  • Special note: inert gas system and inert gas generator (IGG) are Different things
survivors may ask you to explain only if you are from tanker.
    Working:
    1. Exhaust gases enter the system through boiler uptake valve and then are sprayed with water in scrubber unit.
    2. Water cools the exhaust gases and also dissolves the impurities in exhaust gases
    3. This washing water is then drained to overboard ( in IG generator unit, in case of flame failure, the water is transferred to bilge holding tank)
    4. Two blowers are provided in the system to force the exhaust gases for transfer
    5. The flue gases are now analysed for oxygen content by oxygen analyse provided just before the deck water seal.
6.If O2 content is more than 8%, the flue gases are vented out to atmosphere through an air vent.
    7. If O2 content is 8% or less, the flue gases are passed to the deck water seal arrangement, which acts as non-return safety valve.
    8. A pressure vacuum valve (PV valve) is provided on discharge line, to release the excess pressure or avoid vacuum on the tank.
    9. This is a safety feature provided to avoid the collapse of the tank.
note that, PV valve is a separate thing and it is different. PV valve is placed on every cargo tank.
    10. for memory purpose, Breaker is big- electrical and there is only one breaker in the line (just like we have one breaker in our house)

In inert gas system, blower is after the scrubber tower,
and in inert gas generator, blower is the first in the system (line).
