Time for the Mullvad VPN review, it’s one of the “people’s favorites” after all. From the account creation that requires no personal data to high standards of security - it is a paragon of VPN quality. But Mullvad is not only about good security. In this Mullvad review, I will get to the bottom of the upsides and the downsides it has.
=== Security ===
To start with, is Mullvad good for security? I’ve heard that Mullvad is considered to be one of the safest VPNs, and in my experience, it’s not just simple rumors. The Mullvad VPN account creation process has to be the most unique of all I have encountered so far. You don’t need to provide an email address, instead you are getting a personalized “account number” that you use to log in. The payment can also be completely private, not just with Cryptocurrencies, but with cash or specialized Mullvad vouchers you can buy in certain shops.
A lot of effort was put into making Mullvad private, that’s for sure. One downside is that it's in the Sweden jurisdiction - this country is part of the 14-eyes intelligence alliance after all. However, with a no-logs policy in place and a Mullvad privacy audit, I believe it can deal with this minor issue.
Even the baseline security is reliable: there’s a choice between the AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryptions, with both being viable options. Plus, the kill switch is enabled by default to avoid IP and DNS leaks.
While Mullvad doesn’t have that many additional features, it can offer Shadowsocks protocol against internet restrictions and Split tunneling for flexibility. Plus, there are options to block ads, malware and even gambling and adult content.
=== Performance ===
But that alone is not enough to judge Mullvad, so I’m continuing with this review of Mullvad VPN. Next in line is Performance. Once again, there are a lot of things here that Mullvad does a bit unconventionally.
For instance, its servers are separated by the tunneling protocol they use. About 340 servers use OpenVPN, over 380 have Mullvad WireGuard support and about 30 servers work on the Bridge protocol. With a total of about 899 servers in 39 counties, Mullvad falls off in comparison to most top providers.
On the other hand, Mullvad takes pride in the fact it owns a portion of their server grid. And I only have to agree - this is a praiseworthy investment, that takes away a lot of outside influence on their infrastructure.
Performance-wise, I’d say the Mullvad speed test showed me a stable connection and a decent speed level. The worst I have seen is about 40% speed loss, but with my baseline of 300 Mbps, that’s honestly not that bad.
=== Streaming & Torrenting ===
I would’ve loved to take this speed for a spin on my favorite streaming website, but alas, I can’t. Yeah, it’s a sad moment for this Mullvad VPN review 2022 - Mullvad doesn’t work with streaming content. Neither Mullvad Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer nor any other combos worked for me, no matter how many servers I’ve tried.
But it’s too early to get all pessimistic. With a great negative comes a great positive - this Mullvad review reaches torrenting and Mullvad is awesome at it.. I’ve not experienced any P2P restrictions with Mullvad and that’s only the beginning. Security aside, there’s Mullvad port forwarding and SOCKS5 proxy to increase your torrenting performance.

@@voryia Most ISPs use dynamic IP addresses so a particular IP address could be used by any of its clients. The only real way to know who it is if mullvad logs the date and time an IP address connects and disconnects. Then you can compare it to the ISP's records. But mullvad has a no log policy so this method won't work either.
I'll be honest, you excessively promote promotional links to the top VPN providers which kills a lot of your credibility. There is no money to be made with most of the smaller VPNs compared to the big bag you earn from promoting the big ones.

"Mullvad is pricy" you say, yet it's only 5 euros a month VS other VPN providers, which advertise being as low as "$2 a month" but they only bill full price annually with no monthly plans.
Yes, if you want to pay monthly for other VPN providers, it can cost $10+ per month.

Yes, it really is as good as they say. Privacy is #1 when it comes to Mullvad. It's also the cheapest VPN around by A LOT.

Stopped watching after you talked about testing the speed on a 300 MBit/s connection, while they have several 10+ Gbit/s servers and I can get 800 MBit/s+ speeds on my 1 GBit connection. Don't criticize food if you have a burnt tongue.

Mulvad is my first Ever vpn. I like the pay as you go model instead of monthly or yearly sub.
This is what I like as well. Long term it might be a bit pricey, but if you just need a vpn for a month or two, it's actually dirt cheap. Unlimited bandwidth and 5 devices.
Mine 2, liked the account number, pay, download app, enter account number and done. Needed it for 4 months, used a few days to check others before i found mullvad and then the choice was easy! Super easy

@@jonnydazzels1565 Nope. No VPN can work for hiding yourself form google when you are using their services like youtube and all. It's all google and google will know who you are when you create an account with phone numbers (Which seems necessary). If google know this account belongs to your then NO VPN can save your from them.
I have released a video talking about VPNs for UA-cam! But in short, you definitely can circumvent specific geo-restrictions on UA-cam with a VPN - for example if you get an error that the video is not available in your country.

As of May 29th 2023 Mullvad no longer allows port forwarding which makes the service useless for me and a majority of their user base. No more Plex servers, no more crypto nodes, no more bypassing CGNAT with them, and no more private torrents with them.
It's not useless for torrenting, just worse. You're not gonna lose that much speed from not having a port open.
