    Most budget airlines allows only one free personal item, not two. They don’t even offer any free carry ons, so don’t even think about 2 personal items. Every piece of luggage is charged. Absolutely no freebies. That’s how they nickel and dime you till they can break even with the regular airlines.

    • @bobcat2960
      @bobcat2960 2 місяці тому +4

      It's not nickel and diming you, Nancy, it's common sense - they need to add money for more room/weight you take/add, more bags more $. Only simple intelligence required.

    AirAsia allows 1 carry‐on and 1 personal item, but the total of both should be 7kg or less. And my bags have been weighed at the counter! Fortunately, for Airasia they allow you to prebook extra weight for carry‐on (extra 7kg for a total of 14kg). That is the main reason why I keep flying with them. If you end up with Cebu Pacific, they are very strict about allowing only 1 piece if cabin baggage. Other Asian airlines I've flown with usually allow 2 pieces, but should be under 7kg total. Personally, I just carry everything on my person. I got a jacket with loads of pockets that can fit most of my tech (which make up the bulk of the weight of my items anyway). No more carry‐on issues.

      Good info! Which brand of jacket? Are you not hot in it while traveling SE Asia?

    • @adabadada
      @adabadada 2 місяці тому +1

      @@dennisrose40 I use the Pacsafe Transit Jacket but I think it has been discontinued. I'm thinking of getting a fishing/camera vest eventually when I need a replacement. I really just use it to get past whoever is weighing stuff then I take it off (unless I'm extra paranoid about losing my things). My carry‐on is usually an oversized tote bag so I can just stuff the jacket in there when I'm through security. Simple thing to put it on again if they happen to be strict at the gate. If I get cold on the plane, I can opt to remove the contents and keep them in the bag while I just wear the jacket.

      @@adabadadavery helpful info, thanks! I’m looking at ScotteVest choices now. I never heard of them before today. For tote bag I have a cheap Walmart bag that carries a lot but stores away as a 5” x 13” x 13” zipped up bag. It’s expandable to 35 liters (I am guessing). I have to carry a cpap machine bag 5” x 10” x 13” and wonder how much grief may be had trying to add that in while traveling in Asia.

      @@dennisrose40 Thanks for bringing ScotteVest to my attention. I'm gonna keep it mind when I need a new jacket. I'm sorry I don't have experience with CPAP machines. Definitely DON'T check it in though (especially if these things come with batteries). I had a friend who had trouble with a BP monitor because he tried to check it in. I've traveled with a red light therapy helmet and mask in my carry‐on and never had a problem. I think as long as it's clear what it is when you travel, you should not have trouble clearing security.
      Edit to add: Interesting choice on the Walmart bag. I carry a Kipling, which is both smaller and heavier, and of course more expensive. We don't have Walmart, but Ikea does have a ginormous tote too. I'll see if that's a good fit next time. Thanks!

    Each to their own, but this system would not be for me. I’m a 52 year old female and sometimes have problems with my shoulders. I don’t mind wearing a lightweight backpack with a small crossbody or belt bag, but having a 20 duffel on one shoulder as well as a backpack is just awkward and very uncomfortable.

      Hey, yeah I would have to agree. It does get tiring to hold that messenger bag plus the backpack while walking through airports or taking long trips.
      I’m always on the lookout for new bags that could complement a backpack but are not duffels or messengers precisely.
      Maybe hidden wheels somewhere? Who knows, but it would be a lifesaver (or shoulder saver I should say 😊)

    Incorrect - flying Air France out of Munich, Germany in 2023 ALL personal items, carry-ons, misc items (airport store items, neck pillows, jackets not worn), & luggage for all economy thru business class passengers we measured AND weighed. It was terrible for everyone that was over either way & the airline collected SO much money!!! Same thing for a 2024 Air Canada flight. Neither situation tagged us because we are always prepared for these types of shenanigans but watching it happen was eye-opening.

    So you’re basically taking 2 small bags: an overhead bag and an under the seat bag? I say “overhead” because I’ve flown 3 times this year and all seats were taken, so don’t assume you’ll be able to put your second bag under a vacant seat.

  • @Travelers4Good
    @Travelers4Good Місяць тому

    Simply renaming a carry-on is a BS hack. First, stating that each of those fit under a seat does not mean they both fit under your assigned seat space, so one will be going in the overhead (carry-on style), unless your lucky enough to have a vacant seat next to you. The only useful nugget of info in this video is that rarely do Asian budget airlines question backpack weight unless they are 45+ liters in appearance. We carry Osprey 55L & 45L travel packs and have been successful most times as carry-on.

    Try that bag configuration of double carry personal item bags to board the notorious VietJet in Vietnam 😅The last time I saw a digital nomad doing that in HCMC boarding gate, he was pleading to the ground crew not to charge a fee to the personal item bag because the airline policy is 1 personal item bag only not exceeding 7kg.

    It doesn't matter what you try to call it, one of those 2 bags is ALWAYS considered by the airline as a carry-on. You are NOT allowed 2 personal items, it's 1 carry-on and 1 personal item. NO airline policy shows 2 personal items. So again, it doesn't matter what you want to call it, you still have 1 carry-on and 1 personal item

    I take a wheeled underseat bag and a personal size backpack. I’ve always been able to get one in overhead and one under the seat. I like smaller underseat size carry on as it’s easier to hoist in the overhead and smallish backpack. I tend to carry too much if I have extra room!

    Doesn´t work in South America if you want to travel with a personal item bag (lowest fee). Airlines allow only one bag, not two or they´ll charge you with carry on fees. Also, your personal item bag should be as square corners as you can, to store more stuff.

    Wow, double personal item bag - maybe a genius born here! (or not) #1 weight super important for flight's fuel consumption, #2, Cheap bargain airline = unsafe(r) airline - imo - cheaper fare, cheap(er) maintenance and repairs, and less seat width, foot room, amenities like wifi, or usb port, or even say 'a working well-maintained engine,' by the bargain airline carrier most likely - so BIG NEWS - cheap airline=cheap safety - NOT FOR ME, no how, no way, bro!! They don't weigh your 'personal bag!' Thank you - I hope YOU are never on a flight I'm taking and now they start weighing all your bags carried or wrapped around your shoulder! Carry-on vs. checked bags, hmm, more sensible genius level learning here - you 'carry it on' versus checked bag put in freight container/area of plane. Einstein level knowledge displayed in this vlog.

    But don't you get a carry on plus a personal item bag. So would a 40L plus the 2nd bag is 10-15 liter? So not sure of the advantage?

    • @fernandoanselmi
      @fernandoanselmi  2 місяці тому +1

      I think the advantage for me is not so much on the weight you can carry but having peace of mind that whatever it is that you’re carrying will actually go with you despite whatever the airline restrictions throw at you.
      In my situation, I don’t have a plan B if an airline refuses to take my carry-on or says it’s overweight. So to me, it's more of a bulletproof way to take the minimum weight I can carry with both bags, no guessing.
      It usually comes to 10kg main backpack (main cabin baggage) and 5-7kg personal item.
      I haven’t had any airline actually check the weight because they both seem smaller and lighter than a usual carry-on plus backpack setup.

    • @fernandoanselmi
      @fernandoanselmi  3 місяці тому +2

      Hey! Yeah apart from the shape (wheels, etc), the biggest difference for airlines is that the personal item should fit under the airplane seat. I usually find the any 20-25 liter bag will fit, provided is not too long (because then you don’t have space for your feet). Thanks for your comment :)
