It seems like guys are insecure or something in the lifting aka aesthetics community. These posers are all show but no go. Performance over aesthetics all day. I guess you can differentiate between athletes and posers in the gym. If you know you know
its shitty. i think i might suffer from it a bit. In the mirror i can definantly see shape, but not really "muscular" even though people do get amused by my physique from time to time. from a performance perspective, i dont know anymore since im not setting my foot on the field.
I feel everybody has body dysmorphia to some degree it's all about being aware of it. I once got down to single digit bodyfat (don't know exact number) and still thought I had too much fat. Even now I see fat that others don't but but I'm aware that I'm being too self critical and I think awareness is key.
@@im_reyz8780 i disagree. People tend to see themselves as “fatter” than or not as lean as they really are because of a lot of unrealistic expectations from the fitness industry
Something about that photo looked extremely photo shopped. Something off in the abdomen area. It’s odd if it’s not photoshopped lol. It looks as if his hips and lats were erased. Like they were blended into the background to make his midsection perfectly straight.
Most people who leave demeaning comments arent even in shape, they just compare you to the people they see on instagram while they eat doritos on their couch
I kinda agree. But are you saying that talking about this and trying to figure out which percentage to stay at is body dysmorphia too? Because I’d say it kinda is because you’re being way too strict on yourself
This is absolutely correct. It's the exact same as an adult person who is severely underweight but still thinks they are fat when they look in the mirror. Those expecting a virtually unattainable physique are part gross ignorance and part body dysmorphia. As Igor said, we have social media liars to thank for that.

Option 4 on why instagram fitness folks look like that "year round" - they don't. The photos are drip fed throughout the year and just come from a 1 month set of photoshoots at the start of the year.
Plus. Do you have a professional photographer on hand and perfect lighting and a pump and maybe even fake tan and if course good old Photoshop on hand, when you look in the mirror?

There are several guys in my gym that are sub-15% as well that I believe are natty. All it takes is a bit of self control with your nutrition and consistency/honest effort with your workouts.
Thanks Igor, another great video. Let me, quickly, tell you my story. I'm an older guy (70 y.o.) and for the last decade I've maintained a 14% BF (according to my instrumentations). I could only see the outline of my abs that I've worked on all my adult life and it was frustrating. Two summers ago, I decided to get shredded so I could really impress the beach crowd and I got down to around 10%. I could finally see my abs but my face looked like crap. I had hanging jowls and a sagging neck. My wife hated it. She thought I was sick. She said I looked like a poster child from a WW2 death camp. I wanted to look better and all I did was make myself look worse. MORAL: not everyone looks good shredded.
I am 60 years old and maintained a BF percentage of around 12 % my whole life, at times even going down to 8 % at least according to my body fat capillar. I work out every second day for about 1 h and that for the last 35 to 40 years. Needless to say, I never used any sort of drugs, only protein and creatin. My daily calories normally don't exceed 2000 which is enough to never get hungry or having to forgo consumption of tasty food (I like spaghetti ) - it's not hard at all. And it's true what you say, especially when one gets older, that you don't look good in the face at too low a body fat and it makes you look 5 to 10 years older. So one has to decide whether to look really shredded or to look good in the overall appearance even if that means 1 or 2 % more BF.
Thank you for this video man!! Last year, I did my first real cut and went from 165 at 19% to 148 at 8%. I was damn proud and had abs, but also felt sickly and cold all the time. I also used to get super tired and had 0 sex drive at all. Fast forward now and I’ve bulked up to 177 and put on some much needed size while retaining some ab definition, and I’ve honestly never been happier! I feel like I’m at a much more comfortable level. I feel like we’ve all prioritized aesthetics and have lost sight of enjoying life and the fun of fitness as a whole. Not saying we shouldn’t want to look good, but more so that your pursuit of an aesthetically pleasing body should be for your own betterment and fun as opposed to attention online!
Best is to be at a level that’s healthy balance between enjoying lifting able to do any physical activity you want to and enjoy eating food and enjoying life. Having %10 body fat isn’t everything life has to offer guys 😂
From my understanding 10% or even 8% is sustainable theoretically for more people than believed. There is evidence that the leaner you are the more protein you need to consume daily, this makes perfect sense as normally that energy would be coming from the body fat you lost. In a 2014 study it was noted that within a 500-1000 calorie deficit most bodybuilders saw no benefit from going past 1.4 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass and the lowest used for benefit was 1 gram. Since the requirements varied between individuals of different leanness you can conclude it was the body fat making the main difference. It even quotes there’s evidence for that within the paper. You can find it by googling evidence based research protein lean body mass or something it’ll be one of the first links. If you’re 180 pounds and normally consume 180 grams following the 1 gram per pound of weight logic then if this is all correct you might find benefit from going up to something like 225 grams while at 8% body fat. 8-10% is within the minimal amount of fat needed to not die
@@peliac7319 Only that it’s possible it’ll help be a little more lean than you otherwise could be. If you’re female add 10% to whatever number guys are at. A guy at 10% is like a girl being at 20%

The honesty is really helpful man! I'm at around 14% bodyfat and look pretty much like the guy with the delt vein you showed. Not crazy lean, but you can see my abs. I really appreciate you focusing on the fact that it's ok to not be totally yolked all year. You're awesome!!!!
@@randomfactsguy1386 statistically what comes up.for me when searching is 10%, 11%, and 12%, more than 11% or 12% and your testosterone starts dropping (but individual variance may exist), and 8% or less and your testosterone is hypothesized to drop in that direction too (again, individual variance may exist, and the lower threshold is not as well defined). However if you feel most comfortable at 15% that's fine, I just wouldn't recommend going above about 20% for health concerns.
@Ben Williams 7% to 8% is like my default and where I'm comfortable... (possibly a little higher though as I can't guarantee the accuracy of my measurements) but I also don't really have much muscle, so I'm not going to get on stage any time soon, that's for sure. I'm not saying I'm near normal though, there's a lot of room for individual variance.
This is a great video. No one talks about this. I'm someone who has always looked at people who are so much better than me, they may as well be a different species, and made them the standard to strive for. I've done this with everything, since I was little. It is a horrible way to live. For me around 13-15% I feel the most athletic. Depends on your goals and lifestyle I guess. If you have no life other than taking pics of yourself for insta and want zero energy then go for single digits. For most people with other responsibilities and goals in their life its not a realistic goal. Also My job requires me to be mentally sharp and perform math at a high pace speed and being under 13ish % bf causes mental fatigue throughout the day and impacts my performance at work. All depends on your goals and priorities.
@@bastiano2939 Its different for sure. After I did it several times it just started to lose its appeal. Feeling great and looking great is a win win, feeling like dog crap just to be a bit leaner is a win/lose. As you get older you start thinking differently about things. When you are a teen/early 20's being perceived as cool is all that's important. Example when I was a teen I always wanted the coolest clothes. Now that I am in my 30's I always go for what's most comfortable. There is actual scientific studies as to why this is. When you are young you have no resources and you are also thrown into a prison like social setting in school so fitting into groups is a more important survival mechanism. When you get older you care less what others think because you have more resources.
@@chrono8233 i think resources has almost nothing to do with it. It's just aging, maturing, becoming older and wiser / more centered. There are clearly biological reasons for this in addition to anything having to do with resources. If you take someone who still has barely any resources in his 30s he's still going to be completely different than he was in his teens with regards to how much he cares about "fitting in". It's aging, pure and simple. All 30 year olds have different priorities than when they were 15, resources or not
Very smart point about survivorship bias. Years ago, I low-key wanted to be a fitness influencer. I never did anything. I am, however, very glad virtruvian has. Really great content!
Mate this is one of the best most important videos you've done. Thank you for being honest. The number of celebs and influencers who pretend they walk around like this 24/7 and hide that they have PTS, cooks, are on gear etc insane. ITs great to feel that for those of us who aren't pro fitness people actors etc can actually walk around at 18 to 16% body fat and that's normal not lazy!
Igor, honestly, you opened my eyes, thanks to you I had an epiphany. Apparently, I had had body dismorphia for a while and I hadn't realized it until stumbling upon your video. I used to be chubby and thus decided to diet down to around 8-10% bf last summer and to maintain that weight. In the beginning I could somewhat tolerate it but then as the summer went by and life became stressful my low bf became a liability. I started feeling like shit, my body was all I was thinking about, it stressed me out even more than the exams I was taking in university. The last blow came recently when my libido suddenly dropped to very low levels, when my mood was horrendous for a couple of days straight and I started suffering from erectile disfunction. Since that moment, I've increased my calories and never looked back. My body looks fuller, I feel stronger and healthier, overall my mood is better and libido is back where it used to be. Thank you, Igor!
Amazing video, not only are peoples perceptions of body fat in the fitness community unrealistic, but people in general. Physical Education in school has failed so many people.
Absolutely true. I used to be 50+% body fat and now I hover around 25%. As a guy I'm at borderline obese, but the amount of hunger and low energy I have to overcome to go below 20% is insane for me and it's so sad to see people who are ashamed of themselves having a 6 pack. I lost 100lb, and still overweight, but for sure I am healthier than I used to be.
I'd like to ad to the three reasons why those guys look that way year round, which some of them just don't. They cut way down and take a year's worth of pics in different outfits then just slowly release them til their next cut
Wow, this video should be a must for every single person who started this journey as teenager thinking it was sustainable look jacked all year round forever.
Love the video. Used to be at 7% year around, then i crashed mentaly due to everything life, got depressed and ended up obese, now my goal is anything between 10-15% because i really don't want to ever go to sub 10% again. it really isn't worth it in my opinion. The mood, energy and the control over what you eat without the genetics is just to much to carry everyday. At the moment im at around 20% still on my journey down to sub 15% and i have way more energy at any given time.
Glad I found your channel. I’m 41 and last year managed to finally go below 22% and reach 12%… but that is impossible to maintain!! I was feeling depressed + stressed (blame social media) for starting to slip back, but 16% is still healthy. Thanks for your videos!
I hear you... I'm in that 12 to 14% body fat but my genetics give me a super high metabolism where I can sit at a computer all day (which I do for my job) and eat and I don't gain a pound. So I don't have to work too hard to stay lean but because I burn off the fat so quick, my body burns off the muscle as well so at 35 years old I'm 5'10" 140 lbs and I consider myself skinny but I've had people who know nothing about fitness tell me I must be wasting time in the gym because I'm not jacked or shredded. Society's unrealistic standards (especially for women) are killing peoples mental health.
@@kyleb5169Your body only burns muscle if you don’t eat carbohydrates. It’s a convoluted process that leads to faster weight loss and more tiredness. This is definitely a nutrition problem and not a gym/workout/metabolism problem (taking in some more healthy fats wouldn’t hurt too.)
this video should be on "the introduction to bodybuilding 101" tutorials and should be watched by the young minds who even think of lifting weights. the amount of expectations from youth for being 6% shredded but still huge is dangerous.

Dicovered your vids lately and they are great. Real advice, no pushy advertising (only at the end of the video). You tell the truth, all those popular bodybuilders with those fake ass pictures
I started bulking and I’ve lost weight ahaha. Eating is really hard when you take appetite suppressants, have a high metabolism, and burn at least 400 calories a day, on some occasions over 1000. (I’m estimating the amounts of calories burned via exercise but still).
Great and very well needed video. Great to see someone with your physique, track record, credentials and credibility share your experience and really put things in perspective with your energetic emphasis. Also love you taking the time for the tangent to EXPLAIN survivor bias, and how the "visible average/range" is totally skewed.
People think having below 8-10 percent is the best. But in reality the body fat percentage that is the best is 10-13%. It’s not to difficult to maintain and it only matters as long as your abs are showing. Veins don’t matter in my opinion. You don’t need to be shredded to the bone. But some abs showing in a relaxed state is ideal
Amazing video bro. I love you Igor. Bro there are so many people out there who will say "where's the 6 pack abs" or "nice belly" Guys ignore those kinda people. Majority of the average people aren't willing to even put effort into changing their body. Because it's all mental and take perseverance and discipline. They can say whatever they want cuz they don't work their ass of or even put any effort. Putting up with managing food and training schedule is enough of a mental effort . Which those kinda people haven't probably faced. Any kind of sports or workouts you do. I tell you, I respect you and admire you alot. So be proud of your body and yourself. Cuz you're already above the average people with that amazing personality and sense of discipline you have. Your consistency and passion is authentic. Keep it real and do It for yourself. Honestly you're doing many people a service by being a sign of inspiration. Whatever makes you healthy and happy. Don't do low body fat perc or shit like that unless you can and want to. Enjoy the way you workout and have fun with life.
This video resonated very heavily with me, I started taking my fitness journey with the upmost seriousily the past 12 months, and as someone who started with a real skinnyfat physique of 80kg at 188 cm and around 25% bodyfat, maybe more. I literally dieted for 9 months slowly and achieved recomposition down to 11% bodyfat 71 kg, and as soon as i went in a 10% kcal surplus i went up 1-2% bodyfat in 1 week from the rebound, and even though i felt 10 times better and my workouts were amazing, it really fucked with me seeing those abs lose some definition so fast. but now after several more weeks of lean bulking i understand that my body rebounded because i held myself on a small deficit for 9 months, but mentally i still have to trully come to terms with the image issues I gained from the diet rebound. but regardless now it;s time for me to make some serious gains over the next year, no more dieting for a while, the rule I gave myself is to lean bulk for at least 6 months before I allow myself to cut, and the cut should only be 1 week per month of lean bulk, no more 9 month long recomps, that approach was definitely not optimal I think.
If THAT is 'skinny-fat' and 'a bit of a belly fat', then I WANT THAT His physique is already incredible and healthy, and maybe with a bit of tan he'd look even more amazing
For that one photo in the beginning of the random guy, and people who make those comments; do you think that's any indication of a rise in body dysmorphia or something similar in the general public because of social media?
Good to hear someone mentioning the unrealistic standards set by social media and those lucky genetic people. The problem is trying to peel back the myths set by social media influencers that don't apply to every single person watching as everyone is built different. Earned a sub man!
right now i'm 22 5'9-5-10 give or take and my weight is at 180.7 I want to take it to 160. I love that edit for the word conjecture. That was classy. Anyway, this was a good video on a very important topic. Kudos. It's weird though because it goes both ways..., while incredibly lean people get called fat by people in the fitness comments, the opposite happens outside of the fitness world. Love the video!! Its about time we cut through all the sh** that social media has distorted the idea of body image. Everyone wants to follow and copy these physiques that are not realistic all year round. They are unattainable, not because of lack of dedication, commitment etc, but by lack of knowledge and being realistic. We all need to look in the mirror and compare to the person you see not the person who you think you could be on our social media feed.
I don't think there is such a thing as an "optimal body fat %", but a range from 11-15% seems pretty healthy to me, depending on what your goals are, whether aesthetic or strength/fitness/health related.
Men can be up to 21 percent body fat and generally be metabolically healthy. 21 percent bodyfat is the cutoff the US Navy uses for young male recruits. Now days, it's uncommon that men in general in the US are below 21 percent body fat. Quite the opposite, the average American male is overweight, with 21-25 percent body fat.
The question is why do you want to be strong? Because it makes you feel like you can defend yourself? If that's the case then just get to 10% and take jujitsu and you will have both.
@Charles Lee Ray 10% can make a lot people more tired and have less energy. Depends on the person. People feel great at varying levels between 10 to 18%
@@chrono8233 LMAO no, its because I want to increase weight in my lifts because it makes me feel great. Improvement. Also "self defence" fighting wouldnt do shit if your opponent was 3x your size. The problem I see with the whole IG/Tiktok movement is that all these 'fitness influencers' are only in it for the short term and if it's not permanent then it's just another diet imho. Eating behaviour, training, consistency - it's not something just for a year or two - it's a lifestyle. It should be as common as brushing your teeth in the morning. I'm 53 soon and have been training for.... about 34yrs now. Not big, not ripped, not shredded and not single digit bf - probably about 17. But I can have that beer, or that pizza - sometimes at the same time - as long as I'm consistent and I've made my peace with that. Pretty happy with it tbh. These influencers; I often wonder where they're all going to be in 5-10yrs time. Great content. Subscribed...

Body dysmorphia is real in the lifting community
Very real, and very frightening

its shitty. i think i might suffer from it a bit.
In the mirror i can definantly see shape, but not really "muscular" even though people do get amused by my physique from time to time.
from a performance perspective, i dont know anymore since im not setting my foot on the field.
Its a two bladed sword. For many its the thing that gets them into lifting but unfortunately It can mentally disconnect ppl with real world
I feel everybody has body dysmorphia to some degree it's all about being aware of it. I once got down to single digit bodyfat (don't know exact number) and still thought I had too much fat. Even now I see fat that others don't but but I'm aware that I'm being too self critical and I think awareness is key.

This is absolutely correct. It's the exact same as an adult person who is severely underweight but still thinks they are fat when they look in the mirror.

Holy shit I wanna look like you when Im 70

Might have to bulk up. I’m 124 5’1” and maybe like 15% bf and I feel like I’m dying. The low energy and absolutely zero sex drive is insane

I started bulking 2 1/2 months ago and working out seriously. Went from 12% to 15% body fat so far. Glad to hear that I’m still lean 😂
me too 😂
I started bulking and I’ve lost weight ahaha. Eating is really hard when you take appetite suppressants, have a high metabolism, and burn at least 400 calories a day, on some occasions over 1000. (I’m estimating the amounts of calories burned via exercise but still).
Your hair be looking clean AF. Hairstyle guide when
It floats magestically
Bro there are so many people out there who will say "where's the 6 pack abs" or "nice belly"
Guys ignore those kinda people.
Maybe you rebounded because our bodies think we’re starving at 10% bf. So it’s primes us to store food as fat ASAP.
If THAT is 'skinny-fat' and 'a bit of a belly fat', then I WANT THAT
His physique is already incredible and healthy, and maybe with a bit of tan he'd look even more amazing
For that one photo in the beginning of the random guy, and people who make those comments; do you think that's any indication of a rise in body dysmorphia or something similar in the general public because of social media?
Bro what kinda question is this? Ofc dysmorphia rises due to social media.
I was at 244 from my 18 to late 21 because of depression but i am doing my best to revert the horrible shape that i was in. i lost those 64 punds in like a year and i want to keep going until i reach a point where i'm comfortable with myself. I know that i probably won't ever get to like the way in which my body looks but i also know that my quality of life will keep improving if i keep going on this fitness journey. Thank you for the video Igor it was really inspiring to see a dude that i admire tackle issues like this.
Always bringing us quality content, thanks Igor
I love that edit for the word conjecture. That was classy. Anyway, this was a good video on a very important topic. Kudos. It's weird though because it goes both ways..., while incredibly lean people get called fat by people in the fitness comments, the opposite happens outside of the fitness world. I'm roughly 22% body fat and people try to tell me I'm skinny despite the solid inch thick wall of fat just hanging off my abs and the overall 6 extra unhealthy inches on my waist.
I guess, I'm this level of body fat. I'm around 17-18% now.
You can easily maintain 12-15
@@sagardahiya6138 I was in 14-15% before started to work. The only problem is my genetics of body fat suck so much and I had man boobs even in that condition
@@realshi3841 That means you were fatter than you thought. sorry bro just bringing the facts. However, Nothing wrong with
@@bastiano2939 or he having ganamecastia i think it called
Gyno is not the same as man boobs. You can tell the difference when you have it unless you are a donkey
This video actually helped me a lot because i've personally always been scrambling trying to figure out what a good body fat % i should try to maintain. THANKS!
Sweet brother. I have decided to automatically like all of your videos given how much research and effort you put into the getting the simplest point across.
You're very honest and that is absolutely wonderful. Loved the airplane-damage-statistics story. :)
I'm one of the guys that can train every day, eat very clean, sleep tonnes, fast weekly, and still sit around 17% body fat. It's nice knowing I'm not alone haha
I never been into fitness in my life and im finally under 20 percent. When i cough i see abs haha
Same here...You sound like my identical twin., though I actually sit on around 18 percent body fat.
Get your thyroid hormones checked. Iodine deficiency causes slow metabolism.
Being peeled going from 12-7 percent I felt like absolute dog shit the whole time and was anorexic thank you for making this clear.
I’m glad you made this video because I worry about my body fat percentage even though I know I’m not fat it takes a toll on the mental health worrying about body fat percentage and you end up barely eating and being malnourished
Agreed. It's going to vary by body structure. Taller people and shorter people are going to require different levels of body fat to be lean.
10% is my goal, however I lose motivation when I lose even a tiny touch of weight in my lifts due to my cutting.
Gotta pick and choose my man. Do you want strength or aesthetics? Only way to have both is go to that juicy juice
I started gym because my friend forced me to. I didnt join gym because of insecurites, like most of my peers. Everyone seems to start gym because of feeling skinny and weak these days.
@@adam_bbing Yeah, thats the annoying problem of being natty. Either be chubby and lift a lot, or be lean good-looking but lift less.
Welcome to another episode of the influencer that actually influences.
Love the way to deliver your messages, profound and funny, very entertaining and educational. Thank you!
I love your channel so much. Could you please do a training series
So basically 13-16 is the answer. You can diet down to 10-11 for a few weeks every year as a non competing fit guy, but, it's vetter to maintain 13-16 after that.
I'm curios how much body fat have the people who said that you are a litlle fat. I don't know why but I imagine that they are very fat. Btw this video helped me a lot because I was curious about this, if it is healthy to have a low body fat %. So thank you
More often then not, haters are the ones not trying. So chance AT LEAST over 20%
Boy am I early!
Oh btw Igor, I requested Back Guy to make a "Basically Vitruvian Physique".
Really hope he does it XD
"Video of a thousand claps" as one of the replies on that comment put it!
He did make that video a few months ago. I checked just now but can't seem to find it.
Weird, perhaps he took it down cuz it was music copyrighted or something.
The connection you drew from the planes and survivorship was incredible. Great video.
I remember about four years ago when I started working out and discovered igor’s channel and just couldn’t comprehend that even his face was lean
I feel like being a young male, you’ve helped a lot in terms of the reality of things to people within the fitness industry, I think some people (myself included) were brainwashed by social media. A lot of the people we look at are paid to be like that and it’s their livelihood after watching a lot of your videos I have a more realistic view. on gear or not I’ll still watch people because I enjoy their videos I just don’t put myself under unneeded pressure because I don’t have a sick or eight pack
As someone who’s at 12% currently trying to get down to 10% I really needed this
Igor has been saving my mental health in my almost 6 years of lifting weights. Ps: i was for so many years just like the guy who send you the email in the beginning of the video... thought of myself as "fat" and i was actually not even close to being fat...i still have days when these thoughts come to mind even tho i never go above 15%BF but with social media ee get really brain washed into thinking really wrong
Dang bro! I’d hate to be in the spot light like you are. People are ridiculous. Keep doing your thing - your videos are great.
