Anyway man, been following your SGU vids from the start, the OG subscribers know you're a genuine dude and you're going to be a great doctor bro! All the best from another California subscriber!
Damn brother, this one almost had me in tears. Thank you so much man. Everything you said really hit home. I appreciate you letting me know. Really thank you for always supporting me. Much love og

Hey Sean! You were a fellow interviewee for one of my psych interviews and in our short interaction I was impressed by how personable you were. Glad I stumbled upon your youtube page. Quite frankly, I'm shocked psych didn't work out but I'm confident you're destined for big things. I admire your positive attitude.
And Congrats on IM! SOAP was crazy this year. Big accomplishment. Have you considered an addiction medicine fellowship down the line? IM/psych cross paths at that point.
FAHAD! How are you doing, no way man, that is so cool, thank you for checking out the videos. Yeah, I was surprised but it is okay, everything happens for a reason, and if it was meant to be I will find my way back to psych. I have definitely thought about addiction medicine, it has been something I considered heavily. So we will see what the future holds. I appreciate you dropping by to say hi. Wish you all the best with residency, I hope you got the spot you wanted most :)
I did my residency 30 years ago. We used to call those unfilled spot interviews "warm body interviews" If you have pulse and blood pressure you are good to go.

We did not have work hour rules then (NYC big bad hospitals) You can always look for a psych spot during IM as you are always a stronger candidate while in any program. I had that feeling I could become a little more competitive after a year of residency under my belt. But then I actually started to really like IM. But I will always keep that in mind. Thanks for the advice. I can’t complain, we have it so easy compared to your experiences.
I admire your positive outlook on not getting into psychiatry, and understanding that you'll love what you do no matter what. Internal Medicine is great, and getting matched in Las Vegas just makes it that much better! As you said, you were a good applicant, and gave it your all, so I am glad you're not beating yourself up about it. Proud of you!

So happy for you Sean!! Echoing everyone else's comments but your transparency and positivity is so refreshing. I'm a US med student, first gen with no one really to give me advice on what to do as I progress. In just a few vids I've learned a lot about the match process from you. Big thanks!

That’s incredible story. You aren’t the only one I’ve heard go through the initial heartache, but still made it happen. Did you ever consider swapping?
Thank you so much. Yea of course I was considering it. But then because of what I learned in my first year. I was able to save my mom from serious medical complications. Then I was sold on IM
Congrats on matching Sean, even if this isn't the speciality you originally wanted it will all work out for the best for you! You have such a positive outlook on things and I can definitely tell you'll be an awesome doctor! If you don't mind, could you do a video on your overall experience at SGU looking back and things you did that helped or things you wish you had done, etc? Tips for future/current students. Maybe even include some of your friends from SGU if possible about their experience as well with a Q/A session? It would mean a lot!
Junebug, I love the suggestion! thank you so much, i have something similar in mind, so lets see if it will work. thank you again, and thanks for the support
Sean, thank you for your humor and complete transparency regarding these topics. You definitely rock and are my #1 med UA-camr! As someone who is applying to SGU and has wanted to become a psychiatrist all my life, my biggest fear would of course not being able to match into the specialty I have long had a burning passion for. I’ve even published a book that dealt heavily with psychiatry as the focal theme. I know the match process for me is way down the line, but worrying about these things enables me to do more research and gain more insight from those who have weathered the rigor. I wager that internal medicine would be my back up specialty as much as I can’t see myself practicing anything else. Unfortunately, for IMGs, these are real obstacles. That being said, how could one incorporate an emphasis on the treatment of psychiatric disorders within internal medicine? I do not see anything psych-related as far as sub-specialties. Any thing you might be able to shed some light on and maybe even ward off some anxiety is greatly appreciated!
Hey bud. Yeah I totally hear you. Yeah when you’re actually practicing you have a lot of free range. Up to your discretion of how much you want to treat psych disorders. It’s not like you can bill insurance for psychotherapy or anything. But you would be surprised how much you see in a generic field like IM. Also you can choose to work in outpatient psych offices or inpatient psych. They work hand in hand with IM docs too. So it’s what you make of it. Jah feel? Thanks for the nice message homie

Congratulations! I don’t think that internal medicine is a step down at all. There are so many options for subspecialty and with your great attitude and talent. I am certain that you will find what you love.
Hey congrats on matching! I just wanted to put this out there that family medicine/internal medicine doctors prescribe more psychiatric medications for anxiety and depression than psychiatrists do. As a family/internal medicine you might be able to help more of the people in the general population than as a psychiatrist. Everything happens for a reason. Maybe you will find internal medicine more satisfying. Since psychiatry is getting so competitive, it might become overrated. Who knows haha. You seem like someone who would make a compassionate doctor. Good luck! I live in Las Vegas too btw so I’m happy that you matched here. Hope you like it here.
Wowwww what a thoughtful message, thank you so much for this. made me so happy to read. I truly appreciate it. I am hoping for all the same things too. thank you for reinforcing my outlook on it. you're the best :)

HUUUUGE congrats on matching! This video is excellent and I feel like you're gonna blow up soon. I've recently graduated too from Ireland and we find out where we spend our intern year 3 weeks before we actually start. i'm so jealous you find out so far in advance. So excited to follow the rest of your journey!
Wow hahah I love your username. Thanks so much man. I appreciate your support. Wow that’s really tough. There’s no time for moving or finding a place. Wow. Congratulations though. 🎉
Hey man, thanks so much for sharing this info. Went through something similar and will be talking about it on my channel in the future, the match is all messed up and the beauty of all of these fields and mental health is the flexibility to pursue those root interests anywhere. But the stigma against going unmatched or not getting into your first choice discipline is wild and with the spread of competitiveness in psych, it sucks for us. Did you ever think about doing an additional year or a transitional year? Would love to talk further, all the best man proud of you sharing this story and for sticking-and-moving so successfully. All the best.
Wow man. What an awesome comment. Thanks for the thoughtful message. I appreciate the support. Yeah man. Going unmatched leaves you with such a huge disadvantage.. No to the transitional year. I am just happy I got into a residency at the end of the dah.
@@SeanDarmal Hundred percent, and I think that attitude is the best thing - you'll be able to lend that compassionate, empathetic, and humble demeanour to really provide better and DIFFERENT care compared to your stereotypical IM puzzle-solver (generalizing of course, no offense to the IM homies). I think it's incredibly important UA-camrs like you (and me one day hopefully) talk about these "embarrassing" times or pitfalls in the schooling process. The culture is pretty toxic with self-aggrandizing and flexing to justify the sacrifices, so others going through this don't have too many real testimonials from people who go through it. I'm positive you've got the charisma, personality, and work ethic to really go far in a lot of different ways - this side hustle is just one example. Good luck brother you'll do great things, and hopefully we can collab one day waay down the line!

wow thanks so much, you know i never really thought of neurology. but i just checked sgu's match list for you, it seems like around 15 people matched into neurology, that is a bit of a small number, but it still isnt impossible. maybe take a look for yourself postgrad.sgu.edu/ResidencyAppointmentDirectory.aspx?year=2021 hope this helps
@@SeanDarmal omg thank you so so much for checking that🥺 you’re the kindest! And yes, that is a small number. But I checked for neurology and it says that even if you do internal med residency, you can match into neurology later as internal med residency is a requirement for neuro

Also, (if you have time ofc!) is it possible to make a video on core clinical rotations during 3rd year? Just your experiences and thoughts. Is there a psych-based fellowship you could do after internal? That could actually be a cool combo. I know there are a lot of fellowships, just don't know about psych-basedones.
@@SeanDarmal it's kind of strange there isn't some type of psych fellowship; it would be so helpful for family med. I laugh but I'm actually not joking, I really don't think I could do it.

I really dont know, but psych has been getting steadily more competitive as the years went on. even when I was applying to med school I was told psych was getting competitive, I was just hoping i would be done before it was too late hahah. but it was probably a number of things, even me as an applicant I probably couldve had better scores or more publications to be more impressive. who knows
Hey man, thanks for sharing. Do you think a Geriatric Medicine fellowship would give you that nexus between IM & Psych? I hope you get to infuse behavioral medicine into your future practice!

yesssss dude, I hope I can share a lot of the new things I learn with everyone. I appreciate you stopping by again
come back we miss youuuuu lols!
Yesssss. Congratulations💓💓💓. Your mindset is absolutely wonderful omg. I can't wait for that awesome "resident vlogs" haha. Stay safe!
I swear I will do my best and make the coolest videos. it will only get better. hahah. thank you for always supporting me.

So excited to follow the rest of your journey!
Wow hahah I love your username. Thanks so much man. I appreciate your support. Wow that’s really tough. There’s no time for moving or finding a place. Wow. Congratulations though. 🎉

Congratulations man!!!
Thank you so much 😀
congratulations! currently T4, this video was motivating!!
That’s amazing you’re in term 4!! That’s a tough term! You got this! Thanks for watching too!!! I appreciate it :)
Congratulations!!!
Thank you!!
Congrats!!!!
thank you so much !
I don't know you but I screamed Congrats brov!! wtf lol?
I like how short and straight to the point you are in your videos! Keep it up
HENRYYY my bruv, thank you so much man. I can feel the love and support, which means a lot. Yeah you like the length, I try my best to edit out all the filler, my videos are the opposite of dragon ball z
CONGRATULATIONS 🎊! I’m so happy for you ☺️
Thanks Chidera!!! I remember you from way back!! thanks for stopping by again
Woooohooo. I have been waiting since the last video. So proud of you. Great job
Yay! Thank you! good to hear from you again, I hope things are going well with school!!!
You're such an amazing and entertaining soul haha. Absolutely love your videos! and a BIG congratulations to you man! I was wondering how hard would it be to match into Neurology if i went to a Caribbean school?
wow thanks so much, you know i never really thought of neurology. but i just checked sgu's match list for you, it seems like around 15 people matched into neurology, that is a bit of a small number, but it still isnt impossible. maybe take a look for yourself
postgrad.sgu.edu/ResidencyAppointmentDirectory.aspx?year=2021
hope this helps
@@SeanDarmal omg thank you so so much for checking that🥺 you’re the kindest! And yes, that is a small number. But I checked for neurology and it says that even if you do internal med residency, you can match into neurology later as internal med residency is a requirement for neuro

congrats dude. So happy for you!
ayyee thanks for checking out the new video. i appreciate you brother
@@SeanDarmal Big fan of your channel. Hope you keep vlogging during residency.
Hey Sean, term 2 student at SGU here. I have enjoyed your videos and wanted to congratulate you on your way to residency!
Also, (if you have time ofc!) is it possible to make a video on core clinical rotations during 3rd year? Just your experiences and thoughts. My worries about Step 1 has shifted to clinical rotations and Step 2 as Step 1 will be Pass/Fail.
Thank you and congratulations again!!
Thanks so much for checking out the videos. i appreciate it. I will definitely make that one of my next videos. thank you for the suggestion :)
Congratulations bro 👏 👏👏
Thank you , I appreciate it bro!
Hey dude, you did it you're going to be doctor congratulations! Although things may not have happened as originally planned I believe that everything happens for a reason. Sean Darmal Of course! I started a week and a half ago at SGU and you’re so relatable it’s definitely helping me to power through and see the light at the end of the long tunnel 🤣 Best of luck you’ll do amazing!
u so damn positive I love you man and can’t wait to see you in Vegas BABYYYY
Arvind, my bro, thanks for stopping by again. yeah man, hopefully things go well, excited to move on to the next stage. much love brother
Bro this year's match was a blood bath my friend who goes a decent MD school had an 87% match rate. Regardless, congrats bro wish you the best!
man it must of been really tough, i appreciate the support though, hope your friend got matched too man
Is there a psych-based fellowship you could do after internal? That could actually be a cool combo. I know there are a lot of fellowships, just don't know about psych-basedones.
there is addiction medicine which is probably the closest i could get to it. maybe even geriatrics too
@@SeanDarmal it's kind of strange there isn't some type of psych fellowship; it would be so helpful for family med. My husband and I have been living with his grandmother for the duration of the pandemic to help her; before this I was considering geriatrics, now I am not lol. I laugh but I'm actually not joking, I really don't think I could do it.
Congratulations on matching! Everything in life works out the way it's supposed to (cliche, lame to hear sometimes) but it gives me some peace of mind sometimes and it sounds like you already have a great outlook! Looking forward to bigger and better things from you!
Ayyee!! I’m so glad you stopped by again. Thank you! Yeah we made it g. Cheers to bigger and better
Thank you as well for your great info!
Congratulations my man! You matched at a good place too! You can do much worse than internal med @ LV.
I was over the moon when I saw the offer from NV come in. I completely agree. Lets gooo brother
Can you please make these videos longer so you can start making money from them because dude, you are seriously a breath of fresh air to watch!
hahhaha this was so sweet. thank you so much, I turned off the monetization on my videos for now, I just want people to watch ad free, theres too many ads on youtube nowadays. but thank you. i appreciate you saying so
Congrats huge accomplishment! I am a T4 currently living in Vegas! HMU if you need any advice or help navigating around Vegas, always nice to see a fellow SGU student succeed!
Thank you so much Jasmine!! I will definitely let you know. good luck, term 4 is a tough one
I teared up watching this. Congrats! I’m so glad everything worked out just fine. Do you see yourself switching?
awww thank you so much for your support, i am really glad everything worked out too. If it is meant to be, i will find my way back to psych at the end of the day. but I will keep an open mind
I just wanted to let you know that yes, I did press the like button
hahah its nice to see you on here again, thanks for watching.... and pressing like hahah
Congrats that's amazing well deserved! So interesting, did Psych become more competitive this year or was it just because this whole Online Interview process?
I really dont know, but psych has been getting steadily more competitive as the years went on. even when I was applying to med school I was told psych was getting competitive, I was just hoping i would be done before it was too late hahah. but it was probably a number of things, even me as an applicant I probably couldve had better scores or more publications to be more impressive. who knows
yes pressed it bro hahahah CONGRATS dude
thank you g, thanks for the support
Letsss gooo👏🏻👏🏻
Hey man, thanks for sharing. Do you think a Geriatric Medicine fellowship would give you that nexus between IM & Psych? I hope you get to infuse behavioral medicine into your future practice!
Danny, first off, nice professional profile pic, and secondly, yeah I was looking at fellowships that you can do after IM, you bring up a very very good point about Geriatrics, i will definitely keep it in mind. thank you man. all the best
Woah , congrats Sean on getting a residency! You have been working really hard , wish you all the best for a new start 💯👍🤗👍
Naushad, thank you so much brother, I hope things are going well for you at school too. thanks for the support man.
Congratulations! I love your outlook! This was a very encouraging video. Welcome to Vegas! My husband is about to start his 4th year here at UNLV. He is leaning towards internal medicine. I am excited to see where the match takes us next year!
Thank you so much Halee, and congratulations to yall. Most definitely, thanks for stopping by and watching the video too. best of luck to your family
dudddeeee i wanna hug you
I am hugging you back right now.
Congratulations my friend. Hoping you will enjoy IM. You'll do well whatever...I know it. You're inviting all your subs to Vegas to celebrate right?
My brother!!! I was waiting for you to pop off. I knew you wouldn’t let me down with the fire comments. Let’s goooooo mannnn. We made it g. You know already man. My house is your house.
Congratulations
thank you so much, and thanks for checking out the video too
After completing 2-3 years of IM you will be able to get a psychiatry residency. Of the 1000 students that started in the first semester of your class, how many made it all the way thru?
