My Mother was born in Rhyolite in 1911. Her Father was a mining engineer. My Grandmother told me the nice ladies would go to the train station upstairs and play cards once a week. They moved to Goldfield when she was 2. They lived there long enough for her to finish the 11th grade. Then they moved to Oregon. My Grandfather is buried in the Goldfield Cemetery.

But...with that being said, we truly love the long and glorious history and architecture in the UK. Stunning, memorable, awe-inspiring, and beautiful. Those folks knew how to build to last! 🇬🇧

When I first went to Rhyolite in 1986, there was another ghost town which you alluded to, Bullfrog. All that was left were ruins of buildings and rusted-out hulks of cars from the 1920's. Alas, my pix of Bullfrog were among the family photos trashed by my ex-wife when she left me. Bullfrog disappeared into an open-pit mine years later. I'm surprised you didn't go to Carrara, which is just south of Beatty on 95.
We usually have a rough plan of what we want to do during our outings, and Rhyolite and Beatty were on the schedule for that day. I am so sorry you lost your memorabilia - we have ALL lost something irreplaceable as life moves along (photos, record albums, mementos), and we sure lament its loss, don't we? Great video! :) And nice to learn more of the history of this town :) I visited Rhyolite myself, back in 2012, on my way from Las Vegas back to LA. *I'm from Norway, and this was my first trip to USA, so I desided to take a "small" detour thru Death Valley :P Sooo many amazing places along the way tho!
This is a great question. There is precious little wood in the desert (basically none) suitable for building. So, they brought in precious wood from elsewhere to build these boomtowns; and then they salvaged that wood when they left. So all you see remaining are the stone portions.

Two events happened, one after another: In 1906 the San Francisco earthquake turned the financial situation in the West into chaos; then in 1907 there was a nationwide financial crisis. As a result, investment in the Rhyolite mines dried up, and they couldn’t continue operating. That’s a huge simplification, but basically that’s what happened. Thanks for asking!

I love these old mining/ghost towns in the West. I’ve been to Bode in CA, Tombstone AZ and a few others. Would love to see this one.

The Cook Bank was used and seen in Michael Bay's film 'The Island', it's where Ewen McGregor and Scarlett Johansson took shelter briefly in the film.
