Theater Talk: Jennifer Holliday

- Actress Jennifer Holliday talks about her return to Broadway, playing in the Tony Award-winning revival of The Color Purple. Holliday also reminisces about appearing in the original production of Dreamgirls directed by her mentor Michael Bennett, beginning when she was 19 years-old.
She won the Best Actress Tony Award for Dreamgirls and became a star, but as she explains to us, the undertow from that heady experience led to years of struggle with depression and obesity. Eventually Holliday overcame those problems and dropping over 150 pounds (a weight loss she has sustained for more than 20 years), and she now continues her remarkable career, co-starring in The Color Purple as the lithe and sexy "Shug Avery."

Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

She is so humble.
God, how I love everything about Jennifer Holiday!
Just a beautiful interview done by real fans! I love Jennifer Holliday's honesty in all her interviews.
EXCUSE ME? but her speaking voice is completely contrary to her singing voice. Are you kidding
Jennifer Holliday is one of the greatest singers that hath ever sang...her voice also reminds me of Rachel farrell .....it is just too dam good.....superior to most singers....Jennifer Holliday....her voice is self taught....would you believe...just like Streisand .
Jennifer holiday’s Voice is way beyond her years....it was twice her age of 21....at the time...over the years her voice is still just as great.
She is soooo blessed.
I like that she mentions La Streisand and that she learnt from her how to hold notes and act a song.
We love you Jennifer. You are such a great, and passionate speaker!
Excellent episode.

"YOUR VOICE". BRAVA!!!
As for beloved ETHEL Merman, she could have never been able to do your role in Dreamgirls, but YOU can and should do ROSE in Gypsy!!!
Those words were "right on"!!!
So much history...beautiful, funny, enlightening, insightful, retrospective...LOVE IT... thank you Ms Jennifer Holiiday for your brilliance, emotion and raw talent...! :-)
Jennifer’s voice is also very refined a...classy and Operatic....Jennifer can sing any style almost
.....real deep natural talent and gifted.
You "nailed" her essence. Even when she was younger and heavier she heard the unkind words directly aimed at her -- she persevered -- she taught us a Lot!!
great great insights!
What a genuine, lovely woman. A true legend.
This is soooooo revealing!

She Can Sing!!!!!?????
This was awesome. She is amazing
Best interview - she went into way more detail about her life and the creation of Dreamgirls here.
Aw but jenifer hudson in the first cast of the revival...
When I first heard this song, my brother bought the 45 to play on our record player. I just could not believe someone had a voice like that. She was just bigger than life. I was literally in AWE of Jennifer Holiday ..and I still am. She's a truly gifted, outstanding and remarkable vocalist!
I don't know why, but the blonde lady's comments irritated me a little throughout the conversation
I too had questions, I thought I was being too hard on the lady, but apparently You heard what I heard. However, Miss Holiday never broke stride -- answered the questions and continued on!!
Very very nice interview. ❤
J! The best.
