No,it didn't happen in Parliament. So yes,you are mistaken.
Not parliament, senate estimates....kangaroo court at best to try & shame each other or dig up dirt that might stick.
A Royal commission is binding as is ICAC testimony.
@@S.M.E.A.CThe senate estimates committee is an official organ of parliament presided over by current sitting members of the senate. It is not an official session of the Senate on the Senate floor but it exists to investigate and inform their fellow senators of their findings on matters pertaining to their inquiries, and it operates when Parliament is in session. It is very much a part of parliament, so no he was not mistaken at all
Calm and professional. Exemplary embodiment of what senators should demonstrate through their conducts
I think the point is, that the Man who was, as you say, (and I believe it) the very "exemplary embodiment" of the kind of "professionalism" that you, and ALL Australian Taxpayers would love to see, was not, nor had he ever been, a Senator in the Australian Federal Parliament, he was merely a Senior Public Servant, being grilled, under oath, no less, about the potential "esoteric" meaning of symbols on a bloody T-shirt, and just batting away every question as though he was Donald Bradman in his prime.
Well done my white brother, very well done!! But you just watch your back from now on, my brother, because these buggers have bloody LONG memories, and they won't be letting this just "go through to the keeper"
Do you mean the Natwits or the public servant they were grilling?
Couldn't get past 7mins of this. It is so desperately disappointing when so many are suffering with very real problems.
I see your point, but, when senior public servants appear to project an overt political message to the staff that they oversee, why is it wrong to ask them to explain themselves?
@@HighlanderGeoff Their questions are idiotic. A public servant, including a secretary, are allowed to express personal, non-party endorsing opinions. If there was a problem, then as he says, they should report it to the Australian Public Service Commissioner. They would get politely told that their complaint had absolutely no merit whatsoever, and rightly so. They just acted like absolute fools and partisan hacks, the exact thing they were trying to imply he was. Shameful and crass grandstanding that is a waste of parliamentary time and taxpayer money.
@@HighlanderGeoff OK so did you even consider how these LNP senators got this information? There was no official complaint made, no unofficial and illegal complaint to the media, instead a public servant has decided to leak information about what their boss was wearing directly to senators of a pollical party, you couldn't get MORE political than that! The only public servant who needs to be questioned here is the one who told these two about the shirt. If they honestly had an issue with it there are so many official ways to report it, but instead they decided to MAKE IT massively political as a hit job on their boss. It works both ways, you can't claim someone wasn't being apolitical by going crying to a particular party! You put in a complaint to the system and then it would be investigated internally, you know, before politicians get involved and turn it into a waste of everyone's time.
This is also why you can't just surprise accuse people. To go through the correct channels means you get a chance to prepare evidence and arguments, not just have it spung on you by these two lemons who likely spent even LONGER working out this "argument" of theirs instead of doing something useful like actually presenting the people who elected them, who likely give ZERO shits about a APS member wearing a tshirt which could be misunderstood by some conservative with a lack of history lessons.
Full respect to the public service guy who showed intellect, respect and patience. Not so, to his inquisitors, who showed how argumentative, condescending and uninformed they are, as people, let alone parliamentarians. I understand that these people live in a bubble but that was bizarre questioning.
It's this sort of non-sense that makes me think, "I should have a run to be a senator. There's no way I could be as vacuous as these people."
I have had serious thoughts about that myself when I see ALP and Greens members getting the same slaps in other hearings. Particuarly Penny Wong fielding really bad faith questions about the court ordered release of detainees that then caused unfortunate issues that the previous government had made no effort to resolve PRIOR to that result being handed down by our highest court.
I have always been frustrated by the fact that conservatives here and in my home country have lost any semblance of honesty when conducting such horrid attacks. You could see Mackenzie squirm trying to get a gotcha every time this guy clearly explained what was needed to be done were the issue a genuine concern and Canavan as always is disregarding what was said and inserting his own words into the record in an attempt to smear people who have worked hard for multiple departments.
That said being a senator has never been harder I feel as the voting public is getting so disenfranchised by many issues including Gaza and cost of living and if it hadn't of been for my wife I likely would have worked to stand as a conservative. To be clear I would hold a socially progressive yet fiscally conservative view (hard to explain but I get the need for small government IF it is done in a measured well managed way but also fight and want to fight for progressive ideals such as proper housing and education.).
I saw this at the time… disgusting. With all the questions that could have been asked look at the amount of time spent on a tshirt! That pair are a disgrace. I think Mr.Betts held things together well but his anger was palpable.. and rightly so.
What if it was that german symbol popular in the late 1930's on the tshirt or a hammer and sickel or a picture of pol pot!

What a disgusting line of questing and a waste of enquiry time.
It has to be said that ‘just a flag’ is different to a flag in a power fist. I wear union shirts with the power fist on them because it means union power.
He said what it represents, solidarity
Exactly! And even before the Black Power movement (which, to be perfectly clear, was and is a good cause that is still relevant even in Australia), that fist symbol was associated with the organised labour movement. It has a long history and tradition of solidarity among and between underrepresented groups of people. Naturally the Natwits are scared shitless of it.
You can't display political statements, unless it's a proud coal sticker in your laptop, where the cameras have to look when Canavan opens his lie hole.
He ran rings around those morons! Cannot believe how they thought they were onto something in their questioning, when the longer it went on, the dumber the secretary made them look!
Why didn't the department secretaries that were grilled during the robodebt commission have the same level of intelligence as this guy?
Simple; the robodebt perps had all done real harm and were on the hook for it. Mr Betts here just wore a cool shirt.
"We all loved the Clash and the Jam." DID YOU THOUGH? DID YOU??
I feel sick watching this......a public servant thumbing his nose at the Australian public's expectations for their paid employees

So what are they arguing here, that it's not a conservative value to have solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people? (seems about right to be honest) That having solidarity is somehow a partisan political issue?
These Senators are ridiculous and quite frankly are simply using Senate Estimates to grandstand and virtue signal in front of the cameras. As the gentleman said, if they actually have legitimate concerns they should raise those concerns through the proper channels..... but they haven't and they won't because they're just feigning concern for political advantage.

No wonder public servants get paid more than politicians. On this performance by the 2 senators. The public servant is so much smarter than either of them.🤭🤫🎃
Jim Betts is a legend
Pretty sure "conservatives" are amply represented both in parliament and the public service. Not sure you can say the same thing for indigenous Australians though.
Apparently, to conservatives, support for aboriginal Australians has become a "partisan" issue. If a "t shirt" that depicts solidarity for Australia's first peoples is so triggering to these reactionary dog whistlers, it's more indicative of their "politics" than the public servant who wore it.
Support for Aboriginal Australians that don’t want it? So he should wear a Vote No t-shirt just so everyone is fairly represented.

This is what our tax goes to! 😱 What a waste. Both having a lengthy discussion and not following protocols that he's agreed to when deciding what to wear. Incredulous!
