It's always exciting to see an old Broadway cast album come to life. I'm surprised they allowed the lyric "Hell [a word not said on TV in the 1960s unless you were talking about the alternative to heaven], they haven't won the war."
If you want to change the world, change yourself, said Gandhi. the great changes in history can begin with a simple change in attitude: when we change our attitude towards life, life and the world also change. A great lesson.
Several years ago, someone graciously uploaded a rough copy of this performance. I always wondered if the original video survived. And now, thanks to the ED SULLIVAN SHOW UA-cam Channel, we have this treasure. BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS, despite its superb original cast recording, is often dismissed as a mediocre show. Well, at least these five minutes prove that there were thrilling moments and scenes. Also, we are lucky to have at least one version of Ulla Salient singing LOOK FOR SMALL PLEASURES on a Sunday afternoon show devoted to BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS. And what a character the great Robert Preston created with his Ben. In Preston's skilled hands, Franklin is determined, passionate, warm, and humorous. I understand why ENCORES stays away from even considering a week's run of this show because where could they find a man as talented as Preston to do the job. Hmmmm. Should we be calling David Hyde Pierce? Just wondering. Thanks you, ED SULLIVAN SHOW channel!
I remember seeing him in 'Music Man' and thinking, wow, he really got into that character! Then I saw him in 'Victor/Victoria' and thought oh, he's just always like that. :) This confirms it, just Preston being Preston. But I like him. Poor quality production for Ed Sullivan, was this a tape of a rehearsal or something?
Here's to kinescope. God-awful visual AND sound quality. Yet, it manages to preserve some great moments that would otherwise be lost to history. Look up DARK SHADOWS and HULABALOO, 2 other TV programs with similar issues. Most of DS was preserved on videotape, with several episodes saved via kinescope. HULABALOO, unfortunately, can chalk up their kinescope issues to an infamous fire at Universal Studios back in the late 2000's.❤
I miss my brother Jerry, he was so talented...
The Music Man!
!😮😯😮😮😊😊👏
Never Knew Professor Harold Hill dabbled in Electricity and Government (!)
He will always be Professor Harold Hill to me. 😊
