Aston Villa Presentation - 21st Aug 1981

The Aston Villa team and manager, Ron Saunders, were guests of the Midlands Soccer Writers at their monthly luncheon at Villa Park. The Aston Villa Chairman, Ray Matts, presented Ron Saunders with a framed photograph to mark their league championship winning season. This is followed by an excerpt from the acceptance speech made by Saunders.

Interesting time-capsule! Saunders must be talking about the change from 2 points of a win to 3 for the forthcoming season. And for all the talk of him being stern/dour etc. Ron comes across quite charismatic here.

@ 0-30 Ron looks across to Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner who would himself become
Villa boss three years later. Those attending would have been astonished at that future appointment.
I wonder why Doug made such a risky choice - no top flight experience whatsoever.
