dominated. By the time they left the stage, the audience was chanting for more. They stole that whole weekend. They had the largest Walls of Deaths and pits of the entire festival, becoming the talk of the festival. This was the performance that first started to make Babymetal credible to Western fans. The Kami band painted their faces white because they are "Spirts" summoned by the Fox God to be Babymetal's backing band. That's not Mikio, Boh, Ohmura, and Leda, it's only their bodies that the "Spirits of Metal" have possessed. :) The gods of guitar, bass, and drums. :)

It's not often you see the moment when someone became a star, here it is caught on video. I'm sure others have covered all the challenges of this performance, but this is what made them international stars. No one in the audience, well maybe a couple thousand fans out of 60,000, knew them, and Su said she could se their acceptance moving like a wave through the crowd from the stage, as people connected and started moving. Metal reporters at the time reported how the crowd was smiling - which never happened at a metal concert. This is when Su knew what she was doing worked.
They had played two very smal shows previously in Europe, this was their debut on the World Stage.
The Kami where the white face paint and white robes because of Kabuki theater, a traditional art form in Japan. Kami means god or spirit, lkike many words it's not a one for one translation. Anyway, in kabuki, kami are represented like this. Also, Babybones, the skeletons. In Kabuki, stage hands move props during the play and they are on stage wearing black skinsuits. Babymetal took some of those Kabuki skinsuits and painted bones on them.
There was an historical woman named Okuni who invented Kabuki. She wore a cross around her neck. When you see a pop singer with a cross, it's a shoutout to Okuni.

Got a mental picture of you at a BabyMetal show saying look at all this space to dance in as the "Wall of Death " comes towards you 🤣This apprence at Sonisphere in 2014 in the UK was there first Metal festival outside Asia . 95% of this crowd did not know who they where . After a campaign by fans called BabyMetal for Sonisphere the Organisers who prided thereselves on promoting up and coming band's invited them to perform. Originally they where due to play on small side stage , but Gimme Chocolate went Viral on UA-cam and after a lot of interest shown it was announced a couple of months before they would play Main Stage. On line a lot of Metal Elitist showed the anger declaring them a gimmick and said this is not Metal they should not perform here . Some even threatening to Boo them and through bottles of urine at them . The fans at this festival where notorious for showing disapproval at Bands they where not happy with . With there time slot being early in the day it was thought most of the festival attendees would be sleeping hangovers from night before off .
Maybe they might get a 1.000 to 2.000 watching them ,but the festival goers had got up early and got good places to watch Iron Maiden and Slayer who where to peform later and around 50.000 to 60.000 thousand where waiting .
The girls where worried no one would turn up to watch them .
They looked out of gap and could see no-one. Someone said no this way and there is a famous picture of them looking a bit worried when they seen the crowd first time . They where only Su 16 and Yui and Moa 15 and they new about this crowds reputation and the threats . They had 5 songs to perform to win them over . This was there last song . Su had them singing along to Gimme Chocolate and you could hear the roar of the crowd during the song and shouts of "we want more and one more song at the end " This performance was a very important apprence in BabyMetals story Su said it made them feel accepted by Metal Fans .
Fans call this apprence as " The Miracle of Sonisphere " i often tear up watching this with happiness at what they achieved here and being proud of them . ❤ ❤❤🤘🦊🤘

You are one of the few reactors who noticed the piece of fabric that got stuck on Yui's glove. It was part of her skirt. She removed it from her glove with her left hand several times during the song with only minor deviations from the choreography. You have to be familiar with the choreography to notice the differences. This tells a lot about Yui's level of professionalism at the age of 15 years and 15 days.

Well; shoot! How does anyone react to such a historical performance? Keep reading the comment. We, “rebels,” across the pond have a shared history, (good and bad). After all we’ve been through, I knew there was still something that joined us together. I would praise my ancestors from there, but the credit goes to you, the current UK fans! Yes, I understand the UK is more than the isles (trust me on that). Still, I have nothing, but praise for y’all to vault BM (at the time) on to the global stage. It is no wonder why they call the UK their second home! Is it envy? Probably is, but more of appreciation. I most likely would have never heard of BM, or subsequent groups Japanese groups without you UK fans.
I’m positive you will be inundated by comments, but there is zero way I can pass this opportunity by. There are many songs that I relate too as an older gentleman (or just old). No Rain No Rainbow really hits hard for me personally. This is probably, the second most impactful performance simply by the lyrics, let alone the history and everything else. As one ages we tend to look back on our mistakes and hope our children can be better than us. Well a song about the evils of, “bullying,” just epitomizes my thoughts.
Such an outstanding song, and performance. Thank you to those across the pond; or north of my boarder (and south Belize), for bringing these women into my life. Arigato Gozaimasu
PS- My apologizes for not recognizing the help and respect by the Japanese One for their assistance and eduction. Always indebted to you.

In regards to the energy and stamina of Babymetal: first, none of these girls (at the time of this video) are above the age of 16 - that age when you have the energy of a nuclear power plant. Second, unlike many other metal bands, these ladies aren't wrung out on drugs and/or alcohol so naturally they just keep going and going and going. Third, if you understand the Japanese ethos, giving something your all is how they do things (unlike most of us lazy-ass Americans). However, I have heard that many times after their concerts, Su, Moa, And Yui would literally drop after leaving the stage with roadies putting ice packs on them.
Also, you didn't finish the video - they may have finished singing but they weren't completely finished. 😥

    • @BadEnd98
      @BadEnd98 Рік тому +6

Well even later they still have that energy, only that since Metal Galaxy era they don't look as much energetic but I think because they refined their choreo and their stamina got even better that make it look effortless. Look at RoR in Glastonbury you can definitely see how the new Avenger at that time - Riho, who haven't familiar with the BM performance level yet, hardly hold up with Su & Moa - they didn't even break a sweat in that under 1hrs setlist!

Since the lyrics of this song are IMHO really important, let me provide you a translation:
*IJIME, DAME, ZETTAI* (Bullying, No, Absolutely)
    [Rururu...]
    [Ah.]
Dreaming, I couldn't have even it.
Between the light and the darkness, I stayed alone.
Those who got hurt were not only I myself,
but also those who kept on watching me. It was you.
    Confidence, [Have it!]
    I couldn't have. [Don't be beaten!]
I kept on hiding [I dislike to be found!]
    until yesterday. [Yesterday is gone!]
But good-bye to yesterdays' myself. [Bye-bye!]
    Bullying. [No!] Bullying. [No!]
It's disgraceful. [No! No! No! No!]
Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone,
and we all get badly hurt.
    Fox, [Fly!] Fox, [Fly!]
I'm sure you can fly. [Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly!]
Let your pain and sadness all go outside!
It's OK because I'll protect you.
I didn't show my tears, and in the night I was about to cry,
in a room deep inside my heart, I stayed alone.
Those who hurt me were not only someone else,
but also those who pretended not to notice. It was my friend.
    Nothing [Nothing!]
    could I say. [Say nothing!?]
I was about to give up [No easy throwing out!]
    until yesterday. [Yesterday is gone!]
But good-bye to yesterdays' myself. [Bye-bye!]
    Bullying. [No!] Bullying. [No!]
It's disgraceful. [No! No! No! No!]
Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone,
and we all get badly hurt.
    Fox, [Fly!] Fox, [Fly!]
I'm sure you can fly. [Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly!]
Let your pain and sadness all go outside!
It's OK because I'll protect you.
    Pain...
    Aching...
    All the while...
    Alone...
    Your heart...
    Pretending not to notice...
    Anymore...
    I'll never get away.
    Bullying, No, Absolutely.
Full of dearest-ness, it's pressuring but also encouraging.
    Anymore, anymore your...
I don't want to see anymore your tearful face.
    Bullying. [No!] Bullying. [No!]
It's disgraceful. [No! No! No! No!]
Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone,
and we all get badly hurt.
    Fox, [Fly!] Fox, [Fly!]
    I'm sure you can fly.
Let your pain and sadness all go outside!
It's OK because I'll protect you.
Bullying, No, absolutely. [No! No! No! No!]
    Bullying, No, forever.
Bullying, No, absolutely. [No! No! No! No!]
    Bullying, No, never.

    Translation by DU-METAL
P.S.: I looking forward to your artwork :)

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 🚫
The song title translates as "Bullying, No, Forever", although "Zettai" can also mean "absolutely".
They were bumped up to a main stage once their music video for 'Gimme Chocolate!!' started to go viral outside of Japan.
That was a couple of months before this Sonisphere appearance.
My favorite part of 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' is still the part where Su threatens to kick Yui and Moa in the head if they don't stop bullying each other.
And this anti-bullying song gets some of the biggest mosh pits. : )
I can't imagine the strength of nerve it took for a 16 year old Su, and just turned 15 year olds Yui and Moa to take that stage.
And to leave them wanting more. I'd say they made some new fans that day.
They followed this up with a headlining concert at The Forum in London two days later.
This was a classic Kami Band line-up with Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus on guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.

You stopped the song too early. When it comes to Babymetal do not assume the performance is over just because the song itself is over. :)
Right after you were talking about Yui's skirt being caught up you could see her discretely pull it off her arm without missing a step in her choreography. They NEVER get distracted from their choreography. There was a concert where a jacket of some kind was thrown on stage and landed on top of Moa. She deflected it away expertly as though it was all part of the dancing. It was a thing of beauty.
I always laugh, especially in this performance, where Su's voice gets screechy in the "We Are!!!" part at the end. She has such a beautiful controlled voice throughout the song but once its over, she screeches like a little girl. That is the difference between Su and Suzuka.

    Pain…
    Aching…
    All the while…
    Alone…
    Your heart…
    Pretending not to notice…
    Anymore…
    I’ll never get away
    Bullying, No, Absolutely
    Full of dearest-ness
    it’s pressuring
    but also encouraging
    Anymore…

    Great reaction, thanks!
I'm impressed, and I'm not often impressed by a reaction. You got all the interesting points of the whole performance: Yui controlling her torn tutu without missing a beat, that key change near the end, Su-metal being... well... Su-metal, etc. etc. It would be perfect if you watched it until the end... I'm sorry, I'm picky 😁
Fun fact: during the performance of "IDZ" from the concert New Year Fox Festival 2015, Yui did a flying kick over Moa (not joking).
And I cannot blame you for having this as your new favorite. It's on my top favorite list as well (okay, that was easy, huge power metal fan here).

You stopped the video too early. You missed the crowd chanting "We want more" and then their adorable "See You!" as they walk off the stage.
These girls are so professional at such a young age. Yui having the wardrobe malfunction and not letting it bother her choreography and then having the presence of mind to wait until the choreography allows her to address it.

One of the first world tours they had a short audio interview question (which I've never found again sadly, it was part of a UA-cam video) from I think recorded at Heavy Montréal in 2014.
The question was how they prepare (they asked multiple bands the same question, which was what the video was about), Babymetal said: we always practice our music/choreography by doing full setlists. And 2 weeks before going on tour they do extra cardio training. I believe that '2 weeks cardio' has now been replaced by the core training she mentioned.

They take advantage of the fact that they are small. The smaller the size and weight, the easier it is to move. An adult and heavy person, even a well-trained one, is unlikely to be able to move at the same pace. In addition, these girls are well trained, and in addition to concerts, they work out in the hall to be in good shape. Suzuka even moves a little less, but she sings without any problems after the dance moves.

  • @autohmae
    @autohmae Рік тому +2

Great reaction, this is a song high on fan favorite lists if I'm not mistaken. Many fans also just call the song by it's abbreviation: IDZ. As others have mentioned it's an anti-bullying song, which is why they had the kicks in their dances and moment with the thumbs, basically making a pact to stop bullying from happening again.
How they have so much energy for this song ? They had a little introduction video running for this song while they take a short few minutes break for this last song, captured on some people's phone during the brake the make up lady who tours with Babymetal was putting Yuimetal's bangs back into place and waving some air towards her to recover faster. Sadly only moments later her dress got ripped by the sharper part of her glove.
What you see here is the chaos metal fans make more often, not just at Babymetal gigs, the wall of death (which is running towards each other), moshpit (bumbing into each other) and the less chaotic circlepit (basically running around). Babymetal creates a connection between many types of fan interactions from Japanese traditions to metal traditions, etc. The way the music is made and the performance triggers the audience (also the video helped in this case) to do these things.

    • @autohmae
      @autohmae Рік тому +1

I should maybe add: Babymetal was born out of the j-pop training group: Sakura Gakuin.
Every year they add new members and some members leave, based on their age.
Babymetal is a sub-group (called sub-unit) of Sakura Gakuin. SG is school themes, so they are school clubs: cooking club, newspaper club, etc. But also: heavy music club aka Babymetal. At times they do: shuffle units, which is when members of SG perform a song of one of their own clubs. The last time a Babymetal shuffle unit was performed Gimme Choco was chosen, the energy in the Babymetal song was high enough that after the SG girls tried to perform the song the first time they were out of energy, this shows how much stamina Babymetal has, the other SG girls have done full shows before. Babymetal has said their hardest performance was their first own show (small venue with metal history, but packed with 200 or so people). Their stamina wasn't as great. And it was very hot, less oxygen. All other shows after were all easier. It was 4 songs plus 2 encore songs.

They got a lot of hate online prior to show, because they were seen as a gimmick, people even threaten to throw bottles at them. But these 3 girls got on that stage despite the hate (showing they had more balls than the haters), put on a hell of a performance, and won over a huge crowd of metal heads. You can hear them chanting "We want more" at the end.

Babymetal is cooler, they are cooler than a lot of other bands, because of the music and performance is created to take maximum advantage of their talents of the girls and the guys and the crowd interaction. And always trying to get the audience involved and succeeding. Their big shows and still being able to deliver the same quality on an empty boring stage. And an other very important thing: those on stage are having fun and are always trying to deliver a better performance than their last.

The band is dressed as Japanese spirits. I think the BBC has rights to this, so it won't get blocked, they usually dont care much. Oh, yeah, the dancer Moa blew out her knee one show doing the run and did the rest of the song almost crying and in obvious agony. We love our Moa.

Yes indeed, you could literally measure their success by the distance they run at the beginning of IDZ! : First show in 2012 it was so small they've to go around twice and run in place, in 2016 at the Tokyo Dome YUI and MOA has to really run through the huge stage to reach SU on time 😅

I think if you liked this song Venice, then you're going to be blown away when you hear Shine. Loving your reactions, always looking forward to watching your next ones! As for your comment about Yui becoming burnt out, that is an interesting theory. One I had never thought of before. Perhaps you're onto something. My theory was that she became afflicted with the same illness her family member was afflicted with years before. While Yui was in school, she was very depressed because somebody in her family (Japanese are VERY private about these sorts of things, so you rarely find out what happened and with who), was very ill and was hospitalized. Also, from what I understand, children within a certain age range are not permitted to see their family members when they are in the hospital. So Yui had to still attend school not knowing how her family member was doing. She was very, very depressed during this time, and it was this depression that lead her to discovering Su's original music group, the Karen Girls. Yui was introduced to them by somebody (I think a teacher, I can't remember right now), and she fell in love with them and started learning all the dance moves and the songs and all that. It became a dream of hers to perform one of their songs with them. That dream later came true. At some point you may be pointed into the direction of reacting to that song. Anyhow, it was always my theory she may have gotten the same illness as her family member had and that was why she had to drop out. But in the end, only the Fox god knows.

Another great reaction! I haven't read the comments, so maybe someone already answered this, but the white face paint on the Kamis (and the white robes, and the very name 'Kami band') is because of some of their old lore where they were 'metal spirits' (the Japanese word for spirit or god is 'kami') sent to earth to support Babymetal in their fight against the evil idols, blah blah blah, Jpop idol music bad, nevermind that we're also idols 😂 Anyway, because they were _spirits_ they had to possess bodies, and they of course possessed dead ones because that's more metal or something. The white robes and face paint are traditional Japanese burial attire. And there you have it!
I believe you have yet to see Rondo of Nightmare. The Budokan Black Night performance builds off this lore by having the Kamis "summon" Su from the endless nightmare she was trapped in by the evil idols so that she could free Yui and Moa from mind-control. Or something along those lines - the lore has never been _super_ clearly explained, so you have to kinda read between the lines.

Another impressive detail of this performance is that they were actually supposed to play on a side stage in front of 3000 to 5000 people. However, due to the online hype that arose in advance, they were moved to the main stage, and so it became 30,000 people. The girls were quite nervous, as it was not only their first gig outside Asia, but also the biggest crowd they had played in front of up to that point. And on top of that, a festival audience, which is often known to show if it doesn't like something.
Well, the hype seems justified and continued even after the festival. They were the talk of the whole event. 🤘🏻
