Nigel - we had Andy Hamilton as a guest and he THOUGHT they might have slowed down Rio when he recorded it, although it was so long ago he wasn’t 100%. That would mean that the rapid 1/16ths tongued notes would have been easier to single tongue. Indeed, I’ve never seen him, Simon Willescroft or anyone else single tongue that bit at full battle speed like the original in a live situation. To me it feels impossible. Hence, your phrasing amendment! 😊
@@McGillMusicSaxSchool That would be good. I had no idea that Michael Brecker played the solo on Your latest trick. I love it when you find out that jazz greats have played on pop songs. Stan Getz played with Huey Lewis and the news, Brenford Marsallis plays with Sting, Chet Baker played with Elvis Costello on Shipbuilding. I love it. That would make a great video
I was hoping you might include Will you by Hazel O’Connor. There’s a solo in there that I’ve tried to get transcribed (even asked the guy who played it!) but so far have been unsuccessful. The sax player was Wesley Magoogan. Thanks for these tracks, they’re what made me want to take up the sax.
I was at primary school during the 80s so this passed me by, but its great to hear those incredible solos, love the Tina Turner Simply the best one, hope to try and recreate it with this video. Hmmm not as good though :-)
Not from the 80's, not the 70's, but late 60's (69 to be precise): the solo at the end of Touch Me, by The Doors, is my all time favourite. I guess because The Soft Parade was my third LP. My granny and aunt hated it more than the first one (mr. Wonderful, Fleetwood Mac) 🙃 BTW I already thought the end solo on Smooth Operator started slightly different than in the SaxSchool version.
Sorry, only for tenor at the moment. But I’d suggest grabbing them because it’s good to learn these solos in the original keys where they lay on the original instrument - lots to learn here.
I bought a Alto 25 years ago, My Late wife of 30 years wouldn't let me practice, She has been gone since 2016, My father got dementia and I've been his in home nurse for 10 years and yes you guessed it, he said stop that (*&(!( noise! Well he passed in July now I'm alone. Please direct me to starter videos. I might add that I play Harmonica, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar and Piano, They loved hearing me play them but hated me tuning up on the Sax. I'm not a noobie to music. This is my first real go since no one can tell me to stop/shut up. You know the one I want to play is Bakers Street! I can on guitar but it's not the same.
I also know mussel memory is going to be hard at my age but I really want to learn. I just reminded myself of learning the other instruments while watching I had to learn things like Camp town races, and Old Susana to enforce repetitiveness so my hands know before my brain does.
Hi. Sorry to hear about your Father but glad you’re getting back to sax. Here’s a free resource that will get you going fast: www.saxschool.online/the-ultimate-saxophone-tool-kit-2-0
Play the synth intro into the sax part . One verse and the repeat. Raphael Ravenscroft got £27/$35 for it in 1976!! Earned a lot from it but was a troubled guy. Died busking on the streets of Exeter.
Sorry, only for tenor at the moment (the original keys), but that’s also a great place to start learning them. You can get your copy free here: www.saxschool.online/1980
Nigel, I can't believe you did this whole segment without any Huey Lewis and the News. How about "I want a new drug" ua-cam.com/video/WYqJnO-yD6Y/v-deo.html
I did a home recording of “Latest Trick” 3 years ago. I didn’t know I was missing the 5th note. This was in the original key C# minor. ua-cam.com/video/bX20d46erVM/v-deo.htmlsi=qRE9ta8ZK0D61qfL
A favorite 80’s sax solo of mine is Scott Page’s on The Dogs of War as heard at the 4:45 mark here: ua-cam.com/video/5W7klssQ38Q/v-deo.htmlsi=Ee0wp3dQUNw6-M8n
Don't forget the grab the free transcription PDF www.saxschool.online/1980
Dude, you're speaking to my generation. Love these classic 80s sax solos!!
Tim Capello is making love to that saxophone!
Ha!!!

Oh that’s interesting Jamie. Simon Willescroft did a couple things for us but I never asked that question.
Sweetwater sells Tim Capello saxophone codpieces. Soprano, alto, tenor, and bari naturally.
Hahahaha! Can you imagine that!
Thank you, Nigel! You always bring me great motivation 🎷
Awesome to hear. Thanks for watching! 👍🎷
Enjoyed this Nigel Great content!!!
Thanks for watching Paul. Glad you enjoyed it.
To me, the greatest sax solo of the 80s has to be on Hazel O'Conner's Will You? Played by the great Wes Magoogan
That is a brilliant one - but it’s an alto solo. I’ll have to do another list of classic 80s alto solos like that. What do you think?

You’ll get there Zabelle!
@@McGillMusicSaxSchoolthanks Nigel, I'll keep watching sax school lessons 🎷🎷
I would recommend learning Five Long Years by Colin James and performed by Johnny Ferreira.
Johnny sounds great on that track! Great suggestion. 👍🎷

That’s another great one! Glad you spotted that difference in the ending too.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention urgent with foreigner.
That's one hell of a solo.
That is a great solo and one we have lessons on inside Sax School actually. Thanks for the suggestion. 👍🎷
Junior Walker's solo on Foreigner's Urgent?!
That’s another classic for sure!
Very surprised you didn't include Gary Herbig's solo from Rod Stewart's "Some Guys Have All The Luck".
Oh great suggestion!!!
Can we get these for alto sax please?
Sorry, only for tenor at the moment. But I’d suggest grabbing them because it’s good to learn these solos in the original keys where they lay on the original instrument - lots to learn here.

Your Sound is so good ! What Mouthpiece you use in this Video? Reed ??
Thanks. I’m playing a Jody Jazz HR* 8 and Legere Signature 2.5 reed. 👍🎷
Why no 'Cowboys and Angels' the sax in that is amazing.
Oh, great suggestion!
Do you have these transcribed for alto sax, please?

Are there smaller tenor sax because that Charlie sax look smaller than yours?
Hi. All tenor saxes are the same size. Perhaps Charlie is just a bigger guy than me?
Glenn Frey - You belong to the city.... ?
Another classic for part 2! Thanks for watching 👍🎷
What?!? No Careless Whisper?!?!
That’s definitely one for “part 2”! Thanks for watching.
