Man. I just want to thank you for all your Video's. I'm Butt deep in a 02 tj engine swap, an I found you. Holy cow, thank you for all your Video's Bruhda. Your a life savor !!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this video, exactly what I needed to see! I had an exhaust leak from my manifold on my TJ as well, so this was good help, thanks!
I’m having a new exhaust manifold done on my 5 speed, ‘97 Jeep Wrangler TJ. Now I know what’s involved! Wish I had a friend to do mine. Midas is doing the work. Hope all goes well. I know people have their doubts when it comes to Midas, but I had to trust someone to do it! My fingers are crossed!!🤞 2/13/19
I always enjoy you videos. It challenges me to try things I wouldn't typically do, plus your in the Nashville area where my daughter is living and it makes me think of her every time I watch. Thanks for sharing you crazy life and fun projects!!
Last summer I was going to replace the intake gasket...and i can attest...those bottom bolts are a couple mofo's to get at. I have a pit to work in...so it was easy for me to get under it...then I dropped the breaker bar on my mouth and called it day because it was time for a trip to the dentist. You won that round Jeep.
Love the vids Man. I have a 97 TJ thankfully not all rusted out like yours haha but im diggin the parts your putting in and all the time and effort your spending to restore these awesome vehicles. Cant wait to see more progress on your TJ im sure these vids will be helpful for me later down the road.
But how did you get the doughnut gasket on? I didn’t see it in the video. That’s where I’m stuck. It’s like the gasket is too small. Can’t drive it on with a mallet because it just crushes it.
Bullshitkorner Thanks bro - it would be 100 times harder if it had a supercharger on it - hahaha ... the worst was the 4 bolts under the intake - super PITA to get to and really hard to see.
Hey Dave, I know you said it was the hardest part, but any suggestions on getting those bottom bolts off the intake header? I'm trying to replace my exhaust gasket, but I can't even find those bottom bolts!
Yet another video that doesn't show the worst part. The HELLISH bottom bolts. My second from the front in my 2001 has fought me for 4 days and I STILL cant get it out.
Awesome thanks! I got the manifold off last night, and the gasket literally crumbled in my hands. hoping that was the source of my ticking! the down pipe was ever so slightly loose on one side but when the motor was running i didnt really hear anything from it. heres hoping its just the gasket! on an unrelated note this is the first time I have attempted to do anything like this so Im glad I didnt break anything! HA
Holy cow the jeep sounds so much better... sounds like brand new and runs like a watch. I may be replacing my rear main soon, but I am trying to figure out the procedure. is there any differece between the 2.5 or the 4.0? I have he 2.5...
I'm thinking of this time when I replace my Exhaust manifold of Brazing all the points I suspect it would crack Two times it has happened to me and the reason was the same exact reason ; I hit a water Puddle , The same water puddle in the road Same puddle on two different jeeps. Hot manifold small water puddle do not get along well together . I can braze pretty good bead just a little at a time so that I do not get distortion I hope. ?
I got a leak but not to confident in replacing it myself. I already have a new manifold waiting to be put on. Any idea how much it would cost me for a mechanic to put it in?
Hey Dave! Can you give the specifics of the part number for the replacement manifold and where you got it from? I clicked on the "products link" at the end of the video but there wasn't any parts listed.
I really dread doing my Exhaust Manifold and you did not make it look easy. SUGGESTION when you work on son that is really rough at every rough point rub greasy dirt on your arm , shirt, face, and the worse it is at every point more dirt and when you are done we want to see you head to toe filthy . Also can you say about what it would cost each job ? also since you are drinking a Beer let the kind be seen really well and perhaps mention what A treat anyone would do this job if he gets one of these when the job was done and he would do it standing on his head if he got two of them . That way you just might get paid for your commercial sooner or later. Thanks. So after that tip I just gave you will you come do my Exhaust manifold for me ? I'll Give you two cases of beer and pay a reasonable price . Thanks. Make sure to always complain and mention the hardest part as you go along. Thanks.

Thanks so much Brandon keep turning wrenches hahaha

While all is apart, would be a great time to clean TB and all associated sensors, I did and greatly improved idle and response.

Good luck 😁

Thanks Jeff ! Sure is hot here I'm sure your daughter can attest to that lol
Great video, I'm currently working on my 97 TJ manifold and this video gave some clarity, that I am doing it the correct way lol.
You are awesome. I wished you lived closer to me so I could get your help on my TJ
good video, but a couple suggestions: 1- disconnect fuel line before removing the intake 2-need more beer brakes in between :)

+Joey Cameron Dang Joey - sounds like a typical day for a Jeep mechanic - :) Nice to have a pit but I'm sorry about the teeth :)
Were your bolts all rusty? Worried about breaking one of mine off and ending up with a bolt stuck in the head
Sm,art move installing the lower intake bolts on the head and sliding the manifold into place.
Hey Dave great video learned a lot from your videos ben watching about 2 years now thanks
Thanks so much Joe I appreciate you watchin !!!!
Nice of you to fix that up for her. Doesn't look like the most fun job!
UndergroundTrev It wasnt too bad except for the humidity

Thanks Frank ! The TJs are the last "real" Jeeps :)
Great job! How long do you think it took you?
Can it be taken off from underneath or do you still have to take that top piece off.
But how did you get the doughnut gasket on? I didn’t see it in the video. That’s where I’m stuck. It’s like the gasket is too small. Can’t drive it on with a mallet because it just crushes it.
Going to be doing this to my 97 soon. Not sure if i'll be filming. Seems like a lot of time to do haha. Wish me luck
as a fellow jeep lover, especially tj' s.. I'm definitely subbing. keep jeepin
Dave , AWESOME VIDEO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!!!!! this video really helped me but I went ahead and took the fender off lol to get those bottom bolts
great job Dave, i've would dread to do that job with the engine in the jeep looks like a lot of screwing around
Bullshitkorner Thanks bro - it would be 100 times harder if it had a supercharger on it - hahaha ... the worst was the 4 bolts under the intake - super PITA to get to and really hard to see.
removing the supercharger to change the header would be no easy feat, i'd just weld it up and hope for the best lol
Bullshitkorner yeah I was thinking that would be a fun one ;)
Yea well i got to do the same thing on a tj i just picked up .And you got that right when you said pain in the ass.
Hey Dave, I know you said it was the hardest part, but any suggestions on getting those bottom bolts off the intake header? I'm trying to replace my exhaust gasket, but I can't even find those bottom bolts!
I had to crawl underneath to see them - once you have an idea where they are you can reach around and feel them but you are right they are a pain.
I know this is an older video, but have you ever had to deal with the air intake manifold remaining stuck after unbolting?
Nice job Dave gotta me some of those tools and beer
The Milwaukee cordless have replaced my air tools for the most part. They are nice for sure
was the replacement header a direct fit to the catalytic converter?
Yet another video that doesn't show the worst part. The HELLISH bottom bolts. My second from the front in my 2001 has fought me for 4 days and I STILL cant get it out.
I can hear the humidity!
How much does this cost because I have a Jeep exactly the same with this problem as well
How much was the manifold ?
Jose Maan my jeep has the split manifold set up and it was about $400 for both.
I am interested to know what the Carpenter Hammer was used for. Is part of the Jeep engine made out of wood?
I aint that partickular on hammers hahahahaha
Howdy again my friend! Popular opinion up here is an exhaust manifold leak on my 2.5l. Do you have any videos doing work on the 2.5? Thanks!
Hey Walt !! The 2.5 is basically the same procedure as the 4.0 must with a few less bolts holding the manifold on.
HA
Sounds like you did awesome ! Make sure to look closely at the manifold - thay can develop small cracks also.
Holy cow the jeep sounds so much better... sounds like brand new and runs like a watch. I may be replacing my rear main soon, but I am trying to figure out the procedure. is there any differece between the 2.5 or the 4.0? I have he 2.5...
your rear mail seal is leaking ? The 2.5 and 4.0 are different seals but the procedure is pretty much the same.
How many bolts were underneath
Dave I have a 97 tj with a 2.5 ltr how long of a process is it start to finish an do you recommend a stainless steel header over the cast iron?
John Shuppas did my 2.5 exhaust manifold myself, same year. First time tackling that type of job, took 4-5 hours taking my time and being careful.
Subscribed! Very informative. What year Jeep was this? Because the earlier model TJs are different than the later models!
+Dalton H Thanks Dalton - It is a 98 - the later models used a two piece exhaust manifold that didn't crack as easily.
I'm thinking of this time when I replace my Exhaust manifold of Brazing all the points I suspect it would crack Two times it has happened to me and the reason was the same exact reason ;

Nicolas Smith napa in my city says 225
Hey Dave! Can you give the specifics of the part number for the replacement manifold and where you got it from? I clicked on the "products link" at the end of the video but there wasn't any parts listed.
Sure - up to 1999 for the 4.0 it was this one - amzn.to/2im8iAO
2000-2006 was a two piece design - amzn.to/2hoNmuj
Do you know why the single piece header won’t work on 2000-2006?
If I ever do this again, I will take the left fender off. Man, I cussed and cussed........
How long did the job take you? I've got to do the same thing but have little time and dont trust mechanics lol.
about 4 hours
4 hours? Geez, just for the exhaust manifold.
2 hours of sweating and 2 hours of R&R
Hell yeah! Thank you!..that earned a Subscribe!!
Manifold is on, but when I’m waiting at a light, the engine is reved up!
Lube the throttle cables. If that doesn’t do it, check throttle position sensor (25$)
Who else here wears a white shirt when wrenching on their Jeep? Lol...
Only an idiot hahahahaha
Thanks!
Dumb question........Do you charge extra when the shirt has to come off??? HAhaha!! great video!
Why tf you take out half the engine to replace a manifold
omg ,,,,,,,,,, why the fuck wouldn't you remove that intake to make job neater and easier
Lol wow u are soaked in sweat
ian thusrston no doubt it was so humid - it was terrible but sometimes you have to geterdone lol

Granville Lovell I'll take those suggestions under consideration :).
