I grew up in Miami, and am still here locally. I remember seeing so many of these on the road in the mid to late 80's here. Every "business man" if you catch my drift, owned one of these. They still look as good as the day I saw the first one.
I owned a W124 300E from '86 with a I6 engine. It was previously used as a taxi when I bought it, with almost 400.000 km (250.000 miles) on the odometer. It was still both super comfortable and quick, with a nice roar to it's engine. Mercedes engineers in the 80's truly were masterminds.
Just got the car that makes 15 year old me beyond happy, a 1984 500SEC. Haven’t enjoyed driving this much since I was 16 and got my license. A 6.0 is the holy grail for me. Maybe one day. But for now, I’m loving my old school Benz

The donar car was also lined up as well before filming started. Bob got his project completed for him. He wrecks W126 cars for parts as a side business

American import Mercedes is surprisingly different from European Mercedes. Most of the drivetrain is not interchangeable. Engine is different even though models on paper they’re same models. Gray market Mercedes were pain to fix. Now it’s lot easier thanks to internet. But ordering parts took long time and it was expensive to ship specific tuneup kits or brake parts from Germany. Front bumper on European one is smaller very weak ornament. While American Benzes could be used to push other cars. My dad worked on fixing Mercedes all his working life. Either you love them or hate hate fixing them. My dad hated, because Mercedes had to do everything its own way. Even though other part makes would cheaper. That makes fixing Benzes expensive if you’re not DIY Mercedes owner.
@ericquinn8578 AMG has made 2 official engines for the 500 SEC and none of them is 6.0L. I'm curious to get an explanation strictly for documentation purposes.
The 500 & 560 are the exact same block. Needs to bored out to 100mm bores. A 6ltre requires the 560 stroker crank/560 rods (500 rods too long) & custom 100mm pistons. 560 heads needed as bigger intake valves than gen1 500 heads & 560 heads have bigger intake bowl & flow better. Heads need to be worked as AMG did. AMG solid lifter cams or 560 300hp factory Euro cams (which AMG switched to when they became available from MB off thr shelf) The AMG 4 valve 3 piece sand cast heads were complex & had lots of issues + parts for them were NLA. Many cases of 4 valve head owners switching the engine back to 2 valve heads when workshops could not repair them.
# HAMMER TIME ref: an '86 E-Class Sedan fitted with an S-class engine, so technically the Legend began with the classic SMALL car fitted a BIG engine recipe, not a BIG Coupe with a BIG engine. this was also the recipe used for the original "Red Pig", that circa 1970 300 SEL Sedan fitted with a 6.3L V8 bored out to 6.8L. Deutschland's whole "claim to fame" (so their raison d'etre and gift to the Automotive world) was and still is the "Performance Sedan". also ref: Audi's S8 in Ronin circa 1998, BMW's G80 M3, etc.
A new SL is not the successor to this one though... The SL model existed in the 80's too. Not same as the SEC. Successors to the SEC was all models later called CL. GM:s 3,8 was a V6 Turbo. 200 hp. In Europe the 380SEC had 204 hp... Its pretty funny in Europe some verisons of the 560 already had 300hp. Didnt need to buy an AMG for that. I think the euro 6.0 2-valve had 330hp. And the 4-valve 385hp.
Zach come on bro hammers are not just the 4v m117 in 5-6.0l it can only be a w124. the e class that is all a hammer can be. I know that be you can ask the man who built them and will tell you hammers were only w124 with there dohc heads on whatever displacement. that is fact. the m117 beaten with a hammer still isn't a hammer unless its in a 300e,300ce or hodgie's s124 the wagon. only e class!!!!! hammer gets thrown around so much but it can only be the combo of those two things w124-m117 with the custom dohc heads. no disrespect but I blast everybody especially people who should know-like you. your still the best partner Matt could have.cheers
