I love Silvers groups. Been learning Lonley Woman and Strolln, Pretty Eyes. Do you ever play Lee Morgan compositions. So many tunes. He kind of took over after Silver left the Messangers. Love that funky hard bop style. Jackie McLean, Wayne Shorter, Larry Willis Herbie.
I played a version of Moanin that Lee was on with Bobby Timmons and Art Blakey. Most of his tunes are quintet tunes. So they work better with horns. I love Lee Morgan. Sorry end.
I hope you are well. Here in France the situation is difficult. And very difficult also in your country. Doctor I work a lot but I find some time to relax at the piano by following your tutos. Thank you Kent, my good friend.
Gee, Kent, this is probly the best jazz piano class out there. At first I thought it’d be difficult to follow you koz many other guys have this animated white-and-blue keyboard on top of the screen. But I soon found out that, strangely enough, I’m getting a lot more here than from those others. I think it’s your brilliant comments that tilt the scale, no “uhms”, no “ahs”, no telling your little life stories, no 10 seconds hesitations… I’m sure you know what I mean. Your comments are gold, most precise and clear and at the same time pure, classic jazz. Thank you so much! PS. Yes, a tutorial would be grand.
Many thanks, Adam. Your comment is very reassuring and helpful to me. I'm not getting the views I got a year ago because there's so much more competition with technical stuff like you mentioned.
Thanks for paying attention to my comment. As we all slowly and not entirely painlessly discover, the internet is a double-edged sword. You get to be heard and seen by total strangers way far away like myself and on the other hand…. or “edge,” you are marginalized by a thousand others who may know how to exploit different gimmicks to their advantage. I confess, I illegally copied your lesson to my HD and followed it frame-by-frame tryna figure which of your fingers does what, but I doubt many of us do that. What would it take (other than my modest monetary contribution) for you to get one of them fancy displays? Because (like the fellow classmate below said) your style is so kool!
Thank you again Kent. My friend, your videos make me so happy! You play so incredibly, excellently, so lovely and so powerfully. And you’re such a great guy who always cares to respond to his Subscribers. You my friend-, have soul.
Just for that....you get no response!! (just kidding) .No that's a great comment, Pill, and I try to respond to everyone but I get a lot of emails as well as comments (mostly favorable ) but an occasional unfavorable comment. I usually don't respond to them with a come- back, because I don't want to open up a back and forth controversy...it's not worth it, if they don't dig...you dig?
Hey Kent! This is one of my all-time favorite jazz pieces and I was sooo excited to see you play this!!! It would be totally awesome if you made a tutorial for this song cuz I’d love to play it myself!!!
Excellent job Kent! I always love to see your covers and especially when you do it with a backing track! Great musical ideas and interpretation of a great jazz standard by one of the jazz greats, Horace Silver. Bravo!
Indeed, I would love a tutorial, especially on the improv. I just transcribed Horace’s wonderful solo but want to get my head around some other ideas so I’m staying true to his style, but not just playing what he already did so brilliantly on this beautiful composition. You’ve already given me some with your awesome improv - thanks!
I'm still using the same backing method. I may buy some new software eventually. These backing tracks are prerecorded on UA-cam so you have to follow them and there's usually no intros or endings, Thanks!
I'm actually sourcing it from my phone. I'm using a bass/keyboard speaker cab with 12" speaker and tweeter, but the problem is turning it up hurts my ears. There's probably another solution...but involves equipment and it's very technical.
When I was a kid I always loved (and still like) Riders on the Storm from the Doors. But then one day I heard the exact organ solo from Riders on the Storm in an older Horace Silver song, and now I'd much rather listen to the original
That's a very interest bit of information. Actually Horace was from the Hartford area and Stan Getz discovered him and brought him to NYC. He hadn't really developed his style early on, but after his stint with the Jazz Messengers he had his own unique sound, wonderful!
Hi, Ken. A wonderful rendition. I was sitting at my piano in adoration. My father’s birthday is in August and he is quite the old timer and is a total jazz head. It’s June now, and I plan on learning this Horace Silver Piece. For the intermediate pushing advance level would you recommend this piece?
Yes I think this is an advanced- intermediate to advanced level. Playing the left hand in rhythm and then the right hand figure with the correct fingering is relatively difficult, I believe. I had to practice it, and I'd say my level is advanced. I'm no virtuoso.
@@KentHewittpiano88 it took me around a few months to play this masterpiece. as you said synching left and right hand takes time. I am not piano player actually but I ve been playing guitar for 31 years and my hands are already synched I guess.
Very nice! Makes me want to dig out the vinyl. Was that Blue note? I remember it was a long song possibly the whole side of the record. I used to listen to this song when I wanted to get real laid back. Thanks Kent!!--Kendall--
There's no such term as a b11...that's the major 3rd. But what you wrote is correct...it's a C dominant 7th with a b9 and b13... which is an augmented 5th, if you look at it in a basic way.
Kent Hewitt oh that's right, I forgot that a name already exists for that note (M3). So how would you call/write/spell out that chord that you played? Thanks for your prompt reply 👍😊

There's is so much beauty and clarity in everything he does, and his solos are so exceptional. Thanks for the compliment and I hope all is cool w/ you. Love you, bro!...
Each to his own. This is based on the composer's original concept. However, it might be fun to play it funky. (But Horace is already funky...it's just about the rhythm)
Very impressive! You are the extra 25% that I'm lacking! Super impressed....with everything you teach us. Michael DeStefano
Such a wonderful comment...love you, brother!
My all time favourite jazz tune, you have done it a great respect here, Kent!
Wow, I really love this comment....you just made my day, again!
