    Hi , I m 15 . Almost 16. Basically , I m a actor. I do this where I make myself suitable to the character. Play with emotion. Touch people hearts. Know the person feeling. And that's the best way to win the spectators hearts.

    wow I just made notes of what you were saying about adjectives in characters you identify with and point of view, real good advice and people who give such helpful advice for free are the winners truly. You have gorgeous eyes and a heart of an angel. Thank you. Time for my research. I am looking across some serious plays. Struggling. DOn't know any. But my P traits are, Psycopathic( on screen only) really funny comedic( real life also) and I use my eyes well for crying and other emotions etc( so if you can connect with plays which have similar characters or monologues .That'll save me so much time and I can focus on the living them out and engrossing them. Thanks again! I am happy to come across this video .Thank you Lord.

      Thanks :) I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel.
      Here are a couple plays you might like for a "psychopath" try 'Brilliant Traces' by Cindy Lou Johnson. Look at 'Hand to God' by Robert Askins for a great comedic role. And if you haven't ever read 'Angels in America' by Tony Kushner it's a gorgeous dramatic two part play. Hope you like these plays and find some good material!

      Hey you beautiful human being, My audition went pretty well in parc 55 cyril magnin street , san francisco on saturday morning 2/4/17. The call back results will be out today via email. Either of the three, every applicant, will receive who have auditioned in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. SF being the last, the senior faculty who auditioned us said, "I have two reasons to be connected to SF 1. I am from the Bay, and 2. It comes down to brutal honesty at this point cause we are really done here! with all the auditions." haha
      He said, "your resume, your headshot, this hotel, everything is a load of bull crap! what we want to see is YOU! and what you bring to the table" the other lady also said, " an actor's job is one of the hardest! ( couldn't agree more) You are taking a great load of risk, cause after 3 years you are out in the jungle again."
      so the emails are. 1. you are not selected for the callback weekend 2. you are on waiting list for the callback 3. you got selected for the callback.
      one of the above three, every applicant will receive at any cost. today! Let the Lord's will be done! My job was to entertain and impress the judges with my act. The result I leave to the Alpha-Omega.
      I must tell you ! YOU ARE THE MOST GORGEOUS HUMAN BEING BOTH INSIDE AND OUT ! AND IT IS BECAUSE OF YOUR ADVICE THAT I GOT TO EVEN GO AND PERFORM AT THE AUDITION. KEEP HELPING OTHERS LIKE THIS ! AND THE LORD WILL REALLY BLESS YOU ! YOU WILL SOAR VERY HIGH ONE DAY!
      AND IT WILL BE A PRIVILEGE IF I GET TO SEE YOU ONE DAY! Thank you Candace!

    Hi!
    I discovered your UA-cam channel just now and I saw your video 5 tips to ace your drama school audition. You said that if there were questions, that we could ask, so here I am. I'm from Belgium and I'm going to audition in London. For the audition, I have to learn a monologue from the Elizabethan or Jacobean era. However, in my country, we learn almost nothing about Shakespeare, so I have a really hard time to find the right play and the right monologue, since there is so much material! I also saw on different websites that it is best not to pick a too popular monologue or play, since it is done too much on auditions. It would help me so much if I knew what to avoid, so that I can tune down the huge amount of monologues available! So it would be awesome if you good give me some advice on that!
    Also, if you know which characters are around my age (22), that would be amazing!
    I hope I'm not bothering you and I do hope you can help me out!
    Thank you so much already, I enjoyed your video a lot and it definitely helped me!
    Greetings!

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 7 років тому

      Hey Elise,
      Shakespeare can definitely be overwhelming. Don't worry about finding the most obscure Shakespearean monologue. There is a reason we've done these plays for hundreds of years because there's always more to discover. Have you read any Shakespeare plays? That would be a good place to start, because whatever monologue you choose you'll need to read the play. In terms of a suggestion I would look at Miranda in the Tempest. Let me know if that's helpful! Break a leg :)

    I am 15, and auditioning for the national youth theatre in Britain in February, I'd really love to do a Catherine monologue from "a view from the bridge" but she is meant to have a very specific American accent, the audition criteria advised against doing accents, and I am Scottish so have a Scottish accent. Would I look silly doing the monologue, but just in my natural accent? Thanks very much!

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 7 років тому +1

      I think that's a great monologue! If they don't need to see you doing an accent I think you can disregard it in this instance. I totally understand why you'd want to do an New York accent, and if it helps you to do one- do it. Otherwise I wouldn't stress about it. Break a leg!

    Hi Candace! First of all, I want to thank you for making these types of videos. I am applying for London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. My question is about the modern monologue and I have chosen the 21st century (over 20th century). So I what I was meaning to ask is that can I take the monologue from a movie?

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 8 років тому

      +Heidi Caterina Thanks Heidi :) I would read the requirements carefully, and see if they require monologues from plays. If it's not required you can do a monologue from a movie. That being said if you're auditioning for a theatre school best to err on the side of what they're teaching. So if you'll study film acting there, I think you're ok; but if they don't teach film acting then probably not the best choice. But there are so many exceptions to this- good writing is good writing whether it's in a movie or play so I'd say if it's a great writer you can get away with anything. Very long winded answer but I hope that helps!

    • @SinikkaShow
      @SinikkaShow 8 років тому +1

    hi Candace Thankyou for the great video it was so informative! I have an audition for a prestigious London drama school in about a month and they require a contemporary and classical monologue for the the audition. I have already chosen my contemporary one which is nina from the seagull, which is a very sad monologue, and am now deciding between two classic monologues, one of which I feel more comfortable with but is very similar to my contemporary, and the other which I feel less confident with, but is more contrasting. which would you suggest I do? Thankyou again for the video and for taking time to read my comment! I really appreciate the help you're giving to the people that comment on your video :)

    Great tips! I like the 5th suggestion of using your laptop to record yourself, very sound advise. Do you find using any specific techniques for memorizing lines to be more helpful than others? What would be your approach to memorize a 2 minute monologue for a last minute audition? Thanks!

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 8 років тому +1

      +Brittany Jaxon Hey Brittany, thanks for watching! One thing you could do to help you memorize is record yourself saying the lines and listen to the scene or monologue as you go through your day. I sometimes do this if I'm driving all over town and don't have time to sit down and memorize :) Hope this helps!

    • @brittanyjaxon
      @brittanyjaxon 8 років тому +1

      +Candace Hammer great advise! I actually DID do that, it helped a lot but what had me nail my part was the app mylines. It's incredible. You can upload the script into the app from a desktop, and either use your own voice or use the computer voice within the app, and it's like having someone there with you practicing. You say your line and then tap the screen and the next line will be read out loud through your phones speaker and so on. There's a wide array of options to suit your specific needs. I highly recommend it. Keep up the tips! Your videos are great! 😆

    Great video :) I just wanted your advice: where should I look when auditioning? I'm not sure if there will be a camera. From drama class I've learned to look above the audience line but I'm not sure about looking above the panel?

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 7 років тому

      If there is a camera, keep you eye line next to the camera but don't look directly in it. If there's no camera, I typically look over the heads of the audition-ers. Hope that helps :) Break a leg!

I've been doing research for days, and every time I find a piece I really do connect with I also find that it's on a list or something on the internet that says it should be avoided. I'm an international student so there aren't a lot of people I have turn to for advice especially since I'm auditioning for musical theatre programs in the US and Canada; the internet is my biggest resource. Would you have any recommendations for contemporary female monologues in the age range 21+?
    I like characters that sort of wear their heart on their sleeves; women that aren't afraid to express their emotion- especially pain- and know how to use their femininity. Women who just want to be loved but aren't always sure how. T hemes dealing with unrequited love, feeling misunderstood, comedic self-deprecation etc.
    One of my all-time favorite characters is Fanny Bryce from the musical Funny Girl if that helps.
    Thanks! :)

    Hi Candace,
    For my college audition I chose two specific and I would like to know if they are good enough and contrast enough. First off, Walters monologue from A Raisin in The Sun it is ethnic which I am and dramatic, secondly, Charles monologue from Blithe the Spirit it is comedic in its own way. Thanks

      +Deborah Jay I think those are great choices! As long as you are fully invested in those characters' individual journeys, they will be plenty contrasting! Break a leg and let me know how it goes :)

    I´m going to an audition in London for a Drama School and besides a Shakespeare monologue (which I already found) I gotta choose a (contrasting) monologue from a contemporary play, but unfortunately I´m not all too familiar with modern/contemporary plays.....
    Do you maybe know any websites where I can find monologues from plays of the 20th century? I´m kinda desperate because I don´t know where else to look....
    Thanks in advance!

    Do you think performing a monologue from a film would hurt your chances when auditioning for a theatre program? I have an audition coming up and a monologue from a film that I'm very comfortable and confident with but I'm unsure if I should keep it or do one from a play.

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 7 років тому

      I think it's preferred to do material from plays when auditioning for drama school but ultimately they are just trying to get a sense of what type of actor you are. It's best to go with what you are most comfortable with. Break a leg on your audition!

    I have a though question, I'm auditioning for Film an TV school and they clearly stated (and I quote) "Please note that you will not need to present a pre-learned monologue or speech" (which makes sense if you're going to film school) , but there will be a screentest in which we will be given a script or a film script and then you have to perform in front of camera - how do I prepare for that? I've never even been in front of an audition camera or even film/tv camera (I have about a good week before audition I would love if you could get back to me) Thanks

      +Kristina Garrow Oh no I hope I've reached you in time! I would say practice cold reading. Set up your phone, download scripts from online, and practice making choices on the fly. Record yourself doing the scene for the first time and watch it back and see what you want to do differently next time, rinse and repeat. Break a leg! Let me know how it goes :)

I wanted to ask you something because i can't find it anywhere on the internet, i hope you don't find it silly although it might sound silly! @CandaceHammer 9 років тому +1

      Rachael Ferguson Thanks for watching the channel! Sorry for the very delayed response! But yes I think A Doll's House counts as a classical piece. It's heightened language and it's before the turn of the century. Schools have differing requirements so just check what they are asking for :) Hope this help!

      Rachael Ferguson Well, Doll´s House is not a classical piece. I'm studying dramma in Mexico and I ask this to my teacher, and my teacher tell me that is not a classical piece because it was written by Ibsen who is a modern writter. So is my P.O.V ( like the video LOL)

    Hey +Candace Hammer, I noticed there was one more thing missing from your tips, and that is movements. Where do I go? When is it necessary? Do you have any tips on that?

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 8 років тому +1

      +Amirul Hakim Thanks for watching and great question! One thing you can do to create specific movements for your character is watch an animal that has similar traits as the character. For example if your playing someone in a position of power, maybe watch a large cat- lion or tiger. That is a good place to start movement wise. I think when it comes to auditions less is more in terms of physicality. But allow yourself to play in rehearsal and see what you come up with. Hope that helps!

    Hello, I am a new author and want to read some of my work for our southampton writers circle youtube channel. However I have basic drama skills and therefore don't sound professional. Can you give any tips for dramatic reading? Many Thanks Steve Barnett

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 8 років тому

      Hey Steve, Sorry for the delayed response. In terms of dramatic readings the most important components are being heard and understood. To be heard- make sure you slow down, breathe, and speak as clearly as possible. Then to convey the text well, the better understanding you have of the text the more your audience will understand. So read the text multiple times, examine the themes, the relationships, and begin to embody the point of view of the character. Hope that's helpful! Thanks for watching :)

    I'm doing a monologue from an Australian play called Dags and i'm acting as Gillian and i'm finding it a bit difficult to truely understand where she 'stands', I think this is because she isnt totally honest to herself and tries to be lots of different people at once. I've watched some girls do the same monologue on youtube, but they always portray her as kind of 'crazy'. This annoys me because i know she isnt crazy shes just muddled and has no one to really talk it through with (her family kinda broken). So if you have any tips on how to really get through who i believe her to be in my acting that would help heaps because a lot of her is in her head (she doesnt express it). Thanks 😊 (sorry, i know you posted this ages ago).

      @CandaceHammer 7 років тому

      Hey Kathleen, Thanks for watching :)
      I guess the first question I would have for you is what does she want? What is she fighting for in her life? Then I would choose a wide array of ways she goes about getting what she wants (sometimes referred to as "actions.") No tactic is too big or 'out there' especially for "crazy" or "muddled" characters. You're right to assume that playing muddled is a trap. If you can get clear on what she wants, and what she's doing to get it (even if she's failing) then you'll be able to move forward. Hope that helps! Break a leg on your audition!

      Candace Hammer the trouble is that she is after a boy called Adam who is the best looking boy at her school, she says she is hopelessly infatuated with him and dreams about all these unbelievable scenarios that would never happen because he has yet to notice her at this point (the part in the play im reading she is talking about her love for him) and she describes herself as fat, ugly, a dag and she has almost no self confidence along with no friends. She is doing nothing to get him at the moment, only dreaming but later on her sister helps her and eventually she gets him but doesnt want him anymore. I think thats a big part of her desire for him, that at the beginning she just wanted him because everyone in school did but she didnt even know him but when she gets to know him later on he seems like he 'wants' himself aswell (he's up himself/thinks he is the best).
      So should i act as though im crazy about him but kinda have this feeling that he's not all what he's cut out to be and that im just trying to fit in by following everyone else, but i try to block out my logic for the time being because its easier to dream than admit the truth because then i's have to go back into reality, which doesnt treat me very good. I also believe she is holding herself back a bit from getting what she wants (him) because she doesnt know if she really wants him.

    • @CandaceHammer
      @CandaceHammer 7 років тому +1

      You've done a nice job of charting your objectives, and you've noticed that they shift. So first you play 'crazy in love,' and then you play 'I've got to get out of this relationship.' You don't have to try to foreshadow anything in your acting. As in life, you only have the information available to you at the time. So make sure your character doesn't know more than she should i.e. playing the end at the beginning. She learns something by going after what she wants. You said there may be some fear around getting what she wants, so you can explore that in moments, but ultimately it doesn't change her objective. Hope this is helpful in your exploration of this character!
