I keep finding garden lights on the side of the road. Especially in spring. Just found another that has a 5252F IC. From what I understand. It should have a internal diode or some protection to ensure current from the battery doesn't go back into the solar panel, wasting the batteries charge. That was my issue with the first panel I found. I removed the LED since I only want it to charge my nimh cells. Hopefully I can just leave it in my window to do its thing.

Nice, good luck. a diode would work but it will drop the voltage by 0.7 volts which is probably too low unless you use 2 panels.

@@KiwiMaker If I find that these IC's work well. They're stupid cheap for a 10 pack. I'll probably get some for future roadside panels I find.

That's not a crappy panel. Looks like glass. The crappy ones are those slightly larger ones covered with epoxy. They look pretty at first but only a year or two later they have yellow cracks. I know because I'm a painter and see the crap all the time. They look ugly, almost opaque, and so I apply a little clear stain on them (just for kicks, and to see all the solar cell damage). That makes them transparent again, at least until the wood stain ages.
But the glass ones, maybe they go bad too (but can't tell unless I stay till dark) 😄
I imagine the glass to have the PV material sprayed on and that it should be less efficient. It looked like only 3 "cells", for 1.5v. If correct, then we could actually use only 3 cells in series to charge up the batteries, I mean battery. It's a 1.2v nimh or nicad. The first is okay, the nicad if BAD for environment because cadmium is like, well, we're not even supposed to touch it like we can the other battery elements.
Anyways, I think we need at least 4 solar cells in series because the Chinese block diagram (of the innards) showed a diode, which must drop at least a quarter volt or so, directly to the battery from the solar panel.
Somewhere, it said to use a 2.5v (5 cell panel). But others said 2v (and shown the 4 cell panel in their videos).
Ya, I'm just checking things out before I go out buying thousands of the little chips (I believe they're only 6¢ each). 😁

1:11 YX8018 has common + ve and Battery +, and -ve is 3, not GND (YX8018: 1.LX, 2. GND, 3 - VE, 4. BAT +). Seems you add connections for QX5252F and show IC as YX8018 (ok it shows XY8018 but i can't find solar IC like that).
