An example of how to run a business efficiently and properly and turn out a high quality product every time. The current government could learn much about how to run things by watching this, especially Mr Toolmaker Starmer.
I totally agree Shaun , I never cease to be amazed at the sheer volume of production and the superb non-compromise on quality , even in the knowledge that the final product would likely be cut short in its service life. It is so sad to realise what we have lost in producing so much in such little time.
@Roger.Coleman1949 Passionate about engineering and it's so sad to see the skills that have been lost in this country since the war time, or even the industrial revolution. Our aircraft and motor industry was world leading and a lot of the people involved such as Frank Whittle, R.J.Mitchell, Keith Duckworth of Cosworth, DeHavilland(and lots of others), were engineering geniuses the like of which we will never see again.
An excellent documentary about this legendary piece of machinery. Remarkable what These guys accomplished without computers back then. Greetings from Germany 🇬🇧🤝🇩🇪
I worked in Derby as a young man in the 1970's and no one I met, employees or otherwise referred to them as Rolls Royce. It was always Royces in memory no doubt of the engineer of that famous partnership.
Absolutely. It had a slight whiff of snobbery I always thought. If you referred to the company as 'Rolls', it immediately marked you as an outsider. Odd really, because Rolls had an engineering degree and Royce never even finished his apprenticeship.
@nickmiller76 Thanks for that I never knew Henry Royce didn't have top notch qualifications. Like George Stephenson, self taught and with such a strong Geordie accent he didn't impress Parliament with his origional railway ideas!
how are you doing in SA now? what is the political and economic situation? I enquire as I'm thinking of having a holiday in the cape, this is a genuine question, I was in stellenbosch in the 1970s, im just wondering what it's like now
My good friend was involved in Rolls Royce fuel cells years ago. He made many trips from the States to Britain. I have a beautiful blue Rolls Royce shirt from the company store.
Interesting to compare this film with the documentary, made a few years ago, detailing the making of the Trent engines. What is evident, is that the core values of the company have changed little. An emphasis on training and skills, innovative technology and experimentation and a commitment to excellence is central to what they do.
dont doubt the abilities today of RR. Just look at the Ultra Fan project. How a smaller company can compete via design, technological ability and vision
Whilst it would be wrong to take away anything from the achievement of RR in the design of the Merlin engine, Ford we’re pivotal in taking the design, steeped in design ‘excellence’, each engine having to be ‘fettled’ and parts matched at assembly, and ‘redesigning’ key elements to enable volume manufacture. Ford also introduced early ‘lean manufacturing’ in the production flows to improve volume output and provide resilience to the factory processes in the event of attacks. ‘Ford at War’, a very insightful book if you can get to read a copy.
Ever since the ar our governments have totally ignored manufacturing industry, What we have left has been sold off to foreign companies or let go bust. Now they have even let the steelworks go.My entire working life as an Engineer has been filled with uncertainty been redundant several times, never mind finally made it to retirement.

Isn't it sad that all this wonderful engineering and manufacturing skill goes into short lived war equipment. Sometimes one flight, often killing enemy and ally. Nothing has been learned now in 2024.
When you consider the short timescale, and the ground breaking developments in manufacturing, one is left wondering whether the UK could manage something similar in 2025? We cannot bring in HS2 within a reasonable time or budget, or even make safe tower blocks for flats, or correct past mistakes such as flammable cladding. Or even maintain the existing infra-structure. Not even fix pot-holes in the roads, or keep the water system functioning safely. How far we have fallen as a nation and as a culture. I believe this stems not so much from the people who do the actual work as a system of capitalism that only serves the financial rewards of the very richest in our society. Capitalist money has ruined Britain, and there is by now no way of getting back to our former efficiency and inventiveness. Our culture has rotted from the top into mediocrity. Best wishes from George
LMAO, imagine the post born 1990 dopes with their "internet" worthless degrees trying to do this, hilarious....on their phone 6 hrs a day ordering off AMAZON in the loos.....impossible.
Don’t know or think that capitalism is totally to blame, but you still need to learn and have experience in the basics. Is there a school that has courses in ‘common sense’? The internet is great information reference source but you still need to know ‘how to’ and ‘how long’ it will take to get it through to the hands and produce a good finished product. Soros and China don’t care about that however, remember, it’s the game of world control. Wok up everyone! What’s wrong with doing the job right. Those wok folks should try living in a socialist country for awhile. Belief in God may not look so bad after a few years.
"In order to increase the supply of engineering draftsmen, experiments were made in training women..." I realize they were facing full scale invasion by a merciless enemy, but were they really THAT desperate?? : )
I think that that is an extremely insulting remark to all those female engineers who over the years have successfully forged careers in engineering. My younger daughter would most certainly be extremely vehement in any response to your snide remark, given she is working for Rolls Royce as a fully qualified a/c gas turbine engineer.
@@adienowed6366 Sorry, that was a joke! I was attempting to make fun of the comment about "experimenting" with training women. I realize it was a different time, but it sounds so ridiculous now. This video is well worth watching, excellent stuff. Thank you for posting.👍😎🇦🇺
Excellent program of the design of an awsome engine. Happy New Year from San Diego, California USA
"Not much of an Engineer." A book by Sir Stanley Hooker. Exciting stuff.😊
I recommend that book, it's extremely interesting.
Ditto
Thank you Spen. Always enjoy these films, great stuff. :-)
Thanks and Merry Christmas from old New Orleans 😇 got to see these amazing engines in power boats in the 1960's
Proud to be of British stock. Merry Christmas from South Africa.

Sad to see the UK going down the crapper.
Greetings from England to all my brothers and sisters around the world!
Thanks Spen, a great Christmas gift!

Pen paper and slide rule. Fantastic
Not forgetting the essential pipe of course.
Amazing, done with modern computers or AI. slide rules and hand draughting, beautiful ❤
An excellent video.

Incredible .
Thank you Spen. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
"Only perfection is good enough" That's how an Engineer should think, and Alas everyone involved in British industry
sadly it gets out sold by good enough is cheap enough
So _that’s_ how they got the sodium into the exhaust valves. I was always curious.
Great find, thanks Spen
Did I see a Griffon towards the start? ... and a maybe a Vulture?

I have watched MrHewes working on Meteors, he had one in his front room, without realising the Meteor is a basic Merlin.
all built without computers, just slide rules, pencils, skilled draftsmen and machinists, foundries and dedicated employees
Most people who live in Derby refer to RR as Royces
Anyone wondering how a small island country ruled 2/3 of the world the biggest empire the world has ever seen then watch this!

not ford, it was packard. Ford turned down the contract.

Well yes, I suppose they could have given up and ultimately put their energies to work making "more useful" things for Germany...
K A P O O O T S K Y ....HIS KOZAK EYES WERE B L E W
There was an awful lot of smoking going on. Imagine how good the engine would have been if the design engineers weren't semi-hypoxic!😂😂
