Using Abbe Koenig prisms is interesting as it also explains why the UHD models are longer and heavier than the HD Razors. This will also be the main difference that I was searching for between the HD and UHD models:
So whilst Abbe Koenig prisms are not as compact as the more commonly used Schmidt-Pechan design used in the HD, the big advantage of this design is that all surfaces on the Abbe-Koenig prisms reflect 100% of the light that hits them and thus they do not require highly reflective coatings, like the dielectric ones used on the HD models.
Abbe-Koenig prisms also have a longer focal length which I believe results in lower color & spherical aberrations than an equivalent level Schmidt-Pechan prism.

I make no secret of the fact that the Vortex Razor series and in particular the HD is one of my favorite binocular ranges of all time.
Indeed these 8x42 Vortex Razor HDs won the BBR binocular of the year award way back in 2012 and I have now had these ones as my own personal pair for almost a decade and still feel that it is one of the best binoculars that I have ever used.
As well as this, I also use this Vortex Razor as a high-end benchmark in many of my tests and it is one of the pairs that all others must aspire towards and it still remains one of my go-to instruments that I use almost on a daily basis.
HD to UHD
So I have to admit that it brought a slight lump in my throat when I discovered that Vortex Optics was introducing the new Razor UHD series that would replace these trusty Razor HD’s as their flagship range.
But I guess just by the fact of how long this binocular has remained at the top and the flagship model at Vortex, which has now grown to become one of the most respected binocular manufacturers in the world is a testament to just how good it is.
Therefore, having said all this, it stands to reason that the successor is going to have to be pretty special and has a lot to live up to.

My next thought was should I upgrade and get the new Vortex Razor UHD Binoculars or should I stick with these for just a bit longer?
So with that in mind, I have now done a whole bunch of research, contacted Vortex Optics and studied all their specifications and features very closely and in this video I am going to highlight what I believe are the most important things that you need to know before deciding if the new Vortex Razor UHD binoculars are the ones for you, how much better are they than the Razor HD, is the extra money worth it and if they are, which model is best suited to your needs.

Thank you very much for this review. As someone who walks around with my binoculars around my neck, the 10x42 Razor HD stood out as better weight-wise, but your review opened my eyes to the fact that the FOV is also much better with the HD than the UHD, so for all that extra money, it didn't make sense to pay more money for a bulkier binocular with less FOV. HD it is!

Excellent binoculars, very clear and bright image, the 18 increments of power make it an incredible binocular, I use them with a tripod to enjoy this new optics to the full, having it in my hands is very comfortable for its design, despite weighing 41.6 oz. I love these binoculars are powerful sharp and with a good chassis. Congratulations to the Vortex optics team, I recommend them 100%. they will make a good purchase.
Hello. Your review of the Vortex Razor series is outstanding and clearly covers everything on would need to make a highly informed purchase decision. I bought the 12x50 HD binos yesterday, having spent over an hour at the counter trying every single pair in stock. The $3600 Swarovski model had a flatter image, but was not as bright, and didn’t feel as good in my hands as the Vortex binoculars. I found the Razor UHD to have much more barrel distortion and more spherical aberration that the HD. I simply couldn’t justify the $900 price jump for a decrease in optical performance. I am a retired Artillery officer and I have carried and used binoculars my entire working life. I know what I like and what optical features I need. Thanks for your excellent reviews! PK
Which swaro did u compare to?
FWIW, I purchased the Razor HD 12x50 a few years ago and loved them immediately. The construction and optics are very impressive. Probably the best construction of any binocular out on the market -- even Zeiss, Leica and Swaro. I purchased the Razor HD 8x42 model but honestly had some weirdness with the optics. For whatever reason, the 12x50 model suited me best. I later sold the 8x42s and picked up the Leica UVHD+ 8x42 which is a very nice binocular. Its optics are super bright. The Razor HD 12x50 doesn't have the same level of light gathering but it's very close. I also own the Vortex Kaibab 20x56 HD and they're extremely good for a high mag binocular -- which I use primarily for Astronomical viewing. My budget won't currently allow me to pick up the Razor UHD but I'll definitely try to go and play with one at Cabelas.

Are the Razor 12x50 good without a trípod?
Hello Gustavo, yes I would say for most people a 12x50 binocular is fine to hand-hold. They are a little heavy for long duration observation, but most users are able to hold them still enough over shorter periods. Thanks - yes, most people always assume bigger .. or more powerful must be better, but it is definitely a "horses for courses" and there are many situations where an 8x is a better choice over a 10x
How do these compare to the updated HD model just below it the UHD line? Being interested in purchasing the HD and also,seeing your review on the GPO HD line are these in the same class optically and build quality.

I've heard some people say the Vortex Razor UHD binoculars are so good that they're indistinguishable from the Alphas in nearly every metric, and others say they're very good but a noticeable notch below Alphas. I guess it comes down to which is right for you personally. It seems upper level binoculars are becoming so refined that most any one of them would make most people very happy.
Hi Desertguy, yes I would agree with you. In my experience it is very hard, if not impossible to tell them apart in terms of the view. Vortex tend to go further with the accessories (like including a harness), whilst I guess some would argue that the more traditional alphas are better in other areas. So it just depends on your needs and preferences as to which is best for you.
Great review! I just picked up a set in 10x42 for hunting. I highly recommend buying them from Scheels. They will swap out for warranty claims in store so you don't have to deal with sending them in. These nockers amazing! Especially considering I upgraded from a crossfire.

Hi Mats - Yea, i have heard great things about the Diamondback in terms of 'bang for your buck'. and yes, I have tested an number of Swarovski SLC and EL binoculars over the years. Awsome review. The UHD will not be taking over the HD they will both still be available. The UHD are just their higher end model geared to compete with the alphas.

How are they compared to Swarovski and Leika binoculars (same 8x42 or near that)?
Jason, you suggested on your other video that if you have the 12x50 regular HDs that it’s worth it to upgrade to the new UHD’s. Is it really worth the extra $400-$500? I use them exclusively hunting with 25% tripod and 75% off hand.
Hi Nick, thanks for the question - Is it worth it? That is always a really tough question to answer as it really depends on how much you will be using the binoculars and how much you value that extra $400-$500. So, for example, Elon Musk wouldn't think twice about spending the extra cash to get the very best, but for most others, this is not a small amount of money. On top of this, with binoculars, it really is a case of diminishing returns. So at the lower end of the scale, the difference between a $25 binocular and a $400 one is truly massive, but the difference between high end and very high-end instruments is much less noticeable. So the "standard" Razor HD's are an excellent pair of binoculars and whilst the UHD Razors are an improvement, the difference is much, much smaller. I think the good thing to think about when making this decision is no matter which one you get, you can be happy in the knowledge that both are excellent... there really is no wrong choice here. So my advice is if you are worried about the extra money and you could put it to better use elsewhere or save it for a rainy day, then do that and go with the HD Razor. If you don't need that extra cash and there is plenty more where it came from.. (lucky you😜) ...and go for the UHD - I hope this makes sense and I hope it helps? Also just be aware of the downsides to the high 12x power vs a 10x - if you are unsure take a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/JlmQ8EjfITE/v-deo.html it is about 8x vs 10x, but the same principles apply. I'm a birder in the market for new binos. I love 10x42 and think I might like 10x50 more. Would you recommend UHD 10x42 or HD 10x50? Thanks so much! Love the videos!
Good question! Both of your choices are excellent binoculars, so there is not a completely wrong choice, but I would look at it this way: If you do a lot of your birding in low light (like at sunrise or sunset or in deep forests) then I would go for the 10x50 and it's better light gathering ability. Otherwise the smaller size and lower weight of the 10x42 maybe a better option in wide open spaces with good light.
Two thing in your review that don't match the sell sheets we just received from Vortex: the prisms are Abbe Koenig, which have only 3 reflections instead of the 5 in Schmidt Pechan, and should lead to better light transmission; and the close focus for the 42mm models is 3.3' (1m), which will please birders and bug people.

Looking for binoculars for an Alaska cruise. Thinking I’ll use them mostly from the room balcony. Vortex is a front runner on my short list but I am wondering if Image stabilized binocs (Canon) would be better in that situation. Opinions?
Hi Devin, yes, this could be a good use scenario for Image Stabilization binoculars. However, I am not sure how much movement you do usually get on the ship - obviously this depends on the size of the ship and the water and wind conditions (high winds also make you move) - So it depends. Viewing distances also tend to be longer, so the temptation is for higher magnifications, but the issue is this makes it harder to keep the image still. So here again IS would help, but it does increase the price. Vortex does a lot of hype to an extreme.
Purchased the Vortex 12X50 UHD binoculars. (don't tell my wife what they cost), "you already have binoculars". The included case is excellent, well padded and fits well except, as you noted, it is just a little short. Especially if the eye cups extended. What are your preferred case options? Yes you could say that, but I see these as being equal in quality and performance to both, so it just depends on your preference. It is not as if you are loosing out on quality with this very high-end binocular.
Hi - I live on the isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and get a lot of enjoyment from my binoculars - seem to use them in a similar way to yourself, bird watching and wildlife watching.
I wondered if you ever managed to do a proper review of the Vortex 8 x 42 UHD?
I`ve got a pair of the 8x42 HD which were faulty, so I sent them back to Vortex for repair under their lifetime warranty. i was told they couldn`t be re gassed, so would be sent a replacement pair. I was wondering whether to ask to pay the extra for the 8x42 UHD?
I`d be really interested to hear if you managed to check them out, and what you thought about them, and whether the UHD is worth paying the extra for?
Really enjoy your channel - I find binoculars a difficult but fascinating subject, and your down to earth common sense about them is brilliant and makes the subject easier to understand.

As to the question of is the extra money you pay for them worth it compared to the HD's? That is always a tough one to answer as it largely depends on how much you value that extra amount of money. What I can say is yes, they are generally better than the HD's, but not if you value size and weight as they are a fair bit larger and heavier. So it will also depend on your specific needs and requirements. The best way is to list your needs and see which range best matches them. Either way, I feel they are both excellent optics and so neither would be a bad choice. Hope this helps - let us know which you go for.

How would you stack these up against the Meostar B1 plus 15x56?

I'm torn between the 8x42 and 10x42. I know that the 8x42 uhd had a 420 ft viewing area at the full 8 power setting. But wouldnt it be the same in the 10x42 at 8 power? Is this true ?
Hi thanks for the comment.. i am not totally sure if I follow your question, so please forgive me if I have it wrong, but it seems like you think these binoculars have a variable magnification. These like most binoculars have a fixed magnification either 10x or 8x. The wheel is for focusing this magnification at different distances. Hope this makes sense.

Would you choose swarovski binoculars 8x42 over the vortex razor uhd 8x42?
Oogh tough question as I assume you mean the new Swarovski NL 8x42 as the EL comes in 8.5x42? But honestly, either way, it really depends on your needs and situation. Optically, I bet they will be very close (I have not yet used the NL Pure) , so things like the included and truly excellent bino harness you get with the Vortex UHD could swing it if that is important to you. Also the price difference - if that is important to you then there is a clear winner. Also take a look at the fields of view - if you need an especially wide one go with that etc. etc. So as is often the case, you cannot just say one is better for everything and everyone - it all depends!
The prisms are completely different between the HD and UHD so that is a big change.... incremental it's not because this changes everything.
I have a question about rangefinder binoculars. Is it possible to turn off the rangefinder feature?
Hi John, yes on the ones I have used you can do this - indeed the default option is off - they use batteries, so this ensures that they don't use them up when not needed.

Hi Jeff, I have used the 10x42 Canon IS at trade shows and the like, so yes I have tried them out but never fully tested or reviewed them. I’ve always been a fan of Canon as I have a suitcase full of Canon lenses for my Camera. If the L glass in the Binos is a good as their Lenses, would the quality of the optics be as good as the Vortex?
Hi, my general experience of the camera companies that make binoculars, especially the Japanese ones (Canon, Pentax, Fujinon, Olympus, etc.) is this: There is no question that within their intended price bracket, the level of optics and coatings is good, although they are generally on the more expensive side when compared to the competition. Where they often fall down on is on the accessories. as I guess they are just used to how it is in the camera world (Cameras don't usually come with accessories). Vortex's top-end binoculars like the Razor UHD and I think the HD have their optics made in Japan.. so could quite easily be in the same factories as the Camera brands! Also, I assume all use the very best Hoya glass... made in Japan although there is no mention of it.

In two high-end brands (Minox and Maven), I have been amazed at their 8x binos, and rather disappointed in their 10x of the same model... I love my new Vortex Razor 8x... just wondering if the 10x would also have the same drop-off in sharpness that I found in the Minox and Mavens?

@@Bestbinocularsreviews One more quick question if I may? Got any DIY suggestions for a center focus knob that has become too loose? Always seems to be the first thing to go wrong... I prefer a center focus that is somewhat harder to turn, and over time they always get too loose. Thanks!
@@allanjones2393 Hi Allan, none that I can really think of - if the mechanism has gone loose, the only way I can think of tightening it is to open up the binocular, which you most certainly don't want to do diy as you will break the seals and thus lose the waterproofing as well as the nitrogen/argon gas inside and thus also the fogproofing - have you contacted the manufacturers?
Question: do the HD 10x50 Razors work as well as the UHD 10x42 Razors in low light?
I can only speak in "theory" as I have not compared them, but with a larger 5mm exit pupil (www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/exit-pupil-06/) and still with an extremely high level of optics, I would say that the 10x50 Razor HD has every chance of producing an image that looks as bright, if not even brighter than the 10x42 UHD with it's smaller 4.2mm exit pupil when used in low light conditions.

Scratch the surface of a binoculars review and you will find...a marketer. Not long ago one could buy and enjoy one binocular, perhaps 8x30, and use it for practically purpose. Now, one "needs" a pair that is best for camping, another for birding, a third for hunting, a fourth for astronomy, indeed, a closet full of them.
It's called product differentiation, the same technique that now offers you 12 different versions of your favorite breakfast cereal.
Does the marketer approve of this?...

Why vortex doesn't make astronomy binoculars which has 25x to 30x magnification??
Good question! But I guess every company has an area or niche where they specialize in. Even so it would be nice to see what Vortex could do if they brought out a 25x70 Astro Porro Prism Binocular 😀
I have the Vortex Kaibab 20x56 HD and they are stellar for astronomy! They are quite hefty and I use them in concert with my Vortex Razor HD 12x50s.
@@Bestbinocularsreviews I have a pair of Vortex Kaibab 15x56, I find this to be very useful for astronomy, using a tripod is best
They just need to fuze two razor HD spotting scopes together as well as the focusing mechanism and boom, zoom binoculars for astronomy.
Those are some expensive binoculars...

With binoculars, it is a case of diminishing returns, but there is no doubt they are better than cheap instruments in many ways. Im curious about the new UHD binos, but he lost me when he said the Vortex Razor HD binoculars are the best he has every used and a benchmark to judge all other binos....and then they won his "BBR binocular of the year" award. Pretty obvious hes either never used true alpha glass from Leica and Swarovski or something is really wrong with his eyes...
Hi, thanks for the comment. I have used, tested and reviewed many/most alpha level binoculars and there is no doubting their quality, which you can read about in my reviews on the BBR website. So, sorry for not being clear, but what I was trying to say is that to me the Vortex Razor HD binoculars easily rank up there with them. They won the BBR Award because they were the best binoculars that I tested for that year. They are now my benchmark binocular that I use to compare others against because I still have them with me this is because I purchased them - most of the samples I get for reviewing go back to the manufacturers as I can't afford to buy them all and thus they can't be my benchmark instrument. BTW some binoculars I review perform better than some of my benchmarks. They are just a point of reference that helps me to be more consistent when making an opinion. Hope this makes sense!

Hi thanks for the comment and your opinion - just to confirm that I can promise you that I am in no way ever compensated by any manufacturer or supplier - these are just my own personal opinions. I also like to ask why would any 'alpha German glass' automatically be better than the best that the rest of the world can make? Surely one day someone will also be able to achieve the same level or even better? Or perhaps it has already happened?
Best Binocular Reviews because I have seen them all. I own Swarovski, Schmidt and bender, Meopta. I live near Eurooptic in Pennsylvania. I get to compare all high end optics before I buy them. Vortex is ok for the price but Meopta beats vortex hands down. These binoculars are so expensive and same price range as Swarovski slc. This is again a bullshit paid review. No one in the world will buy vortex over Swarovski if the price was so close.
My suggestion to everyone but Swarovski or Zeiss if you can. If not then Meopta is way cheaper and still provides 95% of Swarovski quality. Look though Meopta B1 binos. I use el 8.5x42 and had Zeiss victory ht before that. I compared all binoculars from leica to bushnell to Nikon to vortex. Trust me
