It's similar to my language, Indonesian. The slang changes and as you say it would be different in different social groups... we call slang "bahasa gaul" in our language. But some people misunderstand about it... they can't differentiate between slang and daily language. In my language we also have formal and informal language, but we have slang too... and of course the slang is including informal one... but we can communicate in informal situation without using the slang.

Good: still use neat / nifty, avoid groovy and not familiar with tubular, dope or lit. Had to ask my son what he meant by Gucci last week.
