    George was a farmer, so of course he was planting the Queen's garden! LOL! Also, the song they were dancing to at the end was SZA 'Nobody Gets Me." Even though it would have been messy, Lady Danbury as Violet's stepmother would have been better than her bio mother, she was horrible! Such a reaction and cannot wait for Season 3 of Bridgerton; I think you will love it!

    As we know from the "modern-day" scenes, the country is in the hands of George and Charlotte's son, George, who is regent because his father isn't capable to rule. That is why we have the Regency era.

    • @chechantal
      @chechantal Місяць тому +38

      @@towanalucas2080 that is accurate. Princess Charlotte of Wales died in childbirth. Then, the second legitimate granddaughter was born to their son Edward and his wife. They got married in the 6th episode and told Queen Charlotte they were pregnant. She hugged him.
      Historically, that granddaughter was Queen Victoria. The real Charlotte died before Victoria was born and never met the heir.

  • @agenttheater5
    @agenttheater5 Місяць тому +36

    15:35 See the story in real life is that Charlotte was rumoured to have "Moor ancestry" perhaps 10 or 15 generations ago. Some have wondered, based on the differences in her appearance in the various paintings of her, if she herself was dark skinned and that some painters made her skin look lighter to hide it. Can't be proven I don't think.
    This is an alternative history where she was definitely dark-skinned.

    39:27 We're all hoping we'll see Reynolds later on. I think someone has confirmed he hasn't died which is what everyone thought. But he is the Kings man - he has to attend to the king as long as he either lives or as long as he is able to. And George is kept away from everyone else he has to stay with him all the time so he and Brimsley hardly ever get to see each other anymore.

    • @deancontiwriter13
      @deancontiwriter13 Місяць тому +2

      which is probably the saddest reality in my opinion. like, when you think of the situation for queer people at the time, most likely when one realized they were they thought they were going to end up alone or in an unhappy marriage. But Brimsley and Reynolds most probably thought they had been lucky. They got to have a relationship that was, while yet secret which came with its own set of issues, secure, happy and full of love. They would've thought they were so fortunate to have found each other and to have found each other under such circumstances.
      Then, the King went fully mad. And all their fears from before they met became true anyway, both of them were alone once again.

    2:01 About 100 years ago they recommended surgery for women with what they then called 'hysteria' - meaning surgically removing her womb to improve her mental state, justifying it as identifying it as the source of her troubles.
    Meaning 100 years ago from today.

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 Місяць тому +6

      @@MoviesinDepth Freud once did surgery on a woman's nose (this was early on in his career, and of course the nose is another phallic symbol), did such a bad job it had to be removed (oddly enough from what I've heard the woman in question (an early woman's rights activist) still identified herself as a Freudian (hats of to her for not taking destruction of her nose personally I guess).
      A doctor in the 1920s and 30s called Doctor Cotton allowed the surgeons in his clinic to perform experimental surgery and allowed the dentists to remove women's teeth as well, the idea was to find the source of the madness and remove it (her teeth or something else). I think his justification was that when you get sick something of the illness stays in you, it was either that he saw mental illness as a physical illness or he theorised that if you were ill when you were younger it stayed with you and manifested into insanity, I'm not sure though. He got so many people under his care because of support from people who shared his beliefs and who exaggerated his levels of success.

    14:38 Women can't inherit the entire estate. It always has to go to the nearest living male relative. Which is why it's important for women to have sons because they they have some security then when their husbands die - it's less likely that a man will throw his mother and sisters out of the house. If a cousin or a second cousin inherited the house he would be in his rights to throw the widow and her daughters out of the house and they'd have to find some other place to live (which is where having other male relatives may help).
    I'm not sure how Lady Catherine got her house in Pride and Prejudice though, but earlier int he book Mr Bennett commented that when he died his cousin whom he's never seen before Mr COllins may through Mrs Bennett and their five daughters out of their house, and in Sense and Sensibility a man died and his son from his first marriage inherited the house and moved in with his family which meant the dead mans family from his second marriage had to find another place to live.

    39:33 That's Queen Victoria they're talking about.
    Their eldest son George became George the 4th (he'd declared bankruptcy twice as his time as Prince Regent and only married his wife Caroline of Brunswick because Parliament agreed to pay off his debts if he did, they hated each other), his one legitimate child died (the young woman whose funeral this show began with) before him. The second song Frederick died before Georg the Fourth did (the one who said he hadn't seen his wife for 20 years), so William (the one Charlotte gave the talk to about love being a choice) became King after him. In real life he was nearly twice his wife's age and he had several illegitimate children by then, but by all accounts theirs was an affectionate marriage and she actually got on pretty well with his illegitimate children. They had no children of their own, just a few miscarriages but they still made it work. Some reckon that that's why they wanted their niece Victoria to attend their court more often (as the daughter of the fourth son Edward, Victoria was next in line, and apparently the heir apparent is retired to attend the current monarch at their court, but her mother and her mother's advisor kept her under really close reigns after her father's death).

    yeah therapists and "doctors of the mind" didn't really exist at this point. George, later on in life, did in fact end up working with one of the very first. I HIGHLY recommend the Lucy Worsley documentary "Lucy Worsley Investigates". She has an episode on George and his mental illness that is the most up to date and modern understanding of his condition. I cannot recommend it enough. I would also watch her series The First Georgians: The German Kings Who Made Britain. In particular the last two episodes out of the three part series start to discuss the previous king who was this George's grandfather. He and George's father HATED each other and he died relatively young, leave Augusta (George's mother) in a horrific position that kind explains why she's portrayed as an utter tyrant in this. Hurray for context!!!

  • @agenttheater5

    5:59 Yep - and since we don't know what exactly was wrong with him it means we can interpret his madness any way we want if it's for a plot device - i.e. high pitched giggling and obsessive possessive love of a colony in Hamilton, completely delusional in Blackadder season 3 (newspaper item "King talks to tree, phew, what a loony!"), porphyria in the 1990's play and movie 'The madness of King George' (which was the theory at the time though some have questioned that diagnosis later on).
    Most recently the theories of what exactly was wrong with him have included acute mania, bipolar disorder and possibly in later life dementia (they're thinking maybe one of the others earlier on and then dementia settled in later in life - some say that bipolar disorder can give rise to dementia).
    There are other stories as well - in Jean Rhys (60s historical novel writer) she had him suddenly yelling when he got worked up about things, in the BBC seriesVictoria one of his younger sons said that George kept seeing a red dog everywhere (might have just been a rumour), heard a rumour that later in life he kept talking to a pillow, maybe holding it as well, as if it were one of his sons who had died (his and Charlotte's 13th and 14th child both died before they were five, both boys, both in the same year - Charlotte was pregnant with her 15th at the time, the daughter she gave birth too died in her late 20s, the Amelia she mentioned in her scene with George in season 1).
    As I said, we're not sure.
