Installation of Swisstrax Ribtrax & Rubbertrax Flooring at OGHQ

- Опубліковано 3 вер 2017
- 6 other OG members and I installed 1250 square feet of Swisstrax Ribtrax and Rubbertrax at my garage facility. All total, it took us 6 hours from start to finish.
This is how pricing works. OG Members get 20% off MSRP and Free Shipping. Ribtrax is $4.95 per square foot and Rubbertrax is $5.95.
Shipping costs a crap ton for this stuff, so that's a substantial cost I'm eating.
Ribtrax cost with OG discount works out to $3.95 shipped to your door. Rubbertrax is $4.95 Each tile is 15.75" x 15.75." That equates to 1.7227 sq. ft. per tile or $6.80 per tile. I hope that make sense.
To give you an idea the floor in this video cost a total of : 115 sq. ft. Rubbertrax at $4.95 and 1135 sq. ft. Ribtrax at $3.95
$569.25 + $4483.25 = $5052.50.

Matt, thank you for this video. I've been debating for a year how to handle my garage floor, and this info showing the ease of install, sturdiness, cleanliness, etc. helped to make a final decision in my mind. Kudos as well on passing along a good price on the product to the OG community.
Yeah man. This is a really viable option.
Looks great Matt and love the space you have there. Good luck with it
I've got same flooring after the winter I vacuum up the heavy sand deposits and then wash the floor with an old fashioned cotton mop and mop bucket using ONR 256:1. Ends up looking like new again!!
Your garage is straight up goals
Learned a lot watching this. I’m new to the channel and just joined the FB group. Ready to step my garage game up. I do have a suggestion on how to eliminate the dirt that falls between the Swisstrax perforations since you probably don’t want that to build up over time. Use a high powered central vacuum with a commercial sized floor brush for cleaning large areas. It will pull every bit of dirt, dust, debris from under the tiles. I’m co-founder of a central vacuum company so I can assure you this will get the job done with ease.
Matt, this is the first long video I've watched all the way through in a while. Nice floor.
Thanks.
This install came out so good! Makes such a huge difference!
You can also mark it the way you would ceramic tile, its much faster. Lay full tile one row down than use another against the wall and overlay the tile and mark it. It will match the wall perfectly.
Just NOW watching this video and im already liking this idea of them. Seeing yours and Adam LZ's setup is super ideal for everyday use. Living in Ohio and dealing with ALL 4 seasons is a pain in the butt to maintain my garage (even though its always clean). DEFINITELY worth me considering the purchase soon! #greatcontent 🙏
You coming to Esoteric on Friday?
Obsessed Garage Mann i would. Ill be in Pittsburgh for an Art & Design show that day.. (Sucks) when I seen that youll be in Ohio, i was super pumped to make it there! Lol. From that place to my house in Youngstown is 2 1/2 hours away. Sigh. Have fun coming here my guy and ill DEFINITELY be tuned in on the next few vids!! #salutefromOhio #dialed #bigfan
Awesome review!!! And to think I was trying to decide between racetrac and epoxy and flakes!! Lol 😆...ill do racetrac after this review!!
That looks so good!
thanks for the vid and pricing as well! thinking about doing something, just not sure yet. my initial thought was just two individual lines per car x 2 cars (length wise), but might look goofy. i don't think i want my entire garage covered.
Looks Awesome great job !
Looks great!
I'm bummed I couldn't make it, I ended up having food poisoning the next morning from eating out the night before.
Looks so good Bro!
Although I am tolerable to the idea of having dirt and dust and debris fall underneath the Swisstrax, I don't think you should have it in the restroom. Unless, of course, you sit down to pee! Imagine having pee pee splashes around the toilet and unable to wipe it off and let the pee pee dry up on and inside the swisstrax!
I'll just spray it down. It will be fine.
mmmm, this is tempting. ill be moving to new home next year and 20x20 garage doesn't seam that bad in pricing.
Very cool system. OG viewers are simple the best.
When I get my floor installed I won't clean it for 6 months.
I'll tape my garage into two sections and only vacuum the one side at the end of 6 months.
I then will lift up tiles from both the vacuumed side and the non vacuumed side and show you how easy it is to clean under swisstrax.
Do you guys not pick up mats at home when you vacuum or mop? or do you just sweep and broom around them and call it a day?
Instead of a TV put a Obsessed Garage poster between your cabinets.
The garage with Swisstrax look awesome!
Or play the logo on the T.v.
Stay safe, Matt!
Hey , did I miss the video explaining the purpose of this new space? , I was expecting progress on the at house garage.
I was wondering the same thing. I must have missed it also
27:05 Thank you for that. I was wondering about that.
One idea for jack stands is cutting a 2x10 or 2x8 in squares, then using those under your jack stands.
I'd suggest marking the tiles that are over the floor drains. Incase those drains need to be opened for cleaning. or put 1 red tile over the drain grate.
You can easily see the drain through the ribs of the tile, no mistaking the location.
I couldn't help but notice how the stability connections at the back are sagging, as a engineer it worries me.
Matt - How does the Swisstrax hold up to minor fabrication, i.e. grinding, welding, etc? Does Swisstrax have specifications for these types of applications?
My friend AdamLZ has been doing some insane stuff in his garage, and they are doing well. But I'd probably want an area without them for heavy duty stuff.
I just pulled up Swisstrax floors after 2 years of frustration. Pulling in to driveway at an angle and having tiles break loose was the last straw. The edge pieces only last a year then need to be replaced, vacuuming never got all the dirt. Replacing store bought epoxy with granite epoxy I saw Larry install. Tile cutter lives in attic for eternity.
Larry's floor failed in 2 weeks.
yeah my guy gave me some lifetime blah blah. I will keep the tiles in case its worse. you ever have problems with them disconnecting when you drive in garage at a slight angle?
how fast are you pulling into the garage? @@wildcat50nc47
The problem I have with flooring like Swisstrax and others similar is that when using jack stands, it dents and eventually ruins the flooring. If you actually work in your garage with floor jacks and jack stands, I don't think its the best option. It's more for a showroom garage application.
Don't get me wrong... Swisstrax is beautiful. But if you're having to replace dented/damaged flooring constantly, it doesn't make sense financially.
Jack stands are about the only thing that causes a problem. If I was wrenching a ton or welding, I'd probably just leave the concrete alone.
How would this tile do with woodworking and sawdust?
Looks great Matt. That cutter was the bees knees. Just think of all the plastic shavings you would had to of cleaned up if you used a table saw. I have a very similar 2 car tandem garage at my house. It's roughly the same sq feet as this. I made the mistake of epoxying it but now regret it. I'll definitely be covering it up with Swiss tracking in the future.
Yeah epoxy seems like such a win, win, but it rarely works out.
If you don't mind explaining, why would you regret epoxying?
HosteM prepping is everything with these type of floors coatings . The average homeowner with a decent finished garage floor can do themselves 85-90% of a pro-installer. Reason being, there are tricks to the trade. I did my floor by the book and I'm finding failure-to- adhere bubbles that eventually peel off leaving bare concrete. The use of the paint chips can be tricky. Too much and there's unwanted build up. Too little and well it just looks fugly. And lastly, getting several kits to match in the same shade is next to impossible.
Thanks for the input.
We blasted our concrete before professionally laying the epoxy without paint chips and I must say that's the way I saw many dealers/garages in the EU operate. Using kits may result in a different results, don't have experience with them.
If you would be able to redo your garage, would you still prefer Swiss (or equivalent) to a professional epoxy-job?
Savagegeese has a great video about garage flooring and his solution seems ideal. Sure you have to blow out the dirt or sweep it but the floor is incredible.
Quartz top coat is cool and if it works, it works really well. But you have a high probability of failure.
Would you ever put swisstrax directly on concrete? Or would you always put a coating/epoxy/etc on first
I almost always put it directly on concrete. I wouldn't worry about sealing or painting the floor unless it was already done.
What about using stools and creepers on this material?
They work just fine.
Where did you purchase that tool to cut the tiles?
How does seriously heavy equipment with little wheels roll on this material? Does it get caught up in the grooves?
Anything short of a few thousand pounds on small wheels rolls fine.
What's the type of cutter you are using? Is it just a tile cutter that I could rent from Home Depot?
Won't this collect lots of dust under the swisstracks, I got allergies to dust , but I know that once the dust settles under the tile it won't get kicked up again, right?
You are correct. Dust disappears.
Great man
the way you put this down... OMG I've never seen someone make so much extra work for themselves.. you also say a mallet isn't necessary, just use your hand.. then 2 minutes later complain that your hands are hurting.. LOL
Not sure if it has been asked already but, how does a creeper roll around on the Swisstrax?
Yes, no problem.
Question, if I have a flaky beige colored garage floor, previously done with bad “big box” store paint. Should I paint it so you can’t see the ugly beige paint through the tiles?
I wouldn’t. You won’t notice the paint much under it.
Obsessed Garage thank you
Are you ready for Irma? May God be with you guys for those in it's path
Will the grey tile show tire marks ? Great video
Matt an interesting video would be your hurricane prep for Irma. Stay safe!
Epoxy chip flooring with Swisstax on top of that. Got all the bases covered. Savage.
Ha, ha... I was thinking the same thing.
Looks great! I'm also part of "Team Slate Grey and Black," in my garage.
the floor looks great in the main garage space, but two concerns - 1) it seems an office chair would not roll well on that floor, and 2) it also seems the swisstrax under the toilet will be forever unclean...
Chair will roll fine.
Matts love affair with SwissTrax is real. I stole his ideas from his original garage at prior home. I went with pearl grey and black in my 4 car garage. Love it. Guys (and gals) who visit really like it. Also put in saber cabinets in silver. They are affordable and very sturdy. Hell, sort of a copy cat. Bought a Shelby Gt350 before he did. Just sold it, take delivery of a GT3 in November.
Ha, ha... Great minds think alike.
This would be great for my wood shop.
How come you didn't use rubbertrax in the office? Are the ribtrax better in that application or is it just aesthetics i.e. you didn't want a black floor in there?
Chairs don't roll very well on the Rubbertrax. It's a bit too soft.
hey matt, love the idea of swisstrax in my own 2 car garage, but as a 20 year old student 2 grand plus is alot to dish out. have any ideas for a cheaper alternative? i need about 480 square feet of flooring.
I would just leave it bare concrete if I were in your shoes.
Obsessed Garage ouch. you sound like my father
Matt, do you think the rubber tiles would be good for playing ping pong?
No, I don't think that would work very well.
Love the new space Matt! Are you going to put a lift in there as well? I'm thinking of putting one in my new garage soon!
I think so.
I dislike epoxy/polyurea flooring. Smelly, outgassing, questionable installers, lack of curing, long cure time, tire marks, slick when wet, those odors. Plastic flooring is just so much better. I always wondered why they put those stupid chips in....it's just visual clutter. Plastic is nice because it's modular and removable, and you can spot-replace tiles as-needed. You can take it with you if/when you move as well.
This install came out great! I love that Swisstrax allows rental of the large cutter that can accommodate those larger 15.75" tiles. I bought a 13" cutter which works for 12" tiles but I'm not sure how I'm going to cut the 18" tiles I have (I'm installed Racedeck). The price on a guillotine shear is outrageous too....$600-800 easily if you buy something good. Shipping is probably pricey for the shear but cheaper than buying one, and it's not like I would use a shear beyond flooring installation.
You don't see the dirt but it's there!
What jack lift is that in the beginning? Looking to get a new one and yours looks great! Glad I’ve stuck with you since the beginning. Loving the obsession!!
I think you are talking about my cheapo Pittsburgh jack from Harbor Freight.
I was thinking about how to spruce up my garage once the inside/outside reno's are done.. You just gave me the right idea.. I think I can lay these down myself..What are you thoughts on DIY Matt? I should mention I rank myself somewhere between 4-5 on a scale of 1-10 Handy man skills matrix.
I'm probably a 5-6 out of 10, and I think it's easy. So you'll be more that capable of doing it. You may need to buy and extra few tiles for screw ups, but it's not bad.
Obsessed Garage Thanks for the quick response
Matt, imagine having to do this all by yourself! It would literally take 40 hours lol... Glad to see you having a group of friends supporting you and being there for you. Hope these guys can be your life long friends on this earthly journey
The crazy about me is that I was originally thinking I didn't want to be bothered with having other people around. Then I came to my senses and made this fun instead of daunting by including others.
Oh, by the way, are you still going to build a garage on your property with lifts and all? Or are you going to just continue leasing this space indefinitely? Sorry for asking, but I may have missed a couple of your videos where you may have addressed this.
I think the tiles themselves don't look really that great, but adding a different color edge is really what makes the whole thing pop.
does this mean that you put the garage project on the side for now ? Or are you still trying to make it happen soon ?
Long story, but I'm working on doing something different.
Hi Matt. Another awesome video!! Is that just a run of the mill tile cutter that guy was using to cut the squares? Do you an affiliate link by chance?
It's a carpet tile cutter from Bullet with a 16" blade. They are about $800.
Everyone complaining about the floor holding dirt, but I'm more concerned that each tile would take 5 minutes with a table saw. HAHA! I think I'd be faster with that than the fancy cutter.
I hate the idea of dirt and debris just hanging out under Swisstrax. Sure, you don't see it, but you still know it's there.
So vacuum it.
Obsessed Garage way but what if your allergic to dust like me
@@SergeCanFixIt You can always wear a respirator.
@@SergeCanFixIt Most people use this flooring are in the automotive industry not a wood shop. The dust build up is not that bad and using a vacuum every now then seems to do a good job. At the end of the day I still have a cheap box fan with a ai rfilter ziptied to it running over head.
I have a rock wall in the back half of my garge so I have chalk dust floating everywhere.
Looks great, I really feel having the bathroom done was a mistake. Will always smell like piss in there..
What are your thoughts on Diamondtrax Matt? Or better off to just go with what you consistently use?
I really dislike those tiles. They click and clack and eventually warp a bit. They are nothing like Ribtrax.
Obsessed Garage oh great I just ordered the Diamondtrax ughhh
Why use the rubbertrax under the heavy tool boxes/cabinets. I would think u would want the hard plastic under all that weight.
Looks really good though. Great work.
TheLoopmeister oh. Didn't realize that. Thanks for clearing that up.
Dude, That epoxy looks good to me, nothing wrong with plastic flooring but why would you spend the extra money?
your 'crew' worked really well putting that together, but did anyone get a trapped finger with all those feet stomping around
I though this space was just a short term interim rental until your Garage is built. Seems a bit silly to install flooring, cabinets, etc in someone else's building. What am I missing??
It took 6 hours to install. It's not a big deal.
because he could pick these up and reuse them in the big garage? (obviously after ordering more...
So, how do you clean it? Vacuum?
Yep, vac will suck everything right up through it.
What would it cost to get this from you if I have roughly a 620 ft three car garage since an epoxy guy told us a little over a thousand to do it but we're still deciding
Andrew Lyon this may help, my garage is 325 sq ft and Swisstrax was a bit over $1000
$3.95 per sq. ft. Epoxy for a little over a thousand sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Decent epoxy should cost $5 a sq. ft.
I missed something. Is that a new garage for your store ? A new garage in your home ? An office with employee and sell stuff from the store ?
I'm not sure what this is going to be. It is a really cool facility across the street from my wealth management office. I may become my shipping headquarters, but I'm unsure about that as well. Right now it's a place to store my cars.
Love the silver rib Trax. Grey is a nice color but I find it darkens the garage to much
Hey Matt, how come I can’t find the rubber trax on your store?
They stopped making it about 2 years ago.
OH MAN! where was that shirt when i ordered my other one? lol... that one is clean :) I'll be looking at garage floors here soon, we just poured the concrete slab a few days ago.
Anyone that knows me can vouch for how particular and obsessed I am when it comes to automotive, detailing, and doing things right. I thought about my channel two years ago when we purchased the land. I discovered Matt's channel about two months ago and reached out to him about my channel idea. Matt and I are cut from the same cloth. I don't think my channel with 74 subscribers is any threat to Matt's 100k+ subscribers. And in good faith I even purchased a tshirt and made a video of it. What have you purchased?
FreekCraft3 also, the intro on my channel is custom and I created the sound effects. I do voice overs in Austin Texas and I'm guessing you'd probably tell me to pick another name other than Austin voice talent right? :) take care, enjoy the videos and support your UA-cam creators when you can.
Name AND logo. As Matt says "dont be a loser"
Capp my logo is a house, not a gear. Just like Houston auto, Houston glass, Houston tile, they share a common word, and use the popular Texas star or flag in their logo. You should support UA-cam creators not bash them. We are watching the same channel so obviously we have the same passion. I bet we could geek out about scoobies, I have owned 3 STi's. Take care.
i guess my doctor swings off matts nuts too because he diagnosed me with OCD?
Must of just started watching after this place. Don’t remember it at all.
Put a pad behind your wash bay for your trailer.
if you;re actually wrenching on stuff a darker floor is not as good IMO. I like the light reflection off epoxy
Where can I find the rubbertrax? I cant seem to find it, has it been discontinued?
Sadly, they quit making it about 3 years ago.
The cutter makes it soooo much easier!
Agreed.
Obsessed Garage did you buy one or did they lend it? Nice to know if there is one local. 👍
I bought it.
Obsessed Garage good to know!
How far away is this garage from your home?
7 miles
I know epoxy is no good, but what about urea/poly floor coating?
I had that in my last house. Polyurethane is really visible. It doesn't self level like epoxy does.
Sorry guess i brainfarted. it would be polyurea or polyaspartic. in Minnesota i have heard nothing but good, but i am skeptical.
I wouldn't put either in my garage. It's porcelain or this.
Good to know. Thanks for the insight.
Matt, did you buy this property? Or you are renting it?
It's leased.
What is wrong with the epoxy floor?
Epoxy is for grandmas.
Have you thought about moving your wealth management office to the OGHQ Office?
Ha, ha... I've thought about it.
Thoughts on Swisstrax versus Racedeck?
Racedeck is unacceptable to me. Swisstrax is the minimum. It is 3/4" thick versus 1/2". That makes a big difference in how it feels when walking on it.
Unacceptable in what way? Curious? Have you ever actually had it?
When you walk on it, it feels like plastic. I haven't had it and wouldn't ever buy it. Swisstrax was a bandaid in my last house due to the epoxy mess I needed to cover up. It turned out to be decent enough to keep using it. It's not worth a few hundred bucks savings to get the inferior Racedeck.
How dare you speak ill of epoxy!
#junk
Obsessed Garage I dunno matt, posting "#junk" seems like mediocre talk to me
Lol just commented to go watch your video on this topic. Clearly I glazed over this comment.
Would you consider renting your cutter Matt? I plan to order some tiles soon for my own garage. I live 3 hrs from you btw
I need a new blade for mine. It's toast. The cutter would only save you 30 minutes versus a table saw.
Obsessed Garage no worries boss man. Thanks for the reply! Will be ordering some from your page when I’m financially ready. Will be going the same slate grey and rubber jet black as yours.
Matt,
I searched for YEARS on how I wanted to finish my Garage floor. I looked at the product you are using, similar ones, etc and after extensive research, looking at friends garages, etc, I settled on what I think is simply the best! I do not know how to send you pictures so if you tell me how I'd like to show you my garage floor. The floor you are installing might be good in FL but in the Northeast with leaves, snow, mud and ice everything gets stuck and trapped below - not good!
It is NOT what you are calling an Epoxy floor with added speckles - I agree with you that stuff sucks! My garage was professionally done, approximately 3/8" of concrete had to be removed from the existing floor (as the new floor product is about that thick), and took about a week to be completed. It is a combination of Adhesives, Quartz and a patented epoxy that you can not buy anywhere else. The floor I have in my Garage is what they use in Fire Houses, Police Garages, Hospital Basements, Jails, etc. It comes in about 20 colors, is non slip, can be finished in gloss, semi gloss, dull, etc. Since it is Quarts it has texture to it and is very non slip! I've had it for 8 years now and there is not a scratch, stain or crack. If I spill gasoline, oil, tranny fluid, etc. it will NOT soak in, not stain at all, and simply just wipes up with a paper towel. It is bullet-proof!! If interested, let me know and give me a way to send you pic's.
what is it called
Why would stuff under the tiles not be good? I don't understand why people think dirt under a plastic tile matters.
You can also run a vacuum over the tiles and it will pick up the meaningful dirt/debris if that worries you.
Maybe in Florida it's not an issue but here in the Northeast with the mud, snow, ice, salt, leaves and sand it sure does matter - at least to me. There would be a huge mess under he tiles!
Bobby W I live up north and I'd love to have this flooring system, namely because it catches leaves and whatnot between the "ribs" before they can actually blow into the garage. Snow and salt simply fall into the cracks and can be vacuumed up. There's a tool that lifts the tiles so you can clean under them. I'd rather lift the tiles and clean under them every now and then rather than look at a polished floor full of salt and stains.
Yes, it's great in Florida, but it's actually more valuable up north.
👍
Why would you put flooring in a property you don't own?
I think you already know the answer.
😀 Yes, correct.
Great vid.. will you ship internationaly ?
Hmm... good question. I'm not sure about that.
In the UK there is not much competition to this, just stupid gym style matting etc and a real lack of reviews/support such that this video provides. I can see people a good few orders from here.
I wouldn't put this stuff around a bog. If you need to mop up a 'spillage' then
you're not gonna get it clean unless you lift the tile.
g2macs I guess I'm wrong.....all wrong
Unfortunately due to a badly trained Collie pup, I am now an expert in mopping up pee.......
I don't think it was a good idea for the bathroom you have guys with bad aim and the idea of piss just under that stuff grosses me out and the smell
Pop Culture 101 lift up tile, clean, replace.
Was thinking the same. Lol
@@JoshuaGriffing That is a great idea but lets be real, will people actually do it?
Grandma sparkles, lol
Hi Matt, i emailed you guys for a quote but no one's have return my email.
My self worth was attached to epoxy flooring. But then it flaked off.
Ha, ha... You know most people attach their product decisions to their self worth.
Would definitely not put this product around a toilet. That's gross. But the garage floor looks great.
Ohh comon tell people the only way to clean that floor is to take all tiles out u cant power wash good luck taking all tiles out to get dirt out lol every single time i trown mine in garbige after 6 months
What?
Epoxy floor on my spotless garage is perfect, why would I put plastic grate that holds the dirt, then to clean up you can't unless you tear it up!!! Stupid a mess for sure. Sorry MATT totally disagree.
Wrong, all wrong.
Could you wash your car on top of this?
Yes, it has channels underneath for drainage.
@@ObsessedGarage that's awesome. Have you tried it? I saw a few videos with just water tests, but no suds. You think that'd make a difference?
Yes, I've done it many times. It works great with drains and sloped floors.
